Hi all,
new to the forum and hello from Perth, Western Australia.
I am 3000 km in to my new GTI and am very happy all in all but am noticing whistling sound from around driver's side once speed is at 60 km/h (45 mph).
Does anyone else experience this?
Cheers,
ozzyc

Hello... welcome.. is it brand new?... if not which year/mk is it?
-
can't help myself from saying, birds nest?
-
hi, yes, apologies - should have been clearer - 2010 model, purchased brand new mid march.
And yes, I've checked for bird's nests

Is it a 3-door as well? I've heard of some 3-doors that have had their strike plates adjusted to close the door firmer due to noise slipping through.
-
No - 5 door. but thanks Awry - I will investigate strike plates as a cause. I'm also told 'rain channels' may require adjustment but I'm not exactly sure where these are.

I get this sometimes... sounds like the window is open. Just drive faster until the noise goes away

Welcome and Congrtulations.
Get a hearing loss, turn the sound system louder and Charlie is your aunt!
Seriously, get the dealer to have a look. Mine seems ok.
More details and pics of your car, please?
Have you named it? Is she called Matilda?
-
Ha - thanks for the tips guys
Carbon steel grey, black leather interior, sun roof, 18" alloys.
As yet, unnamed, but Matilda's not a bad option
Cheers,
ozzyc
p.s. I'll post some pics soon

I have the same on my Golf R...
Over about 60mph I get a whistling / squealing noise. It sounds like there is a mouse inside my door!
I emailed my dealer a list of 'niggles' the other day and he called yesterday telling me to come in when its convenient and we can get them sorted.
Nothing major - just little things I'd like sorted.

I've heard some very light whistling sound as well. It happened at about 50-60mph. Mine is coming from the passenger side and remember my car is left hand drive. I heard it two days ago when I test drove my brand new GTI after picking it up at the dealers. I haven't noticed it lately though. I think it may have been the huge doors not sealing properly after closing.
If anyone finds out what it is please update this thread. :) I have a feeling the whistling sound will be back. :P

Will do, awry- I'm taking mine back to the dealer Wednesday next (28 April) and will discuss with the service technicians as I've booked enough time with them to go for a drive and demonstrate the sound.
As I've said, their over the phone advice is that it may be "rain channel" related though I will get them to check the doors and seals.

I took mine out for a spirited run last night...
It was howling at above 60ish - but it must depend which way the wind is going as some times it does it, and some times it doesn't!
-
just for the record, i've also noticed a whistling noise from the drivers window! can't remember if its when the window is open or not though but its weird! just turn up the dynaudio!!

Count me in for having this problem. Dealership has been informed and car is due in for a look when I get time off work. Glad to hear it isn't just me.
-
As an experimanr try putting a bit tape over the sides and edges of the indicators (turn signals in the door mirrors) and see if the sound stops
-
Thanks Snoopy - I will ask service technicians to try that tomorrow.

Hi All,
I promised I would get back once I had the "whistling" problem rectified so here goes:
After one service, where the dealership failed to rectify the problem, I returned and they contacted VW in Germany to ask what could be done. VW determined that they wanted additional testing done and for the fault to be diagnosed. This was done and it turns out the problem is related to the rain channel (black rubber strip) that sits along the vertical edges of the windscreen. The technician explained that air can enter the grill, travel under the bonnet, then depending how the rain channel sits -emit a whistle much like we "whistle" once we get the right shape with our lips etc;
Anyways, some adjustments were made around the grill, I'm not sure where exactly, but I understand there are a number of adjustable components under there, and a new rain channel was fitted to my GTI.
I picked her up last night and can happily report that it is now whisper quiet and cabin noise is markedly less. The whisle has disappeared as well.
The lesson is - if you are experiencing this issue, ask your technician to look at the rain channels and let them know that VW is aware of the fault and there is a known fix.
cheers,
Ozzyc

Cheers for the update!
I think mine defo needs looking at. on my way back from peter kay last night(which was excellent by the way ) the whistling was getting almost embarassing! tried opening and closing the window a number of times, but it just didnt work.
To make matters worse my mate in the back was bouncing around like he was on a pogo! Without going off topic i dont think my car has been right since being repaired. Everytime I go over 80mph the steering vibrates like crazy. Did inform the dealers about this but they said the wheels had been replaced. Since I have swapped the fronts to the back the back end is the same as the front was!

Thanks for the update.
Sounds like you have a wheel balance problem or a faulty tyre then but i guess you know that.
