Just had my breaks checked out by quick fit and they have quoted me about £500 to replace my disks and pads :sick: can anyone tell me how hard they are to fit and what sort of price they will cost on the internet for the disks and pads i drive a 1.4 mk4 golf

but before anything get the brakes checked out by a well trusted mechanic or a friend of yours who knows about cars, as i dont fully trust quick sh1t!!

quick sh1ts sounds about right took it to a garage friend of a friend met me there after hours put it on the ramp front 2 pads he said looked brand new disks totally fine the back disks was under the 8mm limit which he did prove it so thinking oh no I am going to have to folk out a load to cash he quoted me £45 for rear disks, pads and labour what a mate :o funny thing about these so called break inspection they dont take the wheel of as the mechanic had to use a mallet the wheel hasnt been removed in that much time :undecided:

I've tried to unravel the structure on that sentence and by rear discs, do you mean the back ones at the back wheels? 1.4s never had rear discs. :undecided:
£45 is a great price! You also don't really need to remove wheels to see how bad pads and discs are.

True, you can see if they are really knackered usually.
But you can't really make a true judgement without taking the wheel off.

That's what I was thinking AudiA8, but I thought if they're knackered then the mechanic isn't gonna take the wheels off is he?

They took it of to make a fair judgement as to what kwick fit said. The rear disc was only 1mm under the 8mm requirement and having it lifted was also helpful as its a new car to me so had a mate have a quick look under it

Well for £45 I wouldn't hang around, he's not making much if anything off of that. Although one question, do the MK4's need rear bearings like the Cabrios and MK3s?
Oh and get him a Kit-Kat to go with the breaks. :grin: :wink:

dont think so just the discs and pads. He's a mate of a mate after hours out of the book probably :wink: get paid friday so wont be long :)

Mk4's don't have bearings housed in the hub of discs like earlier models.
500 quid is silly money for a 1.4. I reckon 300 quid for the whole lot including labour.
45 quid is cheap for getting the rears done, go with that.
It proves that its always worth getting a second opinion, and never trust kwik fit :rolleyes:

While I was there they did notice I need new locking nuts preferably by early next week when my breaks are fitted where can i get a cheap set?
