Title: This all legal smeagle?
Post by: Bellend on 23 April 2010, 00:13
My mum and dad have got their own vehicles and I've got a MK3 Golf but I can't afford to insure it on my own.

So I was gonna put it in parents name but they will drive it around all day and I'll use it after work. I.E they will drive it more then me.

Also I want to modify it so the insurance companies just think I'm fronting it don't they?

Yes would be classed as fronting

Is it fronting though mate?

Car will belong to one of my parents and they will drive the car the most, about 75% of the time and I'll do the other 25%.

I'll use a work car to get to work.

insurance companies even ASSIST you NOT to front a policy these days .

Get it in your name, ADD an older driver or two with a good record and it greatly reduces the premium, i being my daughters down £300 a year - am named on another car and a bike policy for this very reason, as long as drive the vehcile once ayear then its all legal.

Plus you will be getting on the no claims bonus ladder - all good for when you do finally upgrade to a GTI

Insurance is still 3.8K on a Micra with my parents on it.

In a year I don't have to worry about insurance as I'll be on a proper traders at 18. That's an extra £1K for my boss to add me but totally worth it.

How long ago was that then?

Basically, with my dad as the holder + main driver (and I'm not bullsh!tting he will be) with modifications declared it comes out at £1583.

Otherwise a stock car is rediculous ammounts.

Phoned a couple of companies up direct and still stupid quotes.

But I asked one about  my situation, parents driving my car because theirs is bad on fuel etc. and them driving it more then me and me having a work car and they said it's all cool!    Providing the main driver owns the log book etc and does most of the driving of the vehicle.

Sorrrrted.

Goodo,
glad you asked the insurers about your situation.  I would not have thought this comes under fronting because, you have use of another vehicle as your main ride and you wouldn't have owned the golf and you would drive it less the the owner/main driver. No fronting at all but simply your parents let you choose the car for them.
I would agree with the "get on the ladder and earn ncd/ncb" but as you will have a traders policy that is all irrelevant as ncd/ncb isn't transferible most of the time, in that way.

What were the conditions of getting a tradres policy?

It's as simple as this:

- Shop around

- Policy and car in your own name

- Add parents as named drivers

- Don't front

- Earn no claims yourself
