Title: Not sure if my 1.6S 98 Golf has original remote central locking
Post by: samshorty on 14 April 2010, 15:42
I have recently bought a 1998 1.6S MK4 Golf. It only came with 1 key which is just a standard key with no buttons for remote central locking. However it also came with a separate remote which doesn't appear to work. I have tried re syncing as it states to in my handbook but this does not work. I have also replaced the batteries. I was wondering how I can tell if it is original remote central locking and not after market as I have bought this flip key from ebay hoping I will  be able to program it to my car.

i dont think its a simple as just tying to restnc a key or that would make stealing the car very easy, i would have thought you would need vag com to resync or get the dealers to do it

I think all the golf come with remote locking but dont quote me on that

hi and welcome to the forum

Thanks!

According to my handbook if you have a working key you are able to resynchronize a key.

Press either the open button or close button on your radio wave key once for approx one second. the vehicle will remain locked. The control unit however recognizes a valid code
Now unlock or lock the vehicle using the key
the keybite is recognized as the valid mechanical code. a new code is defined between the key and the control unit. The synchronization procedure is complete

Also I have been to the dealer and they said it would cost £100+ for a new key, I however forgot to ask about the remote central locking. Also I know there is a transpoder which will need to be linked to the immobilser on my car. From my understanding you do this using vag tacho and vag com. Does anyone have any information on how to use these to link the key?

Thanks
