Title: My Golf Gti 8v Anniversary
Post by: tdi_blu on 12 April 2010, 19:57
Well ive never really posted pictures up etc on here so thought I would post some up of my latest Gti.After owning in the last 18 months a 16v mk3,VR6 and a 1.8cl wagon Ive gone full circle and ended up with this little gem.Shes a 1996 8v anni covered just over 93,000 with a full service history old mots etc etc. This is only the 8v I know but she really does drive spot on and to be fair is pretty nippy round town and returns pretty good mpg which ticks all the boxes for me.Negative bits on the car usual things really small bit of bubble on the tailgate, some very light surface rust just starting middle of the drivers door and I notice some positive camber on the front wheels and the last owner decided to paint the rocker cover with none heat  resistant paint which has kinda bubbled up lol. Also the last owner fitted a de-badged grill, head light brows,K&N induction kit, removed the red pin stripe and removed all the badges on the car.Since ive owned the car ive done the following
Replaced its original badged grill
removed the headlight brows
Re fitted the grill badge and rear badge
Put a new pin stripe on it all round
Had the Camber sorted
Fitted some silver inner door pulls think thats what you would call em lol
Removed the induction kit and re fitted and drilled the airbox along with a piper-x panel filter
Fitted some nice silver dial surrouds on the clocks and fitted silver surrounds on the heater dials.

Future things to do
Paint works booked in for the end of the month sort the boot and the door
Possibly lower the car it has had a 30mm drop but still a little high up front.
Replace the rocker cover
Nice stainless steel system
Thinking of painting the inserts of the head light black
Thats about it for now im trying to keep it pretty standard but theirs always something to do  some picture before and after and any suggestions comments good or bad welcome thanks...

Thanks for your comments good and bad are always welcome  I will look into a different wheel colour at some point even though they have grown on me,but red cars with black rims have been done to death so a different colour may suit it just what colour  :undecided: The wheels can wait though for now as I want to do a few other bits first.I dont know weather to get the bit of paint work done this month which will cost £200 or buy a exhaust back box or system my budget is about £200 either second hand or new not a lot of money I know but ive got 3 kids to feed  any suggestions?? Ive found a scorpian stainless steel system with the slight up swept tail pipes but not sure if it would suit my car to be honest or maybe just a nice single bore  :undecided:

Small update had the rear quarters looked at by dent craft yesterday to remove 3 small dings. To do this I had to strip the rear of the car out so he could work his magic which he did and the car is now dent free and looking very mint both sides  While the trim was out I gave the boot and where the rear seat goes a good clean and vac out found a few pound peices too  After the cleaning session inside I decided to play with my front grill badge which I got way to much black paint on  got a new one on order but fitted the old one  still so I could see how my  red line round the badge looked still undecided about it  :undecided:.Just waiting on the new badge now and ill see if i like it still  Thanks for looking.

Picture of the red line round the badge.

Well I havent really updated my thread in a while so here goes not to much going on but hopefully car should be how I want it to look soon.Full stainless steel exhaust system has been fitted but its slightly loud so thats going shortly and Ive replaced it with a power flow system bought of here. The car has already got a 30mm drop and as ive got 3 kids dont really want to go to mad lowering it so got some front springs 50mm drop and leave the back as it is havent fitted them yet but will shortly.Bought myself some new roof bars as Im a keen fishermen will come in handy but think they look cool on the car. After ive sorted the exhaust out and lowered the car up front ive got 2x drianage plugs to have welded at the rear and then its front end ,tailgate and lower drivers door is being painted.Wheels may get a colour change have to see but wont change much more on it still want to keep it as it should be really a anniversery plus I set out to keep the car from oweing me more than £2,000 which so far im still well under. Thanks for looking all comments good or bad welcome

The loud system looks nice and its very well made but little loud for me.

I hated the red Gti in mk3 form when they were releases but between this and doms I'm hooked. Love em both. Loved the red on the badge breaking it up and the linking of the lights with black slats. Watch te roof bars for water retention if you are keeping them for a while or paint will go the same way as the bonnet bra.

Cheers Dan  its not slammed on its arse I know but still a far better look and I can always winde it down. Not to much lsft to do to it now other than paint, new set of hellas and small bit of welding required.Im going to get the wheels refurbed powder coated another colour just not sure yet what to try.I was tinking either white, gold or a gunmetal grey which is a bit to safe but im swinging towards white

Hi Blu   How you doing Buddy ??  Personally I would keep the wheels the same colour as these really make yours stand out. White would stick out like a sore thumb. If you can't get used to the red rim I would just go for completely Black Mate.

Hi Deano see you got your mk4 bud looking good  Yeah I do llike the red rim maybe textered black with a slighty thinner red line its all just ideas at the moment mate as the guy I had the car off done the wheels himself and they could do with a tidy up but thanks for your feedback mate

Im not really sure what the drop is tbh drew he phoned me and said how do you want it and advised me not to slam it as he said youll just be silly low and it wont drive as good.So I just left it to him to sort out.He reakons it will drop a touch more when it settles but Im pretty happy how it sits tbh.Rear lights were a let down guy told me that they were all red hella.Turns out he bought the car with them on and guessed they were  :undecided: as it said they were all reds in the advert when he bought the car.I personally still like them but would prefer a darker all red but for now there staying. On a plus side my red dices came and what a bargain £4 of here a nice cap called mark few pics

Post by: tdi_blu on 11 August 2010, 23:52
In a nut shell and to be as quick explaining it as I can  Someone checked my car over as I had a bad clicking noise up front.Told me to buy 2 inner cv joints and he would do the job for me.I went and bought the parts as requested but little did I know that the spares place gave me 2 outers as I didnt check them. The guy who said he would do the job let me down so I took it to another garage.I asked for certian jobs to be done and said to the guy the cv joints need doing all the parts in the boot.He carried on and removed the outer cv joints as thats the parts he had in my car.The outers turned out to be the wrong size and he rang me to see if I could pick them up and exchange for the correct size but thats when I relised that the wrong cvs had been supplied and removed of my car  So I ended up buying the inners which was what I should have had from the start lol and having the lot changed just a nightmare to be honest

Well got my rocker cover sorted bought new gasket and bolts get it fitted shortly.Went to get my roof vinyled last week had a nightmare the laquer on my roof came off and the vinyl just looked sh!t tbh so I pulled it off and my roof was a right mess  To top it all I then reversed my misses seat alabramah straight into the middle of the door which really pissed me off  Anyway this gave me the excuss to get the cars paint work finally sorted so shes gone in today for both doors to be painted, rear tailgate, rear quater as its rusty buy where the loom comes into the tailgate, hellas being re done gloss black, grill flash red and im having the roof painted gloss black  Cost me a few quid but after having all the other work ive just had done ill be keeping the car for a while now.Once shes painted only jobs left will be wheels refurbed and some minor welding and im pretty much leaving it standard looking how it should look really.Ive posted some pictures up so you can see what happens when vinyl goes wrong and a before and after really ill try get some progress pics up of the paint being done thanks again for looking

Yeah no worries mate £600.Thats the roof, lower drivers door, passanger door as it was dented, whole tailgate, bit where the loom goes into the car from the tailgate, hella head light covers and front grill.Theres a fair bit of blending to do aswell so its a pretty big job and he is a quality painter..

Few small updates havent really posted on here for a while just been enjoying trouble free motoring  Anyway as Ive moreless had all the paint work sorted on the car apart from the bonnet I managed to find a Flash red bonnet of ebay which isnt perfect but better than my old one so thats on and just needing a good polish.I also bought some more RXIIs alloys but in a metallic grey which I think suit the car pretty well few pictures

Thanks for the comments I also like the old wheels but to be honest just fancied a change. Its really now how I want the car to look I was going to put some different wheels on it and go for a better stance but Ive decided to leave it as it should be a anniversary and just try and keep it mint even though its used daily

Finally bought myself a HID kit ive gone for the 6000k with the H1 bulbs plus they have got the slim line ballast.I still dont really know to much about these HID kits but the 6k seems to be a popular choice and in terms of brightness not to much.Im gonna have ago fitting the kit myself hopeully  so once its fitted ill put a few pictures up  I also reinstalled my rear wiper yesterday for the winter at least as I just hate not being able to see out my rear window in bad weather so thats back on but Ive put the 1 series BMW arm on which Danny Monday gave me when buying me old wagon

Good stuff, the HID's are pretty simple to install, i'm sure i've read somewhere that if your running hella quads then you need to disconnect a little yellow plug that lives under the airbox. It stops the 'dip dim' or something like that! Basically stops the headlights coming on dimly with the sidelights

It may not be a problem with your lights then not too sure, it's a very simple fix if it is though

I'll keep my eyes peeled for you, you tried scouting eBay for CL's that are being broken?

Nothing to do with Hella's mate.

Basically when you put the kit in, sometimes when you just have your sidelights on the dipped beam HIDs start flickering. Pull the plug out and it goes away.

Right went and fetched these wheels today and I was pretty surprised in the condition as there not to bad at all.I dont think there spilts and theres the odd mark but not bad at all so I decided to put them on the car.My old BBS I dont think are RXIIs as Ive noticed when I had the tyres removed there 6.5" wide and an ET42 which is a different spec to my old RXIIs the red and black ones. These are ET35 and 7.5" wide and without a doubt fill my arches far better and I know it sounds mad but the car feels abit more planted lol probly just me lol.Ive got some spacers not sure what they are think there 5mm gonna put them on the rear and ive got to try and find some centre caps but not to bad for £91 they maybe not everyones cup of tea so im expecting some negativity

Not to much done really other than Ive had a complete U-turn on my wheels and put my BBS back on  ive also removed the all red rears and put the original smoked lenses on.Replaced the red pin stripe all the way round which now works far better with the darker wheels.Im going to lower the front end so it looks abit more planted up front im also going to get some red BBS centres and thats how its staying.Few pictures didnt get to do the pin stripe till later why the pictures are dark thanks for looking

Thanks for the above comments all ways nice when someone likes your car
Havent really done much in the last few weeks as im waiting on parts to arrive however I have done a few things.
Managed to find a mint set of Hella quads as my old ones were replicas and some of the fixing brackets were broken. The new ones are genuine Hellas with no damage and all there fixing brackets
I also got some lower bumper vents of bored_welsh_lad which look cool and a very cheap simple mod.
Im waiting on my new mirrors to arrive which are standard mk3 CL mirrors that are flat black not sure yet how they will look on mine but as they only cost £16 posted ill give them a try
Hopefully got hold of some Hella all Black rear lights which im told are pretty rare first time ive seen a set tbh but im sure someones already got some on here  again just sorting a price and hopefully have them by next week.I went to Halfords last week and bought myself a maguires clay kit with detailer and polish cost me £50 so ill be having a day soon to do that never used the clay bars before so should be fun.
Got the car booked in on monday for its MOT fingers crossed shouldnt be to much but you never know  either way if theres any issues ill have it done but shouldnt be to many as ive done alot to the car since owning it once thats all done see if the loves still there ill keep it if its not might be time to move on have to see thanks again for looking

Right cars had its MOT on monday needed a small patch of welding done from when some gimp jacked it up before I owned it but other than that the car was fine so thats sorted just my tax due now end of the month. My eagily awaited Hella all blacks finally came little disappionted as they have a crack in one and a scratch on the other just a shame as they look really nice on the car and ive only ever seen 2 pairs so I reakon there pretty rare could be wrong. As they have the crack dont think ill leave them on long but I have got a spare set of cl lights which im going to attempt to split the lense if im succesful I may try something with the standard smoked lights and the all blacks see how it goes  Im thinking of dropping the front end some more not sure yet as its still pretty good with speed bumps and I can get on my drive still.Next jobs is just tidy up the bay abit its pretty clean but always room for improvment. Thanks for looking few pictures of the rear lights.

Passanger side light is the all black and the other is standard gti smoked.

Nothing to big of an update sold the above Hella all blacks and couldnt belive my luck when I found a mint set which finally arrived today,so I got them fitted and they look sweet.Im hopefully putting the vento front I bought in for paint end of the month (payday) see how it looks but for what it owes me im happy to take a chance on it.Ordered some tinting film of LL for my Hellas which im looking forward to playing with that stuff lol.I had arranged for a friend of mine to come and lower the car at the front about 10 to 15mm which ive wanted to do for a while but never got round to doing it.I might have to do it next weekend as Ive got a really busy weekend plus week ahead of me so struggling for time still if I we can get it done we will.As I said nothing to big but cars slowly getting to its point now looks wise and only other major thing would be wheels but not going to bother tbh as im trying to keep it what it is a Anni.

Right I thought I would try the Vento front on today I have now decided to go vento. It all needs painting as you can see but you get the idea.Painters on holiday till friday so wount be till next week now but im going to leave it on get the headlight beam lined up and if its on the car once its painted they can line it all up as ive just bolted the bonnet on.Me and my friend are lowering the front end later get it closer to the ground up front.Still dont know weather to leave the grill its original colour as in the slats or do them matt or gloss black.Few pictures bare in mind the bonnets horrible at the moment

Just my 10 pence worth

I prefer your car just as it is/was...But then i'm never too sure on vento fronts, for some reason at certain angles they remind me of Saxo's????

I would only do it if I could keep the other front and bonnet too so I can chop and change at will.

Well I took the vento front off it was on sale but fook it gonna keep it paint it and swap at will  Im going to tint the vento lights might start preping the bonnet got 4 weeks of work now so ill have some spare time.Ive been looking a cheap wheel options im keeping my BBS but I really like Audi TT ronals for the money they can look pretty decent on a mk3.Just an idea at the moment but the vision in my head is the TT ronals red same colour as the car just a thought  or ill play it safe black or grey.Lowered the front end abit more but may go a tad lower few pictures of the front lower  anyone running TT ronals if so what tyre size you got and was any arch work required?

To run TT comps you need 205/40/17 or 195/40/17, you will struggle to run it as low due to needing more room.

Well ive been on the look out for some new rimage and ive struck a deal for some Audi TT Ronals. The wheels have had a refurb late last year in a nice satin black but they have like a red spec in the paint which I like. They have new boots all round 205,40 Kumho KU31 and look mint all being well picking them up tomorrow evening.I would like to keep my current ride height if I have to I dont mind removing some of the inner arch or lifting the coilovers slightly I think if you get them right they look really well on a mk3.Anyway the BBS are going so any takers give me a shout  I know the Ronals arent everyones cup of tea but I think for my budget there a tidy set of rims.A few piccys of them on the chaps car and the red spec in the paint thanks for looking

Right got the wheels last night and set about fitting them this morning the fronts dont really catch at all but the rears needed triming.Ive took some off the inner arche away and with 2 people in the cars fine but once the weights in the back they satrt to catch so im going to remove more tomorrow I could just raise it slightly job done but I like how it sits at the moment. In the flesh it loks really low and the wheels really suit it only draw back is the centre caps are not the right ones and dont sit flush they still look nice but my dad had a mint set of the proper center caps that fit spot on so Ive dropped them in to be painted pretty lucky really few pictures anyway ill get some better ones once its clean

Couple of small updates I wanted to brighten my clocks up abit as they were a little dull the actual bulb colour etc.Seen a post in the mk3 section where a member had replaced the bulbs with some white lcd ones and drilled 2 extra holes to allow you to fit more bulbs. This looks simple enough so I had ago and it came out really well I know others have done the better one where you solder more bulbs etc but Im pants at fiddlie things like that  Ive also bought a VW Golf flip key fob which is empty and the same key as mine but allows you to fit it to a flip style key of course I know you cant use the buttons but once Ive fitted the chip in the key will still work fine ive cheated a little bit as when I went to get it cut the chap offered to fit it all for me for £15 so Ive done that  What I will have a look at is if I can somehow get my sigma alarm circuit to fi in the new fob worth a try thanks for looking

I just opened up my spare key and you will see a small black chip towards the top of the key you just prize it out and on the new fob theres a space simlar to your old key you just put it in there simple to do.Only thing I had to do was on the new fob was like a piece of thin plastic that kinda sits over the top of the chip I had to warm a screw driver up and take some of this away so the fob shut right to as it didnt sit flush at first not hard to do mate.

This was the key I got

No major updates my flip key is working as in flipping  no buttons working but still looks better than the standard key.I also bought some new covers for my quads as the paint had reacted on my old set the new ones are look smoked when there on but there kinda clear look far better anyway.Im also on the look out for a new steering wheel I wwould like a momo 280 but as you know there not cheap Ive been watching a momo course on ebay which is pretty cheap might go for that.Hopefully summer time im having the front end painted well bonnet and wings moneys a little tight at the moment anyway a piccy of my new covers thanks for looking..

Thanks for the comments  I have trimmed the rears with the angle grinder they dont catch now unless I have weight in the back and hit a real big bump and the car bounces they just touch but thats as its low.The fronts catch on full lock but I havent touched the fronts at all and I could just rase the coilovers a touch and I would have no issues. If I was running 195 profile tyres I dont think it would catch at the front but cant really afford a new set of tyres when the ones on it are brand new.I will be removing all the arches and either rolling them or get the grinder out then stick the arches back on I would like to space them out.

Picked up my Recaro trim today it needs abit of a clean as its been sat in a garage for a while ill give it a scrub when I get chance.Front seats are really comfie and far better to sit in over my older standard seats the passanger side one needs a pull forward switch on the inside as its missing and the rear bench has a couple of marks on it so im going to have a look for another bench which is cleaner and with rear heads for now ive just left me anni back bench in im not gonna put the other one in.Just waiting on my new quads and steering wheel now be all ready for spring fest thanks for looking a few piccys

Ive decided to let the Anni seats go now I need space as ive got this trim and a Recaro sitting there which I dont need.Ive made my car how I want it like most people do and if anything ive improved it so if the car goes it will go as it is I cant really be arsed putting Anni wheels back on and trim I dont think the car will de-value because of it so it can go.Anyway momo wheel on which im now getting use to and as I had 2 recaro trims ive got the best bits out the 2 now mainly drivers seat and rear bench with head rests what I was after few piccys  Ive got to straighten the momo badge

My folks are constantly telling me to leave my car as it is because when I sell it people dont want to buy a car thats been 'messed about with', but I constantly remind them im not building the car for someone else i'm building it how I want it ... and there is a very slim chance im ever selling it! I think you made the right choice selling them mate, least you dont have to look at them now

Well I havent update my thread in a while as I havent done to much to be honest other than use the car,but what things I have done good and bad ill update the thread.First thing is ive replaced my front headlights with some none Hella smoked items which were brand new and smoked which ive been after for a while.Ive also had my 2 side windows and back screen tinted not everyones cup of tea but I like it so thats all that counts really.Had a little accident the other day using the jack out the boot which I always do before I use a trolley jack the car slipped to the side causeing the jack to damage my sill which really pissed me off big time  my fault really as the car was on loose surface so I lernt the hard way  anyway in one way its a good thing as its now pushed me to have the remaining paint work issues sorted which is the drivers wing painted due to some very small rust bubbles appearing plus stone chips and on my rear passanger quarter has a bird sh!t mark so thats being done at the cost of £250  but at least she will look her best again.I do have some more plans for this car mainly looks wise now the love is back few pictures of my new lights and the damged sill and other bits that will be painted thxs...

Well after 3 days of looking for a mk4 and debateing weather to have a 20vt or tdi I bought myself a Gt-tdi.Its the 115 bhp model done 137k with FSH 4 door I know I said im not mad on 4 doors but with the 4 kids just seemed a good choice tbh.Its in a dark grey colour which I really like not sure of the name it has the black FK type angel eyes fitted, front and rear V6 four motion splitter, miltec exhaust, rear spoiler and its had a remap not sure what its running but the chap reakons about 143bhp.It needs a few bits doing to it nothing major drivers side door stripes are coming off on the edge, stero speakers seem like there crackling and a good clean.I will be putting my TT comps on it as I think they will go well with the colour of the car and ill be getting a coilover kit for it.On the way home my dad tryed to race me and ened up being left in a cloud of smoke lol pictures to follow thanks.

I'm not really bonding with the Mk4 like I did with the Mk3, kinda regret selling the old tug boat :undecided:

However my new flat has plenty of off road parking with it so there is potential for a project car next year :lipsrsealed:

Boooo! Stick with the Mk3!!! I can understand why your after something else tbh. Done everything you want on the mk3, and without throwing silly money at it, you wont get much better in terms of looks, comfort, and performance, and you will end up throwing the money down the drain anyway. New Mk4 project it is, but I dont think you will enjoy it as much. Mk3 is the last of the real DIY cars before too many electronics etc, and specialist tools come in to play on the mk4 to make it viable.

Yes, but you might damage the paint taking it off.
Title: Re: My Golf Gti 8v Anniversary

As Wayne says I'd be very careful trying to remove it. It's obviously an after market jobby and looks to be slightly wonky(?), depending on what was used to bond it to the car paint could be damaged when you try and take it off.

That said I think that the spoilers tend to snap more often than paint gets damaged so you might be ok, use a hairdryer (a heat gun may be too hot), and some warm water. Also some nylon or even dental floss can be good to help
