Title: Second thoughts about Monza Shadows
Post by: Hartside on 19 April 2010, 19:53
I've ordered my GTI with the 18" Monza Shadows and after reading about white worm and refurb costs on these I'm having second thoughts. I'm thinking about just getting the 17" Monzas and buying a set of after markets if I feel the need. Might even just stick with the 17" Monzas. What's everyones thoughts?

Stick with the 18" Shadows for a £400 upgrade and sell them on for about £900 as new,
then buy some after market alloys or cheaper 17" Monzas

NO... go for the Monza Shadows. TBO I think you would be disapointed with the look of the car without them. There's nothing better when you've cleaned the car and the Monza's are gleaming away...

I thought i would not be happy with the 17s but i am. Each to there own buy i would never own a polished / lac wheel finish again after previous cars. The mk6 has enough problerms without me worrying about the wheels too

+1 absolutely!

But then again on a white or silver car 'rocco 18" or even 19" ones would look fabulous. But that's 'IMO' which sometimes is very suspect!

If you did take the 18 Monzas I could be tempted to buy them from you, new of course..... Love them wheels as they say you either hate them or love them...

That's exectly what I did (only it was more because I don't like the way the Shadows look). I bought a set of 18" Interlagos from Germany and gave them to my dealer, so he could fit them as soon as the car arrived last August. I then presold the 17" Monzas and shipped them to the buyer when my car was delivered.

Worked like a dream and the total cost to me was about £100

I agree. I've got a lot of positive comment on them. They seem to be the first thing they comment on too. The look on the Monza's when passing by at low speed is very nice. :D

My second pair for the winter tyres will probably have BBS CH or CK though.

As usual personal taste comes into it, but I'll back up what several other have said; stick with the Monza's and you won't be disappointed, they look superb and really give the car a special appeal.[You won't see many other cars with them on either]
Don't be put off by worm issues [probably got chipped and not repaired quickly enough]

Possibly but a lot of the worm issues occur in the bends of the wheel and there is nothing you can do about it.

Not just that sorry theres alot of reasons. Been there had polished lacx wheels on Audis, SEATs and VW in the past NEVER AGAIN. All those type of finish wheels suffer it. Its not just it lifting due to damage it lifts due to lack of keying to the surface bacause the surface has been machined.

It's up to peoples' individual preferences of course but I'm made up with the 18" monzas. I've lost count of the admiring glances I've had- included a few guys from work crowded around them the other day.

In my opinion, they were one of the first accessories I ordered and didn't look back. Granted I'm seriously careful when I'm parking though to avoid any nasty scraping sounds though ...

Another reason i did not go for them i have had SEATs with big polished/lac wheels on in the past and i spent far too long worrying about bent rims, damage to rims etc. With the 17s i just drive the car and enjoy it. The 17s are also the faster wheels as shown by evo magazine

Title: Re: Second thoughts about Monza Shadows
Post by: AlanD on 21 April 2010, 09:29
I tried to explain but couldnt put what I had in my head into words so used the internet to explain lol:

"When tires bounce, a given amount of suspension hardware can put them back  in contact with the road quicker if they have low mass. So smaller tires should give better handling. It is not always engines pushing tires.  Often tires push engines back so smaller wheels have less angular inertia and less torque when skidding so they present less threat of damaging the power-train metal parts."

TBH its going to be really MINIMAL ;)

AlanD:
Thanks.
What confused me was the word 'faster' as in speed. It is used here often for 'better', I now realise. Silly me.
I agree totally that lighter and narrower wheels and tyres are 'faster' - better ride, handling, steering. The bigger wheels are mainly a look thing and also seem to be more noisy at speed! Am I right?
Title: Re: Second thoughts about Monza Shadows
Post by: AlanD on 21 April 2010, 09:54
Noise really depends on tyres more than anything but bigger wheels will give you a "harsher" ride.

I went from 17s to 18s on my MK5 and didnt notice even the slightest bit of diffrence . . . I think a lot of it is a placebo effect imo.

I went from 18" Monzas to 17" Monzas between my rejected Mark 6 GTI and the new replacement GTI.

The ride quality on the 17"s is far superior and I talk from experience.

They also look mint against DBP paintwork, but not so sure if they work as well visually on the other colours

The 18"s are purely a vanity thing.  When you are driving the car, who cares

And if you kerb them, much less of an issue.

True, true, true.
That is why I got ACC with the 18" Shodows as I was a bit concerned with the ride on terrible London roads.
However, even in 'Sport mode', the ride is superb!

Its not far superior at all.

They also look mint against DBP paintwork, but not so sure if they work as well visually on the other colours
They dont look mint, maybe they might do if you lower the car about 10cm as the wheel arch gap makes them look like polo mints

The 18"s are purely a vanity thing.  When you are driving the car, who cares
If its a vanity thing, why did you pick the colour of car you drive ? When your driving the car, who cares ?

And if you kerb them, much less of an issue.
In what way ?

I think the MKV looks ok on the standard 17" rims, probably because it's features/edges are rounder, but the 17" look totally lost on the MKVI, they're way too small IMO.

As has been said, spec the 18" and sell 'em for a profit...? :afro:

i really like the monza shadows - it completes the 'look' of the GTI in my opinion, although i do think it's 75% of the reason why these kind of cars attract the 'wrong kind of crowd' like other guys thinking you want a race when the lights turn green...  :undecided:

Got my first stone chip on the rear nearside Monza Shadow. It is very small but it is annoying. I should expect this due to the very large exposed surface area. I dread to think how many more will pepper the wheels in the next few years.
I love the wheels and they are very easy to kep clean. However, I am afraid our terrible roads will take a heavy toll on them.

Ford always provide this with their touch-up paints.
Otherwise, Halfords?

Got my Candy White VW touch up kit yesterday...hoping not to have to use it, but just incase. It comes with a clear coat touch up as well..2 part kit £8..not bad.

Seem to be finding the Candy White is holding up better than the DBP...it seemed softer and a lot more prone to stone chips.

Well I am wrong again it seems. I just got a touch up pen with no clear coat.
Same with my flat red Honda.
Try putting the clear coat on after the paint and you can end up with a mess!

Hi Gizzy,
Sorry to hear about this. Horrible. Did you get his Reg No. It can be clasified as an accident due to his 'driving without due care and attention'.
Rolfe with a duck and now you with a dick(head)!
Do you think you need them refurbishing.
You can get the clear coat from VW with your body colour touch-up paint.

Oh right thanks, no don't think they're too bad depends on whether I can live with the scrapes or not you know it's one of those cases where a blind man would be pleased to see them but to me they look absolutely huge.

Will pop along to my stealer and see about a touch up kit and ask them what they reckon.

Probably say I'm quackers  and that they can't see anything much to make a fuss over.

And no I didn't get a reg no I was too intent on getting my poor Bonnie out of the way

All the best

I would get them fixed if it upsets you. It would me.
Both together, then you will be one wheel short and without a car. Do one at a time, the worst one first.

Well, I've been struggling with myself for weeks now and today I cancelled the Monza Shadows. I'm going with the std 17" Monza wheels for now with the intention of a set of 18" Vancouvers if I come across them, keeping the 17" Monza's for a set of winter tyres. I'm more of a spoke alloy person and while the Shadows are nice, they are just not for me.

Hi Neil.
You are so right. However, I have yet to kerb an alloy on my cars! Now that I have said this, sh!t will happen!

Now, a slight change of topic. I love ACC. It is the definitive option. The car is a dream to drive in 'comfort'. Perfect handling, fabulous ride and now so quiet. But make sure tyre pressures are exactly 2.6!
Today, I gave it some wellie and boy did all the electronics work like mad! My cousin's BMW 330i coupe was left in shock! All within speed limits I assure you!

No re-map yet as I have to change Insurance Company first from Zurich to Admiral or Elephant.

I have decided not to do the sideskirts for now. Just the rear diffuser, as I have a spare one due to very slight damage.
Did you know that each side skirt is approx £88 + VAT? I have no intention of driving around skirtless while they are being titivated. (The rear diffuser was £68.17 inc VAT)

Went down to Stevep's house a couple of months back, he supplied, coded & fitted them for me. Also fitted a reverse camera at the same time.

SteveP is going to do mine also as it is logistically more convenient.

Anyway... moving swiftly on, I love my Monza Shadow's, especially on my black car.  The black innards seem to accentuate the brushed effect on the black paintwork.

Waiting to hear from Darren. He has been in touch with me by PM just recently to answer a question.
He must be very busy.
He is going to supply and fit the RNS510 and Bluetooth.
SteveP the LEDs.

Mm when I asked dealers about rear camera I was told you cannot retrofit!! so how easy was it for SteveP to fit yours? was it pricey?

Really happy with the rearview camera, great little gadget.

The camera, leads etc and setup(updating firmware, coding etc) cost £370+fitting from SteveP.

Around 2 hours to fit.

Sounds a bit pricey, wish I'd gone for the option at build think it was only £150, never mind will have to think it over MrP is supplying me with LEDs soon and I hope will be fitting them for me too so if I go for the camera option maybe he wil fit it then too.  Will it work with the RCD510.

yeah it works with the RCD510.

I recently changed to a RNS510 (cheers Darren) and have still to get it coded with VAG.COM and can't believe how much I have missed not having the camera.

I think it would certainly be one of my first dealer options if I was to get a new car. Its certainly not a gimmick.
