Title: Is DSG Heavier Than Manual ?
Post by: Captain Sensible on 05 April 2010, 18:55
Was watching an old Fifth Gear programme on Discovery today. They took two identical Porsche boxters except for DSG v Manual gearboxes to a racing circuit to see what was the fastest using the same driver.
The manual was the clear winner manly because the DSG added 35kg more weight over the manual. I take it the VW DSG must add weight also ?
It also said that a Golf R will have the GTI licked in a straight line. But put both onto a twisty B road and the GTI  will win as it's lighter and far more nimble going round the corners.
Found it quite interesting.

Yes... DSG is heavier than Manual.  Not much in it, but a few kgs.
Check out vw.co.uk and look at the specs - it will tell you the weights.

The Golf R is a fair bit heavier due to the haldex / rear diff - although some magazines say it will be quicker than the GTI round twisty roads as it has more grip... especially in the wet.
If it was an old Fifth Gear, how come they had the Golf R?

5th gear did a Audi TT Manual V S tronic and the S tronic was .2 of a second quicker around the track.

Porsche one was the PDK gearbox which is different to the dsg unit.

Without a doubt it will be a fair bit quicker!! the R32 was about 3sec's quicker than GTI round the TG track, and about 2sec's quicker than the ed30

If you have a nice petite arse like mine its fine, but if you have one full of lard like half the fatties on here then sit your arse in a DSG ? It'd be like driving a tank.

Yes I think it's this one :-

With regard to R vs GTi on a track, there are some lap times here on a twisty Inta track (Golf R - 19th and Mk 6 GTI - 33rd) :-

and here (Golf R - 155th  and Mk 6 GTi - 284th )  :-

The R also beats the Focus RS in a number of track tests so I reckon R32UK is right

It certainly feels more of a track car to drive than the R32
