as above is there any thread out there for changing rack and does any one have any idea roughley on the price of a new rack
-
you can get a reconditioned rack off ebay for £130, I fitted on last year and its been fine.
as for fitting its not to bad your need a extra pair of hands to get the rack in and out. took about 4 hours to fit and align the wheels
I got quoted £700 at a garage, new rack was £400, new track rod ends and wheel alignment + labour
-
are the racks model the same on all cars ie mine is a 20v non turbo i have seen a 1.8t one and a 1.4 one would these fit and is there so will i need a new rack plus track rod ends
-
I think the only different rack is the R32/TT quick rack all the rest are the same
you want new rack, track rod ends and some fluid
-
is it a defenate no no to using the car then even if i carry a bottle of fluid with me

cheaper here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGEN-GOLF-MK4-1997-2005-POWER-STEERING-RACK_W0QQitemZ200348613679QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2ea5b53c2f)
offer £110 and they should accept it and this one is only a £50 surcharge unlike the one the old man Rich posted which is £140
-

you shouldnt drive it, you will loose the fluid very quickly and risk damaging the pump which is another £120
