Title: should i do it?
Post by: Nino on 21 April 2010, 07:48
Hey peps,

OK so for the last couple of months ive noticed my exsault system has been blowing, so i took it to kik fit and they tell me my whole CAT & backbox are buggered plus there convinced my engine is only running on 3 Clinders  :undecided:

now i can agree that my exsualt system is bugged but with my car still able to reach speeds over 100mph i found it hard to beleave that it was only running on 3 cil.

i took it to a company call "pro speeds" for a 2nd opinion, tell have told me that my car is defo mis firing, he thinks it could be down to the coil pack? but he has looked and told me that my Flexi pipe, Cat and backbox all need replacing.

Now he told me that he will put on a New CAT, Felxi pipe & twin pipe backbox full stainless steel with a life time warrenty for £487.
I have it booxed in for next monday and im pritty excited to get it fixed, he has advised me that i get my engine tuned to stop the misfire, im thinking that the engine is finding it hard to push out the pressure because of the condision the backbox and exsualt sysem is in, the car only sound slike it isnt running correct when it is idel but if i give it alittle rev the shuddering stops (which i was told is a misfire)

What do you guys think?

its a 1.8 gv GL btw.

I would seek a 3rd opinion, £487 is a lot of money to fork out.

Id try and stay away from sh*t fit!!
i had a similar problem they told me my mid box and back box needed replacing and it was going to cost me around £100 a piece fitted, it was a while back but cant remember the exact figure!!
So i went to a auto spares and picked them both up for around £70 and had a go at them with a mate.
It turns out the problem is still there, cheers sh*t fit!!
so i took it to a friend of a friends garage and he diagnosed it as the flexi-pipe and fixed the problem for £100!

firstly if your engine was only running on 3 cylinders you'd definately know about it (unless it's an 8v cause they're all slow

if it's misfiring then it's probably to do with the fact that your cat and exhaust are shagged!

a cat for a mk3 gti isn't that dear and you can get a complete stainless system for £350

plus i'd never buy from kwik fit. they could sell you cheap stainless parts with thin walls (like magnex ones) that make too much noise

+1 :D

Am i reading incorrectly but isn't he saying that this "Pro sports" place is charging the £487?
If you were doing all this work i would invest in a COMPLETE new pipe!
Solves the problem of other bits going for years to come :)

Definately agree with that! You can usually get the same job done for less cash and to a higher quality if you shop around!

It'd be noticeable if you were only firing on 3 cylinders,

1. You'd hear it spluttering.
2. You'd find your using more petrol.
3. Power will be down

and regarding '3' wether its an 8v or not, its irrelivant.

And i'd probably beat you's in your 16v's anyway

Well for the money i will be getting a new Flexipipe, a new CAT and a new twin backbox and new piping from front to back all in stainless steel for the £487.

Now regrading to your post about my car only firing on 3 Cil...

1: my car is using a good amount of petrol im getting about 22 MPG but its all town driving.
2: the Car kinda spluttering but im putting that down to the fact that because my cat & backbox are blown my car is strullging tp push out the air pressure????

as for loss of power im still getting 109MPH???

I think most 8vs have a slightly juddery idle. mine does. So you think the cat is blocked? have you had it scanned for fault codes?

My mk3 also has a juddery idle but is fine when driving. 487 is a hell of alot of money powerflow or longlife build a stainless system alot cheaper than that
