Title: about to aquire a gti
Post by: DC90 on 14 April 2010, 09:24
Hi, new tot he forum, impressed so far.

I'm about to aquire my step-dad's 1997 Mk3 Golf GTI 8V and need to insure it.

I'm 19 with a years claim free named drivers experience and 8 months of my own policy.
Held licence 2 years this June (which is when i get the keys), with a pass plus.
Totally standard and parked on a driveway and locked in a private work car park in the day.
i can add my mom and step dad as named drivers if it helps, both late 40's with 18 - 20 years of a full licence and their own policies andc ars on the side.

where do all the under 21 drivers with the same car find their insurance?

sorry to ask i'm jsut having so much trouble finding it reasonable, hopefully hopefully within the 1000 mark, no more than about 1800.

thanks

send an email to GolfGTI@hertsinsurance.com with your name and number and we'll give you a call and see what we can do for you. No guarantees i'm afraid but always worth a shot.

cheers

From my experience of insuring a GTI since I was 19 its going to be pricey.

My MK4 was with Bell and then a company called eCar (I think, bloddy hell I've got a sh!te memory) and then when I turned 21 I got my MK5 with Elephant and then Greenlight the year after.

I get my car back soon and have been doing some shopping about, If you have 2 cars in your house hold I have found I save A LOAD with Admirals multicar policy, which is who I will be using in May.

Good luck

i know its gonne be pricey. i can afford up to about 1800 2000 at a push.

I had heard about the multicar policies but wasn't sure how beneficial they were.

i did a quote wih elephant, my policy but also adding my mom and step dad as named drivers, a little over £1800 but this was as a one lump sum price, i can only afford any insurance at all if i can pay monthly.

:(

You're going to really get stung if you do pay monthly via an insurance company. Try looking at how much a bank want for a loan as opposed to using the insurace company to finance it.

Have a look at ecar. Mines on a pay as you go policy, not a gti, but when looking at gtis it was about 170 a month and you get a no claims in 8 months

Yeah, thats what I did with my MK4, I knew I was only going to have it for another 3 months so took a monthly policy with eCar and it wasnt too shabby.

what's a pay as you go policy? just pay monthly? sorry.

i know you pay a premium for monthly payments but there's no way i could raise 1700+ in one. also i have next to no credit history and it isnt good so i doubt i'd get a cost effective loan.

I found Admiral/Elephant are the best bet for your age mate,

I just turned 20 and am insuring a Mk3 GTi 16v for £1700 in my own name with my old dear as a named driver so she can wing down the motorway in it!

I also have 0 years no claims and have owned my license for about two and a half years. so £1800 sounds about right unfortunately :(

if 1800 is the best i people can find I'll have to with it. I can afford it, it's just good to know you're gettin it as cheap as pos.

Thanks for the help. Beginning to love this forum already. So much better than saxperience.

a question for Danny...

is there a list of certain mods accepted or will just a K&n etc be ok for the mod? although for the same price i can find second hand coilies.

Granted im 21, but ive just re-insured on my mk3 Golf Gti 16v for a nice sum of £565.

I have 1 years no claims and had my licence for 4yrs.  Stick as many adults on your policy as possible.  Ive got my mum and dad as named drivers on my policy.  works a charm :D

Roughly how much extra do HIC charge to pay monthly?
