Title: Noise Diagnosis (with video)
Post by: andrewparker on 09 April 2010, 13:34
Hi guys, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what this noise is, before I take my car down to the local VW garage.

It has became quite persistent over the last few weeks. In the video the car's engine is up to temperature having been driven approximately 10 miles in 30 - 40mph traffic. The car is an 06 GTi, and has covered nearly 32K miles.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

That is your cambelt tensioner. Common fault

This. Good news is as it's roughly 4 years old it's about time it was done, cambelt + tensioner, so not too much of an inconvenience.

Is it the high pitched cheeep/ chirping noise you're concerned about?

Let us know of it fixes and maybe post an 'after' video?

Be good for anyone with this fault to present to a useless stealer as evidence to get it done, either in or out of warranty.

Yes, it's the high pitched squeaking noise that is worrying. It's certainly not ordinary.

I'll post a before and after video when the repair has been done.

Make sure they do the cambelt, tensioner AND water pump replacements at the same time!

I presume the cambelt tensioner would be done as part of a normal cambelt replacement?

The waterpump would be an additional cost?

This is what it is booked in for - http://www.sytner.co.uk/volkswagen/leeds/aftersales/aftersales-offers/cambeltofferall.aspx (http://www.sytner.co.uk/volkswagen/leeds/aftersales/aftersales-offers/cambeltofferall.aspx)

You'd have to ask. It is the tensioner that squeals.

No one has mentioned that most alternator pulleys are free wheeling nowa days and from the video the aux belt looks to be flapping around alot im going to have a stab in the dark and say its that
The weather gets into it and they seize up causeing that squeaking noise.

as above sounds just like mine did when the pulley seized.
does the noise get worse when the AC is on or when the steering wheel is turned

Is that the aux belt? Because that is exactly where the sound is coming from.

I haven't noticed it get worse when the AC is on but I'll try it tomorrow.

So is the fix to replace the tensioner and belt?

YES!!!!!

Cambelt and Tensioner must be replaced!!

The cambelt tensioner is right next to your Photo. The aux belt is Not the Cam belt, its behind it

Do not replace Aux belt. Its ISNT that. Me and several others have had same issue, all cured with cambelt and Tensioner replaced under Warranty!!

Im not saying dont get the cambelt done as thats what the noise proberly is. But the alternator pulleys arnt a un common thing to go wrong so dont be suprised if you get the cambelt and that done and it might still be makeing the noise.
lets us know what it turns out to be.

The VW Technician did think at first that it might be the alternator belt (as did a few other people who looked at the car), but I got the car back today with a new cam belt, tensioner and water pump, and it is squeak free.
