aye re-reg your car in the Isle of Man for ?8 then you can run black/silver plates legally in the UK, like i used to do on my old 16v

Does it matter what reg your car is for the new plate??

Yes you can't change the plate on a car to a more recent one thus making it appear newer, e.g. you couldn't change the plate on an f reg motor to a g or later.

So how do you know how old the private plate is??

Depends what sort of plate it is really some are age related some aren't.
Six digit plates of the format DUB 123 were age related issue in the uk upto the early 60's.
Then you've got the plates with a letter suffix/prefix from the 60's up until the early 2000's followed by the 01/51 plates since.
As far as I'm aware special plates e.g. DUB 1 etc aren't age related at all (I'm guessing on that one though so could be wrong).

If you're going to get a Uk private plate check out DVLA 1st..

Most places advetising dont actually own the plates and buy them from the DVLA when you order it!!

DVLA say E1 DUB is ?1,199!!! if you can get it for ?300 get it!!

check this link DVLA (http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/en/Search/p/prefix?searched=yes&prefix=all&numbers=60&letter1=L&letter2=F&letter3=&pricefrom=&priceto=&x=100&y=4)

I'm more interested in suffix plates such as TOB 16V, AVW 16V etc does anywhere actually sell suffix plates or have they all been resigned to the scrap yards aboard rusty fords a long time ago???

Yeah that's what I thought, I'll have to keep my eye out.
Most annoying thing is I sent one of my old fords to the scrapheap years ago without even noticing it had the perfect plate on it for me!!!

The cheapest way to get a plate is always to buy direct from DVLA http://www.dvla-som.co.uk  ;)

You can see their older plates being auctioned on there too (ie suffixed and pre 60s plates etc)

Always check out the DVLA before buying anywhere else - in most cases cheeky companies are advertising the plate before they themselves have it  :P

I bought and sold V5 DUB a few years back and the comedy of it was that it sold to someone wanting it nothing to do with cars but because his name was V Singh Dubsomething :)

Post by: topher on 24 November 2004, 12:54
was that before the V5 golf came out ?

Post by: jv on 24 November 2004, 12:56

And the price you see on DVLA includes vat and transfer fee....whereas others dont like new reg, elite transfers etc.

yup, absolutely correct. apart from the last bit. DUB 1 is age related and will be from the 1920-30s.

A1 (or 1A - cant remember) was awarded to the minister of transport of the day by himself as the very first number plate.

There?s a guy who lives near me with a Volvo S80 ? the big saloon.  He?s about 50, partial to tank tops and slacks.  Looks like a retired accountant.  His number private plate is YOB followed by three numbers.  It pi55es me up whenever I see him ? I presume they must be his initials but it looks f*cking stupid on an S80 driven by an old church goer!

So does that mean that actually ALL registrations are age related but in the case of plates like DUB 1 etc you are unlikely to be transferring them onto an even older vehicle so effectively you don't have to worry about the age issue with them???

if a plate is dateless, then you can transfer to any car you want.

so, 1906VC (my plate) which I think is in the late 30's could be transferred to a car from 1925.
