Title: perfect size ?lowering springs ?
Post by: bzqtang on 26 April 2010, 20:26
Hi all,

I'm considering to lower my car with springs and i am tempted to go with Eibach. but what's stopping me to buy the springs now is i want to know what is the perfect lowering for both rear and front without hitting those nasty street bums?
The place where i live got quite many those. I'm missing my country

you mean keep it factory ? yeah but actually i m going to put 18'' wheels on it and thought it might look better if lowered on springs than those factories.

lowering it on coilovers or springs doesnt mix with deep potholes. Its a nightmare  if the roads are bumpy with light holes ect, the ride isnt too bad. Its up too you, just remember if you go lower your ride will suffer !

The gti does need lowering though it looks far too high standard !

about 20mm is fine for me, although it does look better at 30ish

right thanks mate . actually i m referring to the street bumps on the road. just want to know how low do i have to lower my car without scratching my car's bumper while passing them lol.
I'm actually looking for Eibach springs for my Golf MK5 GTI (2005).

If someone can post me a link where they sell them i would appreciate it.

im fine at 20-25mm so it should be ok for you too, just depends on how slow you take the bumps or how big the bumps are.

Measure the bumps with a ruler then measure your bumper height then take away the amount you are lowering the car and this will tell you if you are likely to encounter any problems.

thanks for the idea but i doubt i will go on the street and measure them . What brand is yours as i can't find 20-25mm with H&R

Ive mine lowerd on eibach pro springs! transformed the handling, and looks great on 18"s! the car now sits 40mm lower.

Theres loads of speed bumps around here, and ive had no probs rubbing etc, just take them at sensible speeds

Yeah , i know hate those street bumps . I hope once my gti is lowered to 30mm i won't have any problems with those speed bumps. It's already breaking my heart everytime i roll over a pot hole

Anyone got any picture of a 20mm and a 30mm lowered golf mk5 gti (sideways) ? If yes please post them here so I can see the differences. Would help me make a decision.

i have H&R springs on mine and no problems at all with speed bumps, the handling is improved and to me the ride feels no harsher, im considering coilovers for better handling but accept the ride will be harsher.

I woulda thought that 30-35mm would be fine...I had my mk2 sat 40mm and my mk3 and both were fine with that...the mk5 does fill the arches better than both of those as standard so if it's not for handling improvements and purely looks, coilovers would help you get the stance you want.

If the speed bumps are not the full width of the road, appraoch slowly and ease up just one side of the car that way themiddle won't be in contact

You missed the point of the post...I'm saying my previous cars were good un low. Mk5 sits lower as standard anyway but in none of my cars have I had an issue. That's why I was saying go te coilovers route if it is looks rather than comfort compromise that you are after
