Title: ARRRGGHHH RUST!!
Post by: shazz290 on 11 April 2010, 18:19
*****SORRY IF ITS IN THE WRONG PLACE PLEASE MOVE WHERE ITS SUPPOSED TO BE*****

I bought a 'P' reg Golf GTi 8V FOR £750, 4mths MOT and TAX. 107k, in purpley blue.  Totally standard. Has scratches and marks but hey its over 10 years old. Gearbox needs changing but got a free gearbox in the sa :smiley:le and exaust needs a new backbox :undecided:.

1. The car has rust especially near the door sills, the previous owner had used touch up paint but i was wondering could i get rid of it without breaking the bank( maybe scrape it off the use touch up paint?)

Also when i take off the petrol fuel filler cap theres rust not on the cap iteslf but alot where is twists in.

2. Also how do i remove the white stuff all over the engine.....limescale maybe?
3. Also theres bits of rust around the engine bay... should i spray WD-40?

Also the alloys paint is peeling off can i use normal spray paint or do i have to use a specific one?

NEED SOME HELP DONT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARS- SORRY IF IT SEEMS LIKE A LOT

And how do i get water out from fogs?

You make it sound like a bargain !!!!!!   As for the sills best not to try to touch up in my opinion. They are cheap enough to have replaced if you go to the right places. Buy the replacement sills yourself and then take them to a garage or friend to fit. The rust around the filler cap sounds like the car has been standing a while. Mine was the same when I bought it as mine had been standing for at least six months when I bought it. It will go in time. Mine has cleared up after about two good blasts with a jet wash. Give the engine a blast with a steam cleaner as well but leave it running while you do it. Rust around the engine bay is not good but try to get some pics on here so we can see how bad if anything. I would also be inclined to give it a good service in case it has been stood around. Fresh oil and new filters will make it run better as will a good throttle body clean.  Lets have some pics of the car as well.      Cheers     Deano

NEED PICS

the white on the engine is just oxydisation, spray the lot with WD40, i never use a jet wash on my engines or steam cleaners but thats just me  (my engine bay is as clean as my car)

re rust, cant comment till we see pics, the fuel cap area, is it the actual nozzle or the car thats got rust, if its the nozzle get a rag and some wd40 see if that helps

other rust areas try sand back and use KURUST, you can buy it at Halfords its very good, looks like this

I personally jet wash my engine but carefully. I.E have a good look round first, I only really do the block, air box and rocker cover etc. and keep away from any electrics etc.

Remember it gets wet when you drive over puddles. ;)

mine never has, even more so now its got full engine under cover, plus even if it did a puddle is hardly like a jet wash is it

Nah it's not but just saying water can get everywhere. ;)

When I got mine it was covered in mud.

Now it's nice and clean. It's like everything, do it carefully and it'll be fine.

I've never had a problem with a jet wash. If the dizzy cap etc is fine you will get no problem. The jet wash could get to places WD40 couldn't surely unless you are very very meticulous. If you prefer to WD40 it what's the difference. I jet wash the entire engine bay except the fuse/relay box area but I do spray around this to get the inner wings nice and clean.

dont understand what u mean deano mate, but WD40 repels water thats the difference and also drives moisture out, then leaves a film over the treated areas preventing further problems and also stop oxydisation

its each to their own if your happy jetwashing your engine then thats cool

haha not quite a bargain but it was within my budget.  Service on tuesday as the trip computer is saying one is due.  Gonna get my mate to do the throttle body.

You're worried about THAT?

F**k me, if you saw my car you'd think it should be scrapped!!

Not too bad at all. Probably 90% of Golfs around have some trouble somewhere. Yours just looks like the typical Golf for the price you paid. Mine has a scab at the bottom of one door and one tiny scab above the windscreen where they normally go. Shouldn't worry too much Buddy.      Cheers      Deano
