Title: Golf R or Gti?
Post by: WilkoGTI on 13 April 2010, 20:19
Guys,

sorry if this has already been asked, but as the subject suggests, R or GTI?
I almost ordered my new car but came away from the dealer pondering over the R. Now, with the type of spec'd Gti I would get, it would be a few grand short of getting an R.
But I am really undecided on which one to get.

The R certainly does look sportier (I think) but what are the main differences?

If some said to you that you had to chose, what would it be?

I think most on here have already chosen.

Both fantastic cars.

What's your price range and what do need it for? You can probably answer your question yourself.

Its all down to what you want. Theres big pros and cons for each. Only you can  pick.
The R is 4wd uses more fuel, costs more to tax, costs more to service, costs more to run, has the less well known badge. But its faster, has more off the line grip, more stealth looks.

The R is just within my price range including spec's. But like someone said, I don't know if I would welcome the higher tax, paying extra for fuel.

I guess I would like it because I think they maybe far and few between although the current Gti is not too common at the moment.

As you guys say, its only me that can decide but I was just thinking on other opinions

Its all about personal preference.  As GolfTi says, most people on here have already ordered / got their cars - so will be giving a biased opinion!

For me, I chose the Golf R.  The extra road tax is like £20 a year more than the GTI - so thats not really a consideration.
The fuel is supposed to be almpost 34mpg on the R and 38mpg on the GTI... but both are probably based on driving 55mph with no traffic!  Again, not a HUGE difference, especially considering the difference between the MK5 R32 v GTI.

Remember - comparing the cost of a well specced GTI against the standard R isn't really fair.  Spec up the R to the level you want and then compare the costs.  There will probably be about £4-5k difference by the time you factor in the R already has 18" wheels and xenon lights.

Either way, both are great cars

Thanks p3eps,

Are you on the rforum at all?.

Do you mind me asking what your insurance premium is?

Yeah, I'm on the R forum.  I don't have insurance yet as the car isn't due until the weekend (I'm jumping to assumptions as it was on the boat on Saturday!!) - but the best quote I have is a little over £350 fully comp and protected NCB.  Bearing in mind I'm 32 years old with 13 years no claims discount... although I had a 'no fault' write off last year and a fault claim the year before.

Insurance isn't that dear on them!!!
I was quoted £272 fully comp.

Until the goverment start messing with the bands again and it ends up been a huge difference as they will...

34mpg   A mate has a TTS and its not doing anywere near 34mpg on the same route i do every morning and she drives smoother than me. Unlike the mk6 GTI which seems alot better on fuel than the mk5 was which suprised me.

Both are great cars but the R will be alot more to run, cambelt changes, haldex oil/filter changes, fuel, tax.

But if you have the money and the future running costs are nothing to you, then i would say probably the R would be the choice i would go for.

And im amazed at how little you guys are paying for insurance as its gone up massive twice in the past few months mines more or less doubled.

Both fabulous cars.
Very personal choice.
Drive them and decide.
The GTi fits my budget as I am a bit mean!
Also, the R has a smaller boot.

Thanks guys for your input.

I know its really down to my own preference.
I was may wondering if someone had purchased a Gti and then thought they had actually went for the R.

which ever car I decide, it will certainly be a step up from my clio campus  :embarassed:

I may spare a few minutes and get my camera out!
Like I said - I'm crossing all parts of my body in the hope that it arrives for the weekend... but knowing VW it will probably not make it!

Until the goverment start messing with the bands again and it ends up been a huge difference as they will...

Perhaps... but with it not having much higher emissions than the GTI I would think they'd both be effected in a similar way.

Both are great cars but the R will be alot more to run, cambelt changes, haldex oil/filter changes, fuel, tax.

I drive around 8000-10000 miles a year (if that!) and only keep cars for 3 years, so I'll never have to worry about the cambelt.  VW still offer the £250 fixed price servicing on the R, so technically servicing should be the same.

And im amazed at how little you guys are paying for insurance as its gone up massive twice in the past few months mines more or less doubled.

I have to say I was pretty pleased with my £350 quote.  The ones I originally got were £550-600 until I tried Adrian Flux.  Seems like a good deal to me, and they're a company I've actually heard of.  I'll need to mention the scirocconet discount code when I phone to actually order and see if they give me 15% off
Title: Re: Golf R or Gti?

I did nearly cancel my order for the GTI but that was more down to a useless dealer and a delivery time that ended up over 7 months. So i was on the brink at one point of sending a cancelling letter (I had it wrote out) and going for an instock scirocco R.

I'm far from rich!!  I just have some disposable income at the moment before I get married and start a family!!
I got £17500 for my written off ED30 and almost £4k personal injury payment.  I put my deposit down in May 2009 - so have had plenty of time to save
Hopefully its going to be worth the wait!

I bought a mk6 GTI and the only thing I could say to criticise it is that sometimes (with my remap) I feel like 4wd would be better.

Apart from that though it's your call.

One thing though that I think we can all agree on is that it is perhaps so hard to choose because both are such fantastic cars. You will not be disappointed with either.

why would anyone pay 30 grand for a 'golf'. it doesn't make sense.  remember the gti mark 5 was only 19 grand.  mark 6 is 24 grand and that seems steep.  30 grand imo is too steep.  if u ask most of these anoraks.  the r dont have the same pedigree as a gti badge does.  the r has no history, just something dreamt up recently by the vw goons.  gti is iconic.  saw a recent survey on yahoo( i think) which surveyed the most iconic motors- had gti second to aston martin db9.
evryone knows about the gti.
not many ppl are silly enough to buy a golf r.  i'd rather the ford rs because that is far superior to the golf r.

Funny but I am probably the only one who does not think there is a major difference between the Golf "R" and the Golf "GTI"...

I see the "R" as a (much) better "GTI" both top notch affordable VW sportscars who are nearly in the same league as e.g. Porsches but thank God a lot less pricey but still offering the same incredible kick.....

The price of a (sports)car is very relative... :nerd:

He seems more concerned with the image and badge than anything else.

The GTI is a great all-round fast car and you can't go wrong buying one. It's going to do 95% of what the R does 95% of the time. If you want a little more go, it is easily tunable. If you want to look good on the street you will. If you want to join several dozen 'anoraks' at an airstrip on a sunny Sunday to talk cars, you can.

If you want four wheel drive though, you'll need to buy the R. But you'll still be a part of the 'iconic' fast Golf club.

Okay here it is the big difference between a Ford and a Golf...

WHEN I LOOK AT THAT FORD RACE MONSTER......it seems to me that every item is missing that bit of extra to make it look nice and pro......

Golf GTI has exactly achieved what is missing when you look at the Ford....

I admit that (even) if driving the thing works out faster I will be thrilled.....but there is a point I will not go beyond and that is buying a Ford....

You can have any colour you like, as long as it is........................... that one chosen lately for their racing customers......sorry Henry for they are missing the point

Not true any more that phrase!! I had a focus and never had a problem with it, did 20k miles never missed a beat!! The golfs have there problems nowa days?? But hey thats what the warrenty's for!! It seems there are problems comming through on the forum now on the MK6? I know mine is runing like a dream 17,00 miles and love it!!

I have also owned a couple of Focus's and they were very reliable but rattled like hell. Fabulous suspension and steering. Low rent interiors. Unfortunately, the badge is wrong.

The R certainly does look sportier (I think) but what are the main differences?

In a nutshell :-

To drive

The GTi is lighter, more nimble and "chuckable" around the bends - slightly more fun on the twisties in the dry.

The R is (and feels) heavier, but has much better traction in all conditions, and is faster.

To buy

The R comes as standard with Xenons, 18" Alloys, LED rear lights, Front LED DRL's,  Side skirts, R suspension and upgraded brakes, plus of course a 270ps engine and AWD.

Costs

As P3eps says above there will be very little difference in running costs, but the GTi will be slightly cheaper over a year.

The key decision is whether you want the AWD, which offers superb traction in all conditions but at the cost of increased weight (& purchase cost over the GTi )

If all you do is travel up and down the motorway the R would'nt offer anything much over the GTI  IMHO.  But if you lived & drove in the Scottish Highlands, then the R would be my choice everytime

It's interesting that you also mention exclusivity. I have not seen an R on the road yet. Funnily enough I have only seen one other Mk6 GTI in 5 months of ownership.

Possibly the best way to look at it is. Ignoring cost and taking into account what car will be more suitable for your own personal circumstances...... If you go for the 'R'.... in the future would you think I wish I had went for GTI or vice versa.

I did not have that dilemma as the R wasn't available when I ordered. But I love my GTI  and I do not feel jealous of the guys who have went for an 'R' they will love their cars too.

I know a couple of the guys here are from Scotland, as I am, but I have not seen a single GTi.  And I have been looking.
I did see a nice Candy White 3dr R in Falkirk yesterday however.  Any takers?

Got to admit tho, prefer the GTi's.  Especially the twin pipes at either side of the rear.
