Title: MK6 GTI black 5dr stolen off my drive - Gutted
Post by: Tone2have on 13 April 2010, 18:21
Had it on order since Sept 09, picked it up Friday 9th April and it was gone in the early hours of Sunday morning. They entered our house (kids and us asleep upstairs) and took the keys. I am so gutted and I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this! I didn't even get a chance to get a photo of the car!

Sorry to hear...

Thats why my keys and I go to bed together. Although with young kids in the house, its probably better they just took the car and went. Items can be replaced, people can not.

Thats shocking... but like above - at least no one was hurt.
Must be gutted having it for less than 2 days.

Thanks guys for the words of support. You are all indeed correct, the most important thing is that knowone got hurt. The house wasn't trashed either.

Although it's just a car, words can't explain how much I wanted that thing and when it turned up in the "flesh", wow! I put 100 miles on it, bearly enough to even get a taste of the true potential. Hindsight is a wonderfull thing but note the words of R32UK and put your keys somewhere safe! I thought they'd be safe enough stowed away in a kitchen cupboard, obviously not!

Yes but if they want the car that badly they will come upstairs looking for the keys and someone Will get hurt , not worth it if you have little ones in the house,

Sad but true, if they went to the extent of going through your kitchen cupboards they wouldn't have throught twice about coming upstairs.  In this situation, unless you sleep with a shotgun under your pillow, they are always going to have the element of surprise and you're most likely going to get hurt.

House alarm / rottweiler FTW.

Gutted for you mate

This makes very sad reading. Very sorry to hear this, it does make my blood boil! But as already expressed, better to leave the keys downstairs so no one get hurts.

Hope the scumbags are caught quickly!

I cannot begin to imagine how horrible you must feel.
At least you and your family are safe and well.
A car can be replaced but not a life.
I really feel for all of you.
Take care.

Don't know if it's worth putting the reg no. up on here?
Or any other distinguishing features (Xenons, tyre brand etc)

It's probably re-plated or hidden away by now anyway.

Really sorry to hear of your loss,

Had a close call myself three days after I got mine last summer, someone rang at the front door, I opened it and there was nobody there - stepped out to look - no sign of anyone. Went back in to hear someone try the backdoor, ran to the back of the house and saw a lad run down the side and over the gate. I can only assume that because I took a while to get to the front door he / they must have assumed that nobody was in and tried their luck - fortunately the door was locked. Informed the police, apparently it's a well known trick and they usually work in pairs - and when they called round later and saw the car on the drive they were in little doubt as to what he might have been after.

I can recommend the alarm route, the night set option allows you to alarm the perimeter (doors / downstairs windows etc) and whilst it wont stop them getting in, you'll know when they do, if they bother. Also, the engineer that installed ours told us that the panic fob gets a quick response from the police as it's interpreted as a robbery in progress - don't know if this it true, hope it never gets used.

I'm often in the MK / A1 area so will keep a look out - have only ever seen one other black 5dr Mk6 GTI on the road in the 9 months I've had mine.

Sorry to hear this as it is so sickening.
People like that deserve a severe punishment. Preferably tied to the back of your replacement car and dragged for 5 miles. For starters!!
Hopefully you had your insurance in order.
Would be interesting to hear if it was the VW 7 day free insurance, what they say.

I'm with R32UK. Let them try taking the keys off me upstairs   I'm sure my kids would understand

I was asking my dealer about the free 7 day insurance yesterday - it doesn't cover GAP  :embarassed:
He advised me that if I wasn't taking his GAP insurance to make sure I had something else sorted before collecting.

So sorry to hear this news what scumbags, if they put as much effort into real endeavour we'd live in a much better world.

The main thing is that no one was injured or worse! although absolutely gutting you can always replace a car under insurance but you can never replace a child.

You take care of yourself and your family and the insurance will take care of the rest.

I echo all that's gone before and offer my deepest sympathies.
I don't really know what I'd do if confronted by some t*** in the middle of the night. Mine has one of those full wheel locks on so by time he'd set off the downstairs alarm, wrestled the keys off me and my cricket bat, got the lock off the wheel I think some of the neighbours would be out helping!!!
I suppose such scumbags will always get something if they really want it so I try to make it as hard as possible for him. However, this is the balancing act one has to do between negating the risk to one's family and protecting one's property.
Personally speaking, if any party comes out in this election campaign saying that in future all car thieves will get their goolies cut off they've got my vote!!!

Really, really sorry to read of your experience... I can only echo what has been said before.

I don't live that far from Bedford myself (bought my GTI from there as well) and commute daily up to Peterborough, so will keep an eye out for another black one on the road (mine isn't a 10 plate, so hopefully I won't get evil stares from other members if they see me along that route).

Thankfully, as has been said, no-one was hurt - although I can only imagine how you're feeling about all this.

Hope it doesn't take too long to sort out.

It depends how quickly its recovered.  Within a day or two it should be ok - especially when stolen with the keys.  Its likely stolen to order or for selling on - so its unlikely they'll want to damage it.

If it was stolen by joy riders, then I wouldn't want it back either!

My front and back doors are 21 bolt thick steel affairs from Germany! Very expensive but worth it. All windows also have very thick brick-proof security glass and are locked with security locks. Also, the whole house is alarmed with panic buttons. I live in a very good and safe area but these scumbags travel around to the better areas in order to steal.
Yes, it sometimes feels like Fort Knox, but I can go away with peace of mind and also sleep soundly at night.
One thing that has always surprised me is that the doors in the UK are so flimsy and can easily get kicked in. On the continent they are made of much better stuff.

Wow!!! I'm truly overwelmed by the number of supportive comments. I registered on this site prior to the golf arriving. I love reading the forums. You guys have made me realise what's truly important here and as much as it seems wrong to post this on a car forum... but it's not the car!

Thanks again guy's, can't express my complete loss but in one sense but complete thankfullness that this wasn't a more serious crime. Reg plate is KV10 VZN and to clarify it's a 5 dr in black with Zenons and shadow Monzas. It should be easy enough to spot, I've so far chased 3 up and down the A1 between St neots and Bigglesewade. Luckily for me I've got a MK5 GT 2.0TDI whilst we sort out the insurance so I easily catch the f&^&er's up. But this is like chasing ghosts. At some point I know I'm going to have to give this up.

Finally some good news, my "Golf" clubs turned up in Barnet and I got "most" of them back. However I now wonder if this is just a drop point to put the Police off the scent. God knows where they take the cars, is it already off-shore or locked up in London?? Who know's. Got to let this go at some stage but I really can't just yet, I can't get over how good that car was.

That's terrible!  I can barely imagine how you feel.  At least nobody was hurt and I hope your insurance sorts you out with adequate compensation.  I suppose it's back to the waiting list though.

You've made me realise how lucky I am.  On Sunday morning I realised the front door had been unlocked all night.  I went out to the drive and realised I'd forgotten to put the car in the garage - it was still parked outside.  With the key in the ignition!  The garage door was also open.  Nothing had been touched.

Memo to self: be more careful.

Rolfe.

My friends got their X5 and their Porsche Boxster stolen on the same night in the same way as happened to you. The trackers on the cars enabled them to be recovered. I know how much it affected the family and can only pray for your situation.

As everyone else has said it is a blessing that no one was injured. Money is nothing compared to loved ones. (although to some of us our cars count as loved ones also).

really sorry to hear of this - i'm glad nobody was hurt in this incident

what is very sad is that you've only had this car a few days, and doubly so after you have been waiting months for it. obviously a local has seen you with it and thought 'cool car' and decided to take it.

i know in my case i just want a nice car that's a nice drive and practical and safe and can fit in with the rest of my life. however sadly i think the GTI has somewhat lost that inconspicuous look and makes it attractive to theives. i just pray if somebody comes after my car they don't hurt me or any of my family

somewhat off on a tangent but i think still quite interesting, dunno whether this has been posted anywhere else (sorry if it has), stolen cars were used againsts a jewellery shop in Bradford, one was a Focus (I understand backed up into the shop to enter the premises) and then and what I assume was a mk5 GTI used as the getaway vehicle.
Nice to know the theives prefer the power of the turbo for a getaway.  :undecided:

Had my A3 2.0 TDI S Line Quattro stolen 6 months ago, first time I have ever left keys downstairs! I have a 2 year old so was a bit worried so got crime prevention out and they fitted new locks front and rear aswell as sash locks on all windows and doors all free of charge so might be worth giving them a call!

The little s*^ts better not try for the golf!

Ps. do you think the boot in the golf is big enough to hold a pair of chavs till I get them to the moors 10 miles away

Honestly I cant find the right words to say how sad this is. There are proper scum on this planet, and when they get caught I wouldnt jail them, I'd torture them. Cut off finger tips, slice into hands and feet with knives, stub out fags on their necks, keep them in a small protected box and keep feeding them everything that they wanted so that when they need to pish and sh!t they have to sit and sleep in it all day and night. Jail time is a luxury, I know cnuts with LCD tv's and PS3's in jail.

Anywho, I hope all is ok and you can start over again, dont let these lowlifes get you down.

On Sunday 11 April at approx 4.30pm thieves broke into the service workshop at Alan Day, New Southgate, and stole two Golfs.

The vehicles – one a customer vehicle, the other new stock – may be offered for sale or may be spotted by Retailer staff. They are:

Reg: VN59CFF
VIN: 1KAW153813
Golf Mk VI SE 1.6TDi
Colour: Silver
This vehicle was in the workshop to repair an unselectable 5th gear. It may appear with another Retailer or result in an order for a replacement gearbox or gearbox parts.

VIN 1KAW363135
Golf Mk VI SE 1.4 TSI
Colour: Black
This vehicle is on Dialog with registration LS10JHO but the vehicle did not yet have any number plates and still had all its white transit film.

If you receive any information on these vehicles, call Alan Day on 07776 398376 or 0208 920 4000.

I don't think the delivery situation from VW has helped matters and that's not to say for a moment that I blame VW in any way. However the MK6 GTI (and lesser models reading the last post) are obviously somewhat of a sort after car.

I'm still trying to get to grips with the fact that the car was ordered Sept 09 and took until April 10 for delivery, and within less than 2 days the car has gone.

We called the VW dealer and apparently 2 other top end cars (not VW's but within the VW family) were delivered to customers on Friday 9th April were also nicked off peoples drives!

You can jump to so many conclusions, the car could still be local or most probably now in a container going somewhere far far away. What I do know is that having driven around in the MK5 GT TDI for a few days, I will be sortin this out and no criminal is going to put me off driving the car that I wanted i.e. another GTI MK6. Just ope the insurance gets sorted soon and the lead times come down. Waitin another 8 months is going to be gut renching!

Yeah a tracker is definately the way to go, but probably a pre delivery option?

If the car's been watched i.e. delivery from the garage and/or it's an inside job, your bulk order ain't much use!

it's great you feel like this. personally though if i were in your position i would either look for a 2nd hand one or just get another car - i don't have the patience to wait 8 months, what is this? waiting for a Bentley or something? it's a friggin Golf! make some more quick! well i know it's not that simple but honestly, the wait times really are bonkers

I agree, a nearly new GTI would be the quicker option. However I think having a nearly new GTI would feel a bit like getting my nicked one back after 3 months i.e. it just wouldn't quite be the same as a having new one off the producton line.

It's in the hands of the Police and insurance now. Geees I got no hope!

This is a proper nightmare situation for anyone to have to deal with and I am really sorry for you.  One of my colleagues went through the exact same thing with a Mini Cooper, twice.  Second time he told the insurers he didnt want it back.

Just a thought-on the 7 day insurance from VW, do they not offer (as many insurance policies do), a replacement new vehicle if it is stolen and it is less than 12 months old.  Obviously a 7 day policy and a 12 month period are mutually exclusive but usually even short term policies are written on the same, or similar, wordings as full term policies.

Indeed, the 7 day policy is there to protect you for that period whilst you sort out your own insurance, why should it not cover you for this type of loss.

I'm an Insurance Claims Manager and I would be happy to review the policy for you.  My insurance has the 12 month clause and therefore GAP insurance is not required until this expires.  I didnt get the 7 day as I lease the car.

Keep safe

DJ

That's absolutaly awful mate and I really, really feel for you guys. We got burgled once a few years back, when we were out for the night and its a horrible experience. Since then we've got a decent house alarm (one where we can zone the downstairs when we go to bed at night). We live in a nice area however your story has reminded me to make sure I put the alarm on at night as I've been a bit lazy in doing that recently (especially seeing as the GTI's sitting there on the drive).

I hope it dosesn't put you off getting another GTI. I brought an ex demo GTI from a VW dealer and saved a fair few bob off the price of a new one. It had all the extras I wanted. You could consider buying an ex demo once your insurance is sorted rather than wait for VW crazy delivery times..... All the best and hope it gets sorted. M

I keep reading this 7 day insurance bit. Bettr get my ass into gear and get down the dealers ASAP!

You would av thought the police would be doin more. I've not heard from them and neither has my neighbour down the road. She apparently witnessed the buggers takin the car away. She thought it must have been me drivin when the lights flashed to open up the car.

So far I've made 2 calls to the Police this week, 1 to report the other cars from the same dealer being nicked and 2 to report some scumbags sitting in a red corsa in the town centre looking very suspect! You get a call from victim support but nothing on the progress with the investigation! Anyone reading this in Aus or the Far East (or anywhere else more exotic) , enjoy your new car when it arrives!

Oh and Victim support won't help my 7 year old son because he's too young. Well he ain't too youg to be completely traumatised by the whole event! Sleepless nights are us!

Awful news.
Happened to the GF a few years ago in Manchester. They took the keys to her 10mth old 325i sport M coupe but we found it parked up a few miles away untouched (think thieves suspected a tracker despite it nit having one).

It's worth checking with your insurane (sure you know by now anyway) but usually if you're fully comp and the car is a total loss within the first year you'll get a brand new replacement vehicle.

Did you take the 7 day free insurance? You would have had to phone them and give details of the drivers etc.

I can sympathise with you there, my 8 year old son loves my GTI more than I do, he would be gutted if it got knicked, never mind the trauma of someone entering the house while he was a sleep

These posts just keep comin and we really do appreciate your support and concern for the kids and us as a family. I would have loved to have took the kids along to and owners club meeting in the near future. Sadly that might now be the back end of summer before we can really consider ourselves as being a fully fledged member of the GTI owners club.

I've given up chasin GTI's up and down the A1 now. I did gave the police a verbal kickin today as they still haven't spoken to the only witness!!

No good on the gap insurance, we didn't take this option. I will be ordering another GTI though once the insurance is sorted out. I looked at A3 "black" last night and a couple of other's but they just ain't the same!

It seems that there just aren't that many black GTI's around which I spose is why mine got nicked, does that ring true?? All the post's I read, you guy's seem to have gone for the new black (i.e. white) or red colour option. What is it with black? There are loads of black GT/GTD's on the road. Am I missin something??

Hope you can find a black one soon.
How about covering it with film so that it looks like 'silk black'.
Mercedes are doing this now.
Just a suggestion.
Take care.

Mine's black.

The alarm went off at 4am last night. No one around but went out for a look anyway armed able to use 'reasonable force'.

All OK. On checking in the daylight it may have been the boot wasn't closed properly or maybe a cat jumping on it...

I'm sleeping with my keys from now on.

Hindsight is a wonderfull thing but you should seriously consider the tracker. I'll be takin this option next time!

Tonights going to be tough, we are all stuggling to sleep in one way or another. But for me (and I can sense from my wifes actions), we are going to find tonight particularly difficult.

I can't imagine for a minute that the scumbags who nicked my car are reading this but if they are I I'd just like to ask if they'd like to meet up any time so I can thank them close up and personal for the fear they've put into my wife and my 7 year olds sons head! Cheers you wan^^&s!

By the way, if you any of you guys are down in the A1 area and see a red MK5 GT staring and flashing you, that'll be me! Just checkin honest, can't help it - loved that car!

Really sorry to read about your loss Tone.  I'd be gutted, but thankfully your family are safe and your insurance will cover it.  It's just the time involved with getting a replacement!  Black GTI here as well...

As i'm recovering from a spinal op, my car is stuck on my drive with a cover over it, and reading this has made me very concerned.  On my old Golf's, whenever I parked up in a dodgy area, or left them for any length of time, I used to pull the Coil lead off and take the fuel pump relay out the fusebox and take them with me in my pocket.  I think I'll get my mate round to do the same on the mk6.  Anyone know what relay it might be in the fusebox of the mk6?

Not sure if my post will help or not.

Went through the same thing 5 years ago. Both cars and tv etc whilst we were asleep. More annoyed with the affect on the wife and kids - mainly kids. My eldest now 15 is still a light sleeper. Hopefully the 7 year old will soon forget. Have the alarm on every night. My wife has gone on to do some victim stuff in prisons to let offenders realise it not just property they are nicking, but affecting kids.

Hope it get better

We have had a very similar experience to you, not once but twice.

A few years ago we were about to go to Centre Parcs with the kids. Merc ML and Mark4 GTi in the garage. ML has roof box, and kids bikes in the boot, suitcases, cameras etc. Wife is breast feeding at 4am, hears the garage door and looks out the window to see the Golf reversing down the drive and then I hear the ML start up and that is gone too. There is a Land Cruiser parked at the end of my drive and it is full of blokes. They did 7 houses in the area that night. ( I live in rural Herts )They had taken the keys from downstairs. The ML had a tracker and that was found a week later in Enfield. The Golf was found in Luton 3 months later with a pound of heroine under the drivers seat, prompting another visit from the police to find out if I knew anything about that. The ML was fine but the locks had to be changed. The insurance company paid out on the Golf so I bought a Boxster. The family holiday to Centre Parcs was very stressful, we made it in the end in a hire car. No bikes, no money, no credit cards though.

3 months later my wife comes back from picking the kids up from school ( walking distance ) and the ML is gone again. This time they have broken in through the back, taken a sports bag and loaded that up with whatever would fit in. Even a bottle of champagne. This time the ML is found in Teddington. Locks changed again. I have taken the Boxster to the train station but they still take the spare keys so that has to have the locks changed ( £800 and a claim on insurance ). Second time we are hardened to it and go through the whole insurance process again.

What I can tell you is that your wife and kids will forget this over time.

Now we have an alarm with front and rear boxes, CCTV front and rear and always go through the same lock up process whenever we leave the house. Keys come upstairs at night.

But we don't take anything for granted anymore and are very suspicous of anyone we don't recognise walking up our road.

I hope it works out for you, sounds like your Golf is gone now though.

I have a DBP Mark6 GTi and it stays in the garage at night now. No tracker though as it is a company car.

Hot update, the car's been found and very local too! I guess some opportunist thug nicked it. Apparently it's done the rounds on a few burgularies! Just gotta wait now for the police and insurance to do their bit and hopefully I can get my baby back!

Pictures to follow if I get it!

Can't say I'm feeling any safer. I chased a thug up the road last night, saw him takin some charity bags off a neighbours driveway!!

Interesting to hear how many miles they put on the clock.

Out of curiosity, anyone know how someone would stand legally if they wanted to reject the car after recovering it? Especially since it was still in its running in period when taken!

I would think the law makes no differentiation between a 'older car' and a car 'in running in period' - the car is the car and as long as it physically exists and can be identified i expect it'll just be given back to the rightful owner in whatever state it is in. in fact the owner may need to go and collect it himself/herself from the vehicle pound, or pay for it to be towed, or insurance may pay for it. it would then presumably up to the insurance company to cover the costs of any checks to ensure it works the same as before and to cover the costs of any new parts or repairs.
however i'm no expert in these matters, i'm just trying to think logically.
Title: Re: MK6 GTI black 5dr stolen off my drive 11th April - Gutted

Cheers.
When I said legally I suppose I meant where they stood with the insurance company.
I know if my brand new car only a day or so old with 100 miles on the clock had been stolen and turned up a week later with several hundred miles on it and probably ragged to death in the crucial run-in period, I'd be very reluctant to have it back.
The insurance company may well make damaged parts good again but they can do nothing about "peoples theories" in running in cars.

Over to the insurance company. I'm not having the car back until they have fully checked it out. Out of interest what mileage is normally suggested for the run in period, not that it matters now! Cant imagine the thugs who nicked were drivin around like a Sunday driver!

Hi very good to hear...it seems to me that it can be also a mental boost.....

About your question:...(in the Netherlands) insurance policy state that when the car is not retrieved in say 30 days you get the amount of money to buy a new one...normally this is the best option...

In your case it is obviuosly debatable due to ordertime ....if the car is found within the period of time, but damaged,  you are only entitled to argue only about the way they solve the problems and if it is solved correctly.....

Mind you I heard from experience that if there is damage they solve it first class....including e.g. professional cleaning...

Sadly it seems that the return of the car may be a little while yet! The Pole..ee..C..ee said the car was in "good order". However upon further investigation...... it transpires that the front bumper is "scuffed" (hit something), the front alloys (shadow monza's) have been kerbed and damaged and so has the off-side tyre!

If this is what they've done to the outside/asthetics, god only knows what the engines like! I can only imagine that the inside has took a similar battering, the F^&cke$'s! This Golf GT I'm drivin is nice but not a patch on the inside of a GTI.

I gotta let the insurance do their bit now so keep the "supportive" posts comin! Thanks again for the support and can't state enough at least the damage is only to the car and not the kids!

PS if you readin Black GTI travelin across Bedford Bypass on Monday evening, yes that was me flashin at you!

Tone: Have you gone to see the condition of the car. I know it can be quite depressing, but it might be a good idea to see what has been 'done' to it.
You can then compose a detailed list of damage. If these are not fixed to your satisfaction, then you have it in 'black and white' and the possibility of you having a replacement might be more likely. What do you think?

My thoughts exactly am1w. The insurance got it picked up and they will give it a complete check over before "offering" it back. However if it's anything less than A1 mint condition then it will be a hard call as to which way to go. God the thought of waiting another 6 months though would be V gutting.

We went out yesterday in our other car (S-Max) for most of the day and upon returning home, my wife exclaimed "the rear door of the car (her Mk6 GTI) is open!!"

I then realised this had happened when I was transferring child seats over, and was in a hurry, in the morning. Hadn't realised that I had left the rear door open (opposite side to the S-Max, next to the fence) and the car unlocked  :embarassed:, on our drive ...  Oooops

Thankfully, all was intact and it hadn't rained in the 6 hours we had been away ...

The wife has left her previous car (the S-Max) unlocked with the keys in the ignition, overnight, before now  :embarassed: - however given the stories on the forum, we are being a bit more careful about car security with the GTI (apart from yesterday!)

Well here are the 1st images of the recovered GTI. It's looking pretty sorry for itselft at the moment. One of the alloys has taken a serious battering whilst the front and back bumpers both need attention. The inside looks like the scum were living in the car! The CD changer was full of ripped CD's. Worst of all is the 2K5 miles they've put on the clock. The rear pipes tell the story!! I'll post some better photos when the car finally comes back and is hopefully closer to "A1" condition!!

i'm pretty sure they'd put some fake plates on so its not on the anpr camera's.  afterall it has done 2.5k miles.  - i bet they've been up and down the uk.

mines black also- only a few weeks ago saw a black pimped out mark 4 snooping around, outside.  i'm also vigilant but my house is pretty un-private so plenty of eyes and ears.
like i said b4 ' the gti is no1 crooks choice'
black is the choice colour for crooks as its stealthy, doesn't draws as much attention as a white one. and the design of the mark 6 gti is very subtle.  practical too- well u do need enough space for your crook mates and the plasma tv.....

btw is it a 5 door?
this is going to 'f' up your gti experience.  damn car is worst than second hand.  very unfair.  i feel for ya.  mine has been thru a crash(not my fault) and i'm lucky its back to almost new.
you can get it back to nearly new but u can't turn back the mileage.

Yeah definately a new wheel. It was in the boot of the car when I went over to see it. Thanks Mr insurance man. I think it'll be new bumpers too (see rear driver side) (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1097/4604860428_e1429f387e.jpg)

Have you checked the oil level?
They can use quite a bit of oil over 2,500 miles.

The other bits can be replaced and cleaned up.
My interior looks like an Afghan village after just one wet and muddy dog walk.

Took this Golf GT 2.0D I'm driving around to the dealer for a service today. There's a new black 5 dr GTI in there and white 3 dr, Lucky buggers! So that'll be 3 or 4 black uns running round locally! Tell me they are still quite rare? I don't see many GTI's on my travels at all, let alone the black variety.
