does anyone know if the MK2 had intermittant wipers on the GTI as i was talking to another mk2 owner and they have them but i dont and only differnce is mine has the mfa thingy. just wondering weather its broke or weather this is normal.
-
Yep all mk2 golfs have the intermittants setting on the front wipers.
While we're on the subject excuse me while I just hijack the thread:
Does anybody know if early mk2's had the intermittant setting on the rear wiper??? My winter runabout is a 1984 1.3 mk2 and as soon as you push the stalk the wiper completes two or three passes then stops for good. I've tried pushing the stalk really quickly but it does the same, obviously the way the mk2 picks up so much water at the rear the intermittant setting is really useful especially on motorways. I'm getting really bored of pushing the stalk every couple of minutes!!!
Should a 1984 mk2 have the intermittant rear wiper setting???
Sorry for the hijack Rain!!!

Mine is a H reg Gti and it has intermitant wipers with the right wiper stalk in the down position.
Think that is normal as I'm sure my older small bumper F reg Gti had the same. :-\
Can't say about the rears on early ones as mine was siezed and I never did get around to fixing it :D
-
no clue about the rear wiper as mine does that but then is intermittant it goes like 3 times then if i dont press it again it goes off like every 10 seconds.
my right stalk has 2 up positions but no down not sure why ive asked a few ppl and they all have intermittant as the down position.
-
The wiper stalk on my last 8v wouldn't go into the intermittant down position Rain, it also didn't wash the front windows when pulled back so I put it down to the stalk being knackered!
Yours has probably done the same, you can normally pick them up on ebay for about a fiver just make sure you get the right year.
That's the problem with my rear wiper it doesn't go off about every 10secs just does the three or so wipes and switches off for good.
-
My rear one had intermediat, untill i shaved it off ;D
Only problem was once it started, it never stopped!
-
lol you push it back once to turn it on and again to turn it off, ill admit its annoying but there are so many cars that do it. not as bad as the new vauxhall astra and vectra there indicators are like that you push left/right once to turn it on and then push the same direction again to turn it off unless it turns off itself i thought the rental car was broke almost took it back i was holding it up and turning cause it didnt stay on it just went back to normal off position :S
-
With the rear, it wipes once then agin every 10 secs with just one push, with two pushes, it just wipes once, and when you hold it it wipes for about three times when you release it.
If its not doing that, it could perhaps be the relay, as thats what controls the wiping. I think its the really big one that sticks out further than the rest of them?
-
think its off to sgf to get me a wiper stalk and a drivers mirror as mine just fell off tonight .

if you take your wiper stalk off the column you may find a little white plastic thingy slid in amongst all the black plastic. pull it out and your stalk will go down and give you intermittant. i always wished i had it on mine then some one said this might be the case and low and behold.......little white plastic thingy, chucked it away, i now have intermittant..
-
them cheeky F**ks bet they charged over a ton for intermittant wipers :P
quick how to....
Remove your steering wheel sure plenty of you have but for those who havent its simple pop the horn(making sure ignition is off i made this mistake as i had radio on) either lock the steering or put it dead straight and hold it there while undoing the bolt and give it a good hard tug to pull it off, using white chalk or crayon can help to mark it if you really want to.
now what your left with is a metal disk in the middle there are 3 screws on this top left, top right and bottom middle remove these and it is probably a good idea to remove the undercover for the ignition and steering lock.
ok heres the tricky bit ;D remove the 2 cables underneath the indicator stalk and put your hands around the rear of the 2 stalks and push forward as far as you can trying to get the steering bush as far inside the centre hole as possible and hold the wiper centre part in one hand and slide to the left youll see its connected to something on the left its for the flashers and full beamonce its off that you can pull it off.
now your looking at the wiper stalk mechanism on the top left there is a small white insert its around a 10mm wide and about 5mm high use a screw driver to push it out., on the off chance yours is differnt just look at the other end of the stalk above the inner arm thats where the insert is.
ok now you have to put it all back together again making sure you get your steering wheel in the correct position. turn on the ignition(this is the part i was deafened by the horn so after 5 minutes fixing that) push the wiper arm down it wont work at first probably cause the relay has never used that circuit before but it will start slow and pick up speed to where its going continuos not to worry just leave it on and it will slowy get it right after about 30 seconds to a minute youll have intermittant wipers :D
Thanks gtijoe :'(

Nice tut Rain!

Did you guys know that the intermittent wipe can actually be programmed - i.e you can set the delay between successive wipes!
Try it:
1) Tap the wiper stalk down to engage intermittent wipe
2) Immediately return the stalk back to the neutral position (centre) after the wiper has completed the first wipe
3) The length of time between now and when you put the stalk back down to engage intermittent wipe will be the delay set between successive wipes!
This has worked on all MK2's ive owned and i know for a fact it goes back as far as a MK2 1986 8V GTi.
Its also standard on all MK3's as far as i know...
I have not tried this yet but sounds good :)

You need a variable intermittant relay as fitted to some MK3s and Passats etc. Goes straight in! Apparently some MK2 GTIs had it as std but not all of em. I'll check the part number for mine when I get home tonight!
