Title: Volcanic Ash
Post by: Guy on 17 April 2010, 19:54
For vehicles:
Remove ash from your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. Prolonged exposure to volcanic ash and dust can damage the paint and glass.
Carefully wash the ash from your vehicle with a stream of water from a garden hose. Volcanic ash is very abrasive and can easily scratch your vehicle.
Never wipe, brush or mop the ash or dust that accumulates on your vehicle or windows.
Avoid prolonged driving in airborne or accumulated volcanic ash. Volcanic ash or dust can cause severe damage to your engine.
If your vehicle is exposed to volcanic ash, change your air filter and have your vehicle checked by a qualified auto mechanic as soon as possible.
Avoid using windshield wipers if at all possible as glass scratching may occur. Replace any windshield wiper blades that are damaged from the effects of the fallout.

in short, i wouldn't be 'blasting' the ash off... 'sheet' it off using a hose and then if you have it use snowfoam...

volcanic ash is pretty aggressive stuff by all accounts so easy as you go chaps

Getting sick and tired of it now, got up this morning after it was bucketing down last night to find my car covered in the crap. The car will get a good bath tonight, a nice little rub down and a good cuddle from me though

p.s. Does this ash eat away the wax layer ? I'm just wondering if its worthwhile using my Red Mist on it as a top up after washing it tonight ?

My car is covered with it and cause it's in black colour it's more prominent. It needs cleaning asap. I guess need to put car cover to keep it safe from it and use second car till it's sorted

everything eats at the wax layer... thats why it is your sacrificial layer and not your clearcoat

looking at the deposits on the car I cleaned day before last I am not sure how much of it is ash and how much of it is pollen - either way it is better to be safe than sorry and certainly follow the guidelines above

i saw someone wearing one of those filter mask things yesterday that doctors wear... he clearly thinks this volcanic ash contains something impressive. My car is also covered in it again... after waxing yesterday! i may have to invest in a car cover if this ash is staying around for a while. around 100 years ago this thing lasted just under a year didnt it ? wondering if anyone else can confirm this as its only the rumour on the street round here.

I work on Airplanes and everythign that has been given to us by the Experts that included data from Mt. St. Helens was DO NOT WASH IT OFF instead VACUUM it off.  This was going to be a problem with 747 size aircraft as this would take a very long time with a very long extension cord.
Maybe it is different for cars than Airplanes but no way were we supposed to wash it off

that is fine but i could envisage problems with this...

1) in some cases, like on my car, the ash wasn't just easy to vacuum off... it was lightly bonded so wouldn't have come off without addition of a liquid
2) taking a vacuum to a car could cause more damage... i can imagine some might want to use the 'brush' attachment and I don't know what damage that might cause
c) most people only have domestic vacuums which aren't disposable, if you think that you would be heating up the vacuum (most vacuum cleaners get hot) I can see that the very fine particles and glass particles could cause damage to the vacuum itself... most vacuum cleaners cannot even cope with builders dust

Snow foam lance all the way! Totally stunned how good it is at removing dust and ash from the car.
