Anyone using the Nav Companion in their RNS510?
http://www.my-gti.com/714/volkswagen-labs-navcompanion-for-rns-510 (http://www.my-gti.com/714/volkswagen-labs-navcompanion-for-rns-510)
In theory it looks a good idea especially if you know where you are going in advance, say if you were heading off on a driving holiday it can save you the hassle of entering the details in the unit.
What it might come in really handy for is if you could download say POI that others have uploaded. That way you could have a whole SD card crammed full of different POI. As I'm sure the POI will be limited as to how many you can store on the RNS510.
Free WiFi spots would do me for starters.
-
Steve if you want and you know what POI you want I can stick them on a Map disc and send it with your unit before the courier picks it?
Darren
-
Hi Darren,
I'm not sure what's available.
Shell garages and fast food were already on the disk you supplied which were really handy. Wifi spots or football stadiums sound good.
-
Not a problem I've already got football stadiums in my poi collection so can stick that on, My current disc that ive just done has free wifi hotspots on so can put that on aswell...
If you put too many on it does start slowing the RNS510 down but you would have to have alot of poi.

Cheers Darren that's great.
I suppose I was spoiled with the TomTom where I could just download whatever POI I wanted and upload it to the unit again with no hassle and basically hardly any user intervention.
Stevie.

Yeah I use that...
Works just great !!!!
You download or take a picture (say e.g. of your home/house) up to 2 MB.
You load that picture in a new folder GPS Locations made on a SD Card.
You start the nav program and type in a postal code and attach the picture to it....
When you press new adress in the car you choose sd card and all the coloured pics appear..press start and away you go...
I advise you to add a full address instead of a postal code in case you do not know the exact housenumbers.....
Very cool feature
-
Cheers Erik sounds like a good feature.
What size of pictures are displayed?
Have you come across anywhere to download a list of stuff already in that format?
Cheers.
-
The pics on your nav screen are the size of ...uhhh...a winegum....
However if you have choosen one winegum....the pic becomes more then half the screen size and very sharp and pro...that following screen allows you to choose "info' (all the extra the info you have given it...say opening hours phone numbers...detailed adress..names of persons etc.)....and/or START...
I just download pics from the web of say my hotels, restaurants, clients, and even favorite car parks.......I even took a photo of my house...very cool if you press HOME..........I am amazed I am not hearing anybody else about this feature...
.
The cd card can ofcourse still be filled with MP3 music....your system will read both....
again the link...I have posted it here before as well as a translation...

Cheers Erik, much appreciated for doing that.
Looks a great feature, can't understand why its not been documented more.
Can't wait to try it.
-
Erik do you do anything else to activate it or assign the pictures to the locations?
I have put the locations in a folder called destinations. I have also put some jpg's in the same folder but the Picture icon is greyed out!!!
Is this the web site you linked to about it because even translated I can't understand it.

Okay here we go (I am to good for this world )
Press above link
1. Put your SD-card in the PC.
2. Make a new map and call it GPS-Pictures and a new map called Destinations on your SD card.
3. Make a few .jpg on your desktop call them Home, Work, Hotel etc.
4. In the nav com program fill out "INTERESSE" (=Interest) with e.g. your adress or postal code
5. In the nav com program fill out "ORT" (= Place) with e.g. London
6. Press "SUCHE STARTEN" (=start searching)
7. After finding your adress Press "BILD LADEN" (= load image)
8. Another screen pops up and Press "BLADEREN" (= browse)
9. Enter an image e.g Home.jpg from your desktop
10. Press "JETZ LADEN" (=load now)
11. Enter a titel e.g. Home
12. Enter "BESCHREIBUNG" (=info) e.g full adress, phone, opening hours
13. Press "FUR BILDNAVIGATION SPEICHERN" (= load as image navigation)
14. Now get your SD card out of the PC into the RNS
15. Enter Navigation and press new adress
16. Wait for the RNS to load the sd card will take a minute or so...from grey to black
17. Press SD card destinaton (or ask voice control)
AND BE AMAZED....
Now don't tell me I did not write this down "idiotproof" (because I am one myself)...
-
another link in your language....
http://www.cameluk.co.cc/Picnavi.htm
maybe more clear considering my translation skills... :lipsrsealed:
-
Thanks very much Erik for taking the trouble to do that.
I'll try it in a couple of hours as I'm just going out for a game of football. (must keep fit somehow!!)
Having a quick a look at your instructions, I think my difficulty was the site I was using,
http://vwlabs.com/ (http://vwlabs.com/) doesn't seem to give the opportunity to link pictures. I wonder why when its probably the same.
Cheers again,
Stevie

Have fun...I hope it is not raining...at the moment it is pouring down overhere....
-
Good morning Erik.
Sorry to high jack this thread, but do you have a 2-3 mm gap along the bottom between your rear LEDs and the bodywork of your car?
Would be grateful for your help.
-
......and.....did you get it working.... :smug:
-
Hi Erik,
yeah thanks got it working this morning. Been at work the rest of the day so unable to let you know.
Seems to be a good feature that isn't used that much.
I still say some kind of download site would be good with all that info already set up.
Thanks for the help Erik .
-
Good to hear...
This feature is only mentioned briefly in the RNS manual near the end...so briefly.... that you get tempted to skip it because the fun-factor doesn't sink in...
I wonder how many of us are using the RNS to its full ....I even do not dare to ask if somebody was succesfull putting in say all the 98 Ron gas stations with pump pictograms on the map.... :lipsrsealed:
-
Anyone know what happened to this concept?
I tried it out in the past and was quite impressed with what it could do but it doesn't seem to be available any more!!

What do you mean with not available...as far as I know in the Netherlands you can still fill your sdcard with the pics and nav info......

Haven't you heard Erik, that Mark Rutte is outlawing all media cards as they can be used to carry piracy?! Keep up man
The site now links to http://vwerl.com/ with no note of the Nav companion!!
-
I am afraid he will do a lot more.... :embarrassed:
Anyway I filled up my SD card with 30 or so adresses and I will update them next week when I hopefully will collect my new 2012 mode MKVI

Here you are
-
Since picked up my new car yesterday I can now confirm that the picture navigation still works as described....I also uploaded my selfdesigned bootlogo...
Very cool features....
-
I'm trying to get this to work as it sounds a great feature, more from being able to put addresses on the SD card from the VW Nav companion address page. Can you confirm from that if I place a *.vcf which I've cut and pasted the address into from the Nav Companion web page, the unit can pick this up and plan a route to it?
Sorry for the stupid question, but it seems good if it will do this. Trying to input the address on the RNS is not always a great experience and this could improve things greatly for me.
EDIT - sorted - the Nav Companion web page saves it as a *.vcf for use
-
No such thing as a stupid question....
I cannot confirm this...since I work strictly with the site only...
So I enter an adress or postal code...It searches and finds it .....or something close to it....I check if it supplies enough info in order to arrive where I want to arrive ...if not ...I do it again this time I enter everything manually....and finally I pick a nice picture from google images......and upload it.
I never touch the stuff again once succesfully uploaded.
I keep it as simple as possible because I am no wizzard with this stuff
BTW. SELFDESIGNED-BOOTLOGO-CHANGE-RNS510
my James Bond logo looks incredibly bad-ass and the quality surprises me truly. ...WONDERFUL

No more welcome to Volkswagen...

Honest to God
I made only two pics but when I tried to upload via my photobucket I suddenly was directed to a betaversion...after a couple of attemps I gave it a rest....a new GTI outside is very tempting and there is lots to program...so I chose the car
