Changing the grille for one from a standard Golf:

I guess the red lines are a big visual marker for the GTI...

Doesnt actually look that bad, but the GTI one is nicer IMO.
Bare in mind that car is also dropped and sitting on different wheels. Put that grille on a standard GTI and I think it would look cack.
-
Certainly gives it a stealth look. I prefer the GTi one though
-
If you cover up the 'good bits' on the photo with your hands, the grill looks as if it came from a bog standard TDI.

Ermmmm I might have lost the sarcasm through interweb translation but, It does from from a standard TDI lol . . .

Not for me thanks

Doesn't the R grill just look the same?

Same thing I think - but thankfully VW had the sense to re-design the dull GTI front bumper and come up with something a bit more interesting and less black for the R.

The R grille is similar, but with wider gaps and thinner slats. And of course it goes faster

Takes away some of the special appeal of the GTI, nowhere near as good as the original. VW spend millions on research to get the "look", you won't better it by adding or removing bits.
Sorry, just my humble opinion. :nerd:

So any modded car with diffrent wheels etc looks worse?
Its all a matter of opinion.

I think so. Don't think there are any better wheels than that of the 18" Monza'a and haven't seen anything on the market that will better the standard MKVI. No cosmetic changes for me I'm afraid

Yes AlanD, it is a matter of taste/opinion to some extent, but overall you will not improve the look of a MK6 GTI by adding different wheels or modding by fitting a different grille etc. If you want your GTI to look like a boy racer car then fine, do the mods.

In other words just follow the sheep and be like every other GTI on the road?
Hats off to those that want to be different is what I say

if my opinion is worth anything around here, i don't think it looks that bad, it just looks like a normal Golf, the normal car looks reasonably pleasing. and it has that 'stealth' look that won't attract attention as much.
and it's your own car, you should just do what you want to do it. Does the opinion of others really matter that much? it's like if you asked me if a girl you fancied looked hot. to me the girl might look like a complete bag and i would say you should avoid her like the plague. But you might really fancy the girl and ignore my opinion and ask her for a date anyway, and you might have a really good relationship with her.

unfortunately your opinion isn't worth anything around here! but i agree with you anyway.

On a slightly different point, I saw my first R in the flesh yesterday. A silver one.
I've been a critic on here so far of the R but I have to say this looked absolutely beautiful. The owner was in the garden while I pulled up in the GTi having a nosy and he must have felt very proud because it was just gorgeous.
Still not worth £30k though!!!!!!!
