Title: Has anyone else
Post by: flc1962 on 23 April 2010, 09:19
I'm getting ready to do my bit about the paint, or the quality of the paint. As we have mostly stated and this is my first car where I have seen so many stone chips within the first 6 months. Has anyone else written to VW or spoken to their stealer to find out more ?

Snoopy's blue GTI has issues with overspray, parts not sprayed, etc....

Hopefully he's along in a minute to tell you his course of action...

Flc1962, I know you are round about the Glasgow area but did you get your car from a Glasgow dealer?
My bonnet is in a shocking state as well. I do drive fast but don't tailgate.
I've not changed my driving style from other cars and I've never experienced anything like it with them.

How bad is it? Is it completely peppered and after how long?
All this business of tailgaiting etc cannot cause such excessive damage to bonnets or other body parts. It must be a paint issue. There were similar horror stories on the CivicInfo forum. These water based paints are applied in such thin layers that a feather will chip the paint off!

I would go out and photograph it but the neighbours would all be twitching at their curtains thinking I've lost it.

Its bad enough considering I only got the car in October.

Bugger the neighbours. Maybe not on second thoughts, if they are antique and cracked! Take a piccy. It is ridiculous to have so much damage.

From ARNOLD over the south side Kilmarnock RD. I don't tail gate and as you say have not changed my driving style. I think p3asa is right, as I'm noticing paint chips where there is no damage, looks like trolly scrapes but no dent at all. The front bumper and bonett are the worst I've ever seen. I have the name of the GM in ARNOLD C think I will draft him a wee email for advice to start the wheels turning. FFS I've only done 4000 miles.

I don't think cars behind me will suffer as I keep pulling away...lol

I still think this is more to do with the shocking state of the roads at the moment.

I have had a cracked windscreen, a fog lamp replaced and have a small ding in a headlamp.

Nothing to do with the quality of paint.

What people have to remember we've just had the worst winter in 50 years and we all know the state of the roads now. My Mk5 has gained more chips this winter than any previous car or year (and I don't tail gate either).
The fact the Mk6 was launched in the summer before this winter is prompting a lot of talk that the issue is "different" paint being used on the Mk6. When you read across various forums stone chipping being worse than any previous experience is affecting all cars.

I dont agree with some people on this thread, I have to say the paintwork is very soft my motor, and thats why its chipping a lot also the layers of paint are very thin!! VW CS need to know about this issue? So your saying that the auto express car which is on long term test is down to the roads? I dont thinkso somehow, there car is peppered with chips, and mine is also building up chips and its not from bad roads no way!!

My paint is OK.

It's just the lamps and windscreen. Lucky or unlucky I don't know.

The amount of pot holes and debris from the pot holes and debris from the bodging of the pot holes is to blame I think.

The bad roads are doubtless a contributing factor, but as both Steve and I feel, there is an even bigger contribution due to the weakness of the paint application. I have spoken to a couple of guys from bodyshops and they feel that the lack of hardness/toughness and the thin layer of the water based paint is very much to blame. Flat colours seem to suffer more I am informed.

I have had my car for exactly one month and have suffered just one minute chip (lucky!) on the inside of the rear number plate housing. Difficult to see unless you are looking for it. I have very carefully touched it up. Strange place, I must confess.

I don't know whether Toughsealing my car will help in the long term. I'll wait and see. However, I don't hold much hope to be chipless for very long.

I also think its the flat colours  that are suffering from this issue, mine is Candy white, and already have about 4 chips around the front end only 19,00 miles on the clock, non on the bonnet yet thanks god.

Hi all

I don't know whether it is because my car is one of the early ones (ordered 23rd May and collected 26th July) but I don't seem to have any issues with my paintwork at all.

I feel for all of you having problems there's nothing worse than a nice shiny car pitted with road debris.

Wish you luck with the paint detailers at the stealers

VWCS do know  they have had 3 emails with 3 PDFs full of info and photos from me in the past month about it. 1 about my own paint issues and concerns for my own car and other also including with copys of articles about the paint issues others are suffering which i have concerns over.

I have not brought to there attension the 'wet sponge' problem.
As i would like them to see the video of mine on youtube but i cannot show that as they will say i should not have took the arch out  So need someone else to send that one to VWcs.

Here we go:
Got my second chip today. Now its on the front bumper. It is tiny, but I saw it!
So now I have one on the back bumper and one on the front. Both offside!
By the time I change the car, it would be a small pox case!
Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggghhhhh!

You know something, I heard the little frucker hit the bumper.
It was like a rifle shot and I was not tailgating.
Talk about 'chip and pin'!

the bodging of potholes is a major factor as these break up really quick...leaving more debris...they did a bodge job on the M60 ferchristsakes!

The water based paint is also softer for def. hoping when my bonnet gets covered its a couple of extra layers to protect it  :lipsrsealed:

Had a very careful look just this minute: There's a white GTi 3 door '59 plate just around the corner from me and the lucky sod/sodette does not have a single paint chip! How????
The awful thing is that the undercoat on the bumper on my red car is black and the chips stick out like 'Pork Sausages at a Jewish Wedding'!  (No offence meant, it's just an expression. Yallah!)
