I was crusing home tonight pondering what can be done to the trusty (NOT rusty Sarah!) mk2's so I thought I'd add them to the list.
These mods can be done for free or for less than ?10. So here's my list so far...
1) lay the soding rear wiper flat. Cost... ?0 8)
2) single headlamp grill from CL... ?5
3) paint the calipers (not pink ;))... ?5
4) 16v beesting ariel... around ?5
5) Drill the airbox... ?0 8)
6) Uprate the headlight loom... ?10
7) Drill your discs... ?0
8) shorten your gearstick... ?0
Feel free to add your own boys and girls :)

If you shorten your gearstick, How do you get the gear knob back on top if you have cut away all the thread?
-
push a lug over the stick and force the knob on
-
Super glue ;D
-
Re thread it!
-
The most effective one is ;
Clean it
Polish it
Vac it
= Time
;D ;D ;D
-
how do you uprate the wiring loom then?
-
here u go... ;)

anyone done the headlight mod yet? i want to do it but am a bit sh!te with electrics how easy is it? oh bollocks i should just give it a go, done harder things, just being lazy!
can't think of any other cheap things? i'm sure i've done loads but my minds gone blank!
-
my gear knob bolts on with 3 grub screws so it doesn't use the thread.
-
lowering....$0
chopped springs :D
-
for the lesser golfs:
boot light,
glovebox light.
Lights on buzzer,
new badges....
Cant think of much more ??? :-\
-
on 16v's you can do the Warm Up Mod for nowt with just a few simple tools. makes your 16v far more responsive
weighted shift rod, also can be done with a lump of lead and a couple of jubilee clips
gtijoe - i got my uprated loom of RustyNuts on here for ?23 delivered.

I just threaded it down an inch more then it was in the first place and then lopped and inch off the top with the lever out of the car. Putting it back into the car is a bit of a b1tch though. lol.
-
If you remove it from the car then its easy as. Machine mart or any decent tool suppliers can provide you with the correct die to thread the gearstick.
Just take the gearstick down as a guide to make sure you get the correct pitch of thread.
And an uprated wiring loom is cheap as you like if you make it yourself.
all your doing is using the standard wiring as the switching feed for the relays, the new feed for the lights comes directly from the battery which should hopefully equal minimum voltage drop.
Also means you can higher wattage bulbs without the risk of burn outs and the backing shells for the lights are metal so they dont melt with the extra heat.
-
and if your lazy you dont even got to solder it!

but like i said i'm lazy and a bit sh!te with electrics. i'm sure its not beyond my skills but i can't be arsed to go and find the components and sit down and do it. mind you i could do it indoors and its too cold to do anything outside on my car!
-
Yeah i used to make them, but now i can't be arsed as its quite labour intensive to do loads back to back. So it probably makes me a lazy bugger but i am open to give advise if needed.
