Title: 2.0 8v tuning?
Post by: smitty12 on 10 April 2010, 17:12
How do you get more out or a 2.0L 8V engine? Ive got the MK4 2.slow and wondered if any of you knew a few tricks with the old 8Valve engine? At the moment im just running a PiperX panel filter and will soon be getting DSG pipes

any info would be great

Not sure with the MK4 engine but Khare has a cam in his 8v. Made 138(?)BHP and a nice torque figure.

A good service would benefit it.

£179 is what I paid for my cam dude, so £170 is a good price (depending on spec of the cam, mine is 285).
As Adam said, made 138hp and 137 ft-lb.

oh and drilling and de-restricting the air box makes a pretty big difference too in these engines. Not have a 4-2-1 manifold on mine but they do make quite a big difference too, although the standard mk3 manifolds are pretty unrestricted from factory.

I've got a 2E engine I'm gonna completely strip and re-build, been doin some digging to get the most out of the engine
Modded air box 1-3 BHP
Ported and polished Throttle body 1-3 BHP
Ported, polished and skimmed Cylinder head 4-5 BHP
Ported and Polished Inlet and Outlet mainifolds (To suit head) 2-3 BHP
Performance cam 8-12 BHP Although Khare's has given him a bit more
Up-rated and lightened cambelt pulley's 2-5 BHP and better response
Lightened flywheel better throttle response
New chip 7-12 BHP???? This is to be confirmed, there is much debate on whether these 'performance' chips actually do anything at all, I guess time will tell cos I already got one to put in ha ha
To actually pay for all this work doing your probably looking at around £600-£800!!!!!!!!
Seems like a hell of a lot of money to throw at a car to POSSIBLY make nearly as rapid as its 16v big brother.
Apart from buying the cam and the chip all the other work I'm doing myself so its not too bad for me.

No point in modding an 8v unless you are hitting it hard like khare and ben since you will see relatively no gains!

To be fair the higher spec models arent even that much more expensive at all!
Would go with Wayne on the turbo option

And don't say "its because if insurance i've gone for the 8v" because declaring mods will Increase your premium ten fold!!

I dont want a 1.8t. My reason for that is my car is a MK4 colour concept, i dont want massive gains from the engine anyways just a litle bit more poke and response

I think i will drill the airbox if you can get some pics up and i may look into cams. If i wanted good gains i could supercharge but again VERY expensive for the performance gain. At the very best i think you could get 200bhp out of the engine then from there components will fail and NOS will be in order lol

Lightened Flywheel, ported TB and modded airbox will give you some good gains in responsiveness and for not a lot of pennies.

Actually I probably spent 2 or 3 hours overall on my air box.

this WAS it

But then I modified it even further by cutting out sections rather than drilling holes. I've also put a big cold air feed on it, goes from the front lower bumper air intake to the front of the airbox. I'll get pics up tomorrow.
