Over the last few months I've had the follwing fitted to my valver:
264deg high lift cams
Ported head
Flowed inlet
Magnex 6x4 oval stainless system
TSR 4 branch manifold
Today I've been on the rollers to get the fueling sorted, cams advanced and also a power run to so the gains which I was expecting.....
.....to my horror my motor is actually down on power sine I went on the rollers back in July when the car was standard. (til 5500 rpm 147bhp now over 141 then) and tourqe (til 5500 rpm): at 2500rpm 14lpft down, 4000rpm 5lbft down, 4500 rpm 7lbft down, 6,000 rpm 5 lbft up.
Whilst these we're being carried out I always remained realistic about the gains I'd be getting, assuming I'd get around 155 -160bhp ignoring manufactures wild claims
Todays power graph really hurts to look after the amount I've spent, does anybody know why this had possibly happened, anybody experianced the same as me...??
The mechanic today said it could be that my head has not been ported properly (I did buy this off e-bay... :()

How standardised are rolling roads? Can you get a wildly different reading between 2 different places? I am only pushing out just over 200 BHP, even though I am actually up a meusered 25 on what it was before the mods. However, a standard VR6 C is meant to be 190 BHP.
-
most rolling roads differ from other rolling roads, my brothers had up to 30 bhp difference on different rolling roads, the most accurate he knows of is owen developments in oxford

ADAM, what engine you got in yours then?

Hope you dont think I meant the cab!! That would be pretty cool though!
I've also got a Corrado VR6 Storm, with the 2.9l VR6 engine (190BHP) It's got a Ram Air induction kit, Milltek exhuast, Larger Throttle Bodies, and an AmD Remap.

The rolling road I visted today was the same one I went to back in July.
I'm debating whether or not to take it up to Stealth racing in the hope I'd getter a better reading and to see if they can make some adjustments.
I had a bit of a feeling the guy working on my car didn't fully know the best set up on a k-jet unit as he kept refering to Saab mechanical fuel injection systems hes worked on in the past.
Also he advanced the cams which gave me a little gain but when he advanced them a further 2 degrees my motor wouldn't start and he kept blaming the battery and after putting a jump on that and still not starting, went back and set the car to how it was when it last started.
-
sorry ADS,i thought you ment the cab!!bloody hell that would be one fast car! ;D

your best bet is to take it to a reputable independant garage that has a history of working on your type of engine and get them to set it up properly. it may cost a bit more but i'm sure it'll be worth it. i'm not trying to put them down but i hear stealth's rollers are always on the 'optomistic' side! so if you want a true reading, or something to brag about down the pub i'd do a bit of research first.

hmmm not good news at all
id try and get it to somebody who know's k-jet and how to set it up properly. also how to mod the warm up regulator should your fuelling need increased. might be worth putting a post on ClubGti.com asking if anybody knows anywhere local to you that can set it up correctly.
just on the ported head - i've heard horror stories about so-called polished & ported heads - u really need to be getting somebody who has a reputation for good work. i wouldnt have bought a head of ebay
-
saab 900 8v's are k-jet also ;)
-
i bet its a timing problem. thats wuite a lot of fiddling around gone on and i bet the staic timing is wrong as well which would be why it wouldnt start and casues power loss
-
must admit to being more of a Club GTI forum user and from what i have read on there, aftermarket cams are not usually recommended.
A usual way of pepping up the power is to fit another KR exhuast camshaft inplace of the inlet cam. To do this the sprocket needs modifying on the exhaust cam to fit in place.
Search on club gti for a more detailed method though ;D

Thanks for your replies.
I'm hoping it is something as simple as the timing although I have heard of horror stories about heads not being ported properly.
As for the warm up regulator mod, I did suggest this to the mechanic who took this off and drilled a hole in the cap at the back but he didn't really know what he was doing.
I was also thinking today whether the inlet could have been 'over' flowed, i.e took much taken out thus resulting in the air being forced down through it losing its 'charge' but the time it reaches the cylinders.
This all seems strange coz out on the road, she definitley feels more responsive and drivability improved (but this could be to do with the fact that I had to wait 7 weeks for the work to be done and not having driven during this time)
-
give the ignition and valve timing a check ;)
-
Veedubgti8v,
Could you pls tell me wot the difference between static and normal timing is...?? :)
veedubgti16v,
How easy is it to check the ignition and valve timing...?? i.e can I whip it into a local vw specialist and they'll be able to tell me fairly quickly...?? :-\
Cheers...!
-
static timing is making sure the crank and cam pulley are correctly positioned in relation to each other.
iginition timing. is set with the car idling using a strobe light and the markers on the fly wheel
both are v.easily checked by somebody in the know!! 15min job!
-
youd have to take the rocker cover off to see the cam marks, id check these cos they might be a chain link out, that would loose you quite a bit of power.
-
Excellent, cheers guys....!
My mechanic who put it back together is a vw specialist so I'm hoping he lined the cams up properly but when I've got some more money I'll take it to somewhere like Stealth racing and get them to take a look at it as they should be able to properly set it up as they'll have a good knowledge of my engine. :)

Has anyone read the december issue of golf+, the guy with the white cabriolet fitted a passat 2.0 litre 16v and fitted kent cams which he says gave him less power. He goes on to say that fitting KR cams from an origional 1.8 litre vw engine with a stainless system gave him 164bhp.
i cant decide on an engine swap or wether to try and squeeze extra performane from my 1.8 8v, but the more i read and hear, bad porting and cams are not great. One guy who i trust reckons a good old head skim and polishing of the head ports plus a decent exhaust system and filter gives far more useable power and for a lot less cash. This doesnt help too much cos you have spent good money, the likes of dubsport in lancashire i am sure could sort your motor but it probably wouldnt be cheap, but they do have tons of experience and a good rolling road, they may even be worth a call to see if they can point you in the right direction
