Title: head gasket
Post by: ovalthemoon on 28 November 2004, 21:10
after reading daves story i'm now a little gutted, my HG went on my 83 cabby gti, fixed it with genuine parts and had the head skimmed, alls fine but looked at the car the other week (don't use it that often now) to find the dreaded mayo again as with dave none in the dip stick or cam cover area, spare time today so retook the head off to find a perfect HG, bah but a little mayo down there, could this be the oil bit or is the head to far gone

That 'mayo' can sometimes appear, especially at this time of the year, without there being any problem with the headgasket. Things can get very damp at this time of the year and through condensation etc., you can get water in the oil system. If you only do short runs then the engine never really gets hot enough to burn the water off - hence the mayo. A good long run usually sorts that one out.

well the car was last used at bug jam in july can seemed fine then went to the car a couple of weeks ago, just decided to check the water before i went out and there was the mayo, but didn't think to take it for a run bahh!!!! heads now been stripped and cleaned, also been advised by vw that my cabby (83 1.8dx)  has a external oil cooler by the rad which could be leaking aka the culprit ?45 to replace, so hopefully jobs a goodun

As long as you changed the strreeeeeeetch bolts when you did the head it should be ok.

You do get mayo this time of year especially if you only do short journeys. If you go for a long run or leave the car idling for a while it should take care of itself.

Ho Ho Ho!

not being funny but did you flush the oil and change it when you did the gasket, and also flush the coolant? because if theres any contamination it'll just come back even if theres nothing wrong because you'll still have sh!te in your system. just a thought before you decide to take a large heavy thing to it. if you did flush both i wouldn't know what to suggest.
