changed my rocker cover gasket today as it was leaking badly.
now ive connected and fitted everything back as it should be but the car keeps stalling. This must mean there is an air leak?
i cant see any problems?
changed the gasket for a rubber one if this helps with an ideas?

you probably pulled off a vacuum pipe to do with the idle ???
-
checked everything. had to adjust the idle and fuel mixture to bring it to idle but will be going to the garage for a proper 'tune' now :-\
While im there. getting the cam belt done so its not so bad after all
-
rocker cover seal still leaks!
how tight do you do these nuts up?

first make sure you did it right there is an order to tightening the bolts and yes they need to be set to the correct torque but no clue what that is maybe haynes or bentleys might help sorry
-
Not very tight at all, according to Haynes 10Nm, 7 lbf ft
-
ok. so anyone got the order?
thanx peeps
-
yer sorry
its not that important
but basically start with the middle and the do one on either side till you get them all
cant recall the number of bolts but i think its either 8 or 10
8 6 1 3 9
10 4 2 5 7
think of each hole as a number also might sound silly but check the gasket is the right way up i no on cylinder and sump its got something like umbo or top on it to say thats the top but there all differnt.
-
thanx Rain your a star :)
the gasket only fits one way so its defo the right way.
-
you would be suprised at the amount of ppl that have it wrong even worse when they do it on the head gasket and put the engine back together :S
hope it works if not check where its leaking and examine the gasket for a reason sometimes if the the old gasket breaks or deteriates you get bits of it stuck around the edges.

HI Blue.
There was a modified gasket available from VW, you had to replace the studs and the gasket was made of rubber. The new studs had a shoulder on them to stop over tightening and crushing the gasket. Cant find the part no at the mo, but worth speaking to the stealer if the oil leak is a problem.
-
by any chance are they little plastic washers?
they was already on mine i just replaced cause the oil was eating them up.
-
thanx alot peeps. great help.
I had to change the studs to go with the gasket and this has stoped the leak.
Might be something worth remembering when changing one.
