Title: headache with mk4 sound system upgrading :(
Post by: wakeboarder15 on 26 April 2010, 19:00
hi guys!

got a bit of a headache with my mk4 golf

i am in the process of doing my sound system
...bought my front speakers already (some jbl ones...sound good)
also went and bought a sub-woofer and amp today!

now car already had wiring from previous owner for a sub and amp and i stupidly assumed that it was connected to the headunit already and all i would need to do is plug the amp and sub in!

....but no its not connected and upon removing the headunit i went on to find that my headunit doesnt have the ports to connect the leads i have!!!
the leads i have installed are:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_180297_langId_-1_categoryId_165626

my amp and sub is connected to the blue lead which then goes on to the headunit

now my headunit is this one:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_720841_langId_-1_categoryId_165474

so basically do i need a new headunit in order to be able to run my amp and sub?
and if so then some reccomendations would be good (something around the 100 mark would be good)

or is there an adapter i can buy which will allow me to plug my leads into the back of my headunit?

would really appreciate a quick response as need to get adapter or headunit tomorrow (preferably just an adapter but needs must)

thanks a lot

Do you see any of these when u look behind ur current headunit?
If not, then u need a new one which has inputs for subwoofer or amp.

but no dont have any of those inputs, so yeah new head unit needed :undecided:

any suggestions?
...i thought this one looked ok:

hi again
been trying to get my amp to power up but it just isnt having it!

i have checked the voltage and it was all as it should be
my earth was crap so i made another one into the bottom on the boot...which i was told should be more than ok!

but still my amp wont power up!

its currently not connected to a headunit (new one arriving today)
however i didnt think it would make a difference!

so can anyone think why my amp wont power up?

and yes its all been connected properly...and checked by someone else to confirm that!

thanks a lot

i have checked the voltage and it was all as it should be

What have you checked, exactly?
If you're holding a multimeter across the positive and negative channels and you're seeing a voltage, then the amp has power.

However, if the amplifier isn't connected to a headunit, how are you expecting it to power up? It needs a remote signal from the headunit to say "turn on".

yes i held a multimeter over the positive and negative
i was going by the little light turning on when it powers up?
...which it doesnt (turn on)

and i was told that the amp should power up without being connected to a headunit (incorrect information i guess then?)

thanks for the help

Yes mate, that is wholly incorrect.

The amp will only turn on when told to do so by the headunit, otherwise it would be on the whole time and flatten your battery.
What you have connected at that moment is the necessary earth and permanent 12v supply.

You also need to have connected a 'remote' wire, which is a low voltage trigger signal, sent by the head unit to say "turn on" or "turn off", essentially. If you look at the amplifier there are three cable terminals; 12v perm, earth and remote.

Without a remote signal your amp will not run.

Yup.

As well as the thick red power cable running from the amp to the battery there should also be a remote cable - do you have that installed? This is a much narrower gauge of wire than your main power cable, its carrying next to no power or current.

That should, along with the RCA cables, journey up behind your dash and be sat behind your headunit waiting to be connected.

When your new headunit arrives plug in your RCA's connect the remote wire from your amp to the appropriate wire on the head unit loom and you'll be in business chap.

ok
so i have connected everything up!
however the rmt wire (one that turns the amp on and off)

well i am not sure what to connect it to!

in the picture further up on this thread (now my head unit) the black wire is what i think it should be however it has a socket thingy on the end

anyway i stripped the black rubber coating off to find some wire which enclosed another wire (same gauge as my rmt wire)

so what should i do?

connect it to the small wire inside....the wire enclosing the small wire, both, or do i need to get some adapter socket thingy which i wire onto my rmt wire and then plug into the headunit?

please help
....i am so close it is driving me crazy

ok yeah it works

thanks for your help

one other thing though is thatit doesnt turn off or on when putting my keys in (like my old unit)

now i have the red and yellow swapped over (red to yellow)
however there are 2 reds and one of them is loose...should i connect this to the spare port that the red and yellow have?
so double the two red up basically?

cheers
