Title: Reviving the driving experiance of a Mk1 Cab
Post by: G-Lader on 28 November 2004, 13:11
Got a H plate MK1 with all history and mots, only 78k thats in excellent nick so the car has been looked after in its life but by VW Garages only I suspect.
The driving experiance is not great - steering is a little vague and the car feels very unsporting in handling - more wallowy(?)

Cars had new std shocks within the last year and I want to keep the car looking std so no suspension drop.

What should be done to improve the drive - how does front upper and lower and rear upper and lower braces effect the handling? Are they all reqd or are some more important than others? Which make are cheap but still good and where would I but them from?

Steering - not very direct in that there is slight movement left to right before the car steers?  Is this likely to be ball joints, bushes or the rack? Where should I start first to get some feeling back?

The car is such a joy to look at but does not drive like it looks!

Any help would be really appreciated

Thanks

If you're after strut braces then try strutbracer.co.uk. OMP stuff at pretty good value.

strut braces affect the handling by reducing body flex, the purpose of this is to keep the suspension geometry more constant.
rally car bodies are seam welded to improve the rigidity of the whole body of the car and to improve strength.

I'd be interested to find the resolution to this as mine suffers from the same effect!
