Hi, and No, I know it’s not a GTi but hopefully someone here can help me before I set fire to the damn thing.
The car:
1997 1.6 Golf GL Auto. AFT engine code. Had stood for some time but started and ran well with battery recharged.
The problem:
Slight misfire due to dodgy plug leads. Changed leads, plugs, Dizzy and R/arm. Attempted to fire then cut out. Inspection showed that R/arm had disintegrated. New R/arm fitted but engine refused even to attempt to fire. Inspection showed no output from coil but coil receiving voltage. Replaced coil with new unit. Still refusing to fire.
The car had two incidents prior to replacing parts where the ignition switch wouldn’t turn over engine but started after a few attempts and ran as well as ever. One occasion where engine stalled at junction and wouldn’t restart for a few minutes. This suggests another pre existing problem but what?
Question:
Has the disintegrated R/arm caused some sort of electrical problem ’upstream’ from the coil? Could the immobiliser - standard factory fitted - be causing problem? If so how do I bypass it?
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to try next? All suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

set it on fire and get a gti

Obtain a schematic and voltmeter, then check the wiring harness; starting at the coil and working back to the power source. You will definitely find the problem, then.

The sensible option. Looks like that's the way to go.
