Title: Major Problems - Need Help Asap!
Post by: Mk6Maniac on 04 April 2010, 22:33
Hi All

So me and my girlfriend were driving to Tonbridge and were discussing how amazing the mk6 has been since we got it. How it's easily the best car we've driven, is so stable, reliable etc etc etc

AND THEN...

I pulled into a service station and whilst I sat with the engine running I got the flat tyre sign come up as well as 'ESP Fault' or similar wording and associated symbol.

Thinking this was odd I turned the car off and on again, it seemed to work so I ignored it and carried on driving.

On my way home the speedometer and rev counter hit zero and wouldn't move, the petrol meter moved up and down at random and every light came on!!!

I had warning lights for esp, airbag, handbrake, exhaust, tyre pressure and a red steering wheel (?), basically the car was going mental. But importantly, driving fine.

I got it home, turned off the engine, restarted it and it stalled and lost power. This happened loads so I called the RAC.

The RAC man came out a few hours later and thought it was an earthing problem so he disconnected the battery, delved inside the car, played with some connections but mainly couldn't find any problems.

He put the battery back in and same problem - all lights came on and this time I had a message saying 'Driver System Assistant Button Defective'????

Again, it just stalled afer about 3 seconds and stopped.

Then he volt dropped from the battery to the alternator and it started ok. Everything has returned to normal but the RAC man said it is pretty weird and that I should take the car to the dealers. He says that what he did wouldn't fix the problem. He reckons it is still an earthing issue but VW support weren't available on the phone during my call out.

Problem is, I'm meant to be going on a driving trip tomorrow and don't know whether I can trust the car.

Anyone come across anything similar? I've only done 7k miles and had the car since September.

Sorry for the extensive narrative, just trying to give as much info as possible!

Thanks all

Paul

Just a guess but an anomaly with the electronics?
I've had similar glitches happen on other cars I've owned with no explanation or return of the symptoms.

Can you not stop off at a VW dealer along the route on your driving trip tomorrow?

Yeah bloody annoying. The RAC bloke just didn't have a clue and he didn't have anyone to help him!!!

I planned on taking it to the garage today but now I can't even get the engine running.

What a joke. I literally jinxed it by talking about how brilliant it is.

Now I'm using trains. Sad day.!!!

No sh!t Sherlock!!

If it were me I'd be playing merry hell with VW about it right now.

Hope you get it sorted for your road trip.

Hurdy do you work at Autorads in sheffield by any chance? Or are the 2 mechanics that work there on these forums? Apparently they both have 350+ bhp golfs a MKV and a MKVI

Well he did want suggestions

But its obviously not, now that it has reoccurred and is a permanent problem, which goes with the rest of my post suggesting it might never reappear.

Heard of a Similar problem to this were the dash instruments throw a wobbly and unable to start, this was down to a faulty battery incorrect voltage output system then goes into power management mode. Did your RAC man do a full battery check?? they i Know have gadgets that can tell you the condition of all cells on battery you may have a Duff cell or Two.

Sorry to hear about your bad news there, fella. It may be a blessing in disguise that it went mad whilst still on your drive rather than miles from no-where I guess..

Hope it gets sorted out asap and you get back to enjoying your car again

As a matter of interest was it raining ?,check that no water is getting into the fuses, the plastic cover on the mk5 was a bit iffy.

Sorry to hear of your problems ....it sounds a bit similar to a problem I had on my first Mk V Gti

Mine turned out to be a faulty "entry contol unit"

The symptoms were that the car would start briefly and then immediately die, repeatedly.  A lot of the dash lights came on and all sorts of weird goings on with warning lights etc.   The RAC could'nt get start it and could'nt diagnose it through VAGcom (apparently that did'nt work either due to the fault).  The car was put on a trailer (it was DSG) & towed to my dealer who replaced the entry control unit under warranty.

The car did'nt put a foot wrong after that

Hope you get it sorted quickly and back driving

At the vw dealer now who can't look at it for 5 days apparently, great!

simonpolly - no it wasnt raining at all, clear day

GTD-Smurf - yeah RAC checked the battery a few times, removed, re-inserted etc.

JonnyG - That is exactly the problems I have, pretty much identical. The RAC reckon the ecu is the problem or it might be the key system/car not recognising the key.

Gonna chase up VW again tomorrow otherwise the car will never come back!!! It's been a joke so far but it sounds exactly like JonnyG's problem so that's promising!

Cheers

That's what the RAC thought mine was at first and they asked me to try the other key (to no avail)

It may be an ECU problem, but I think there is also a seperate entry / start up control unit which used to be on the passenger side in the Mk V.

Like you I had to wait a few days while mine went to the dealer to diagnose   You should get a courtesy car though ?

Ooooh this brings back memories

Just found my old thread on my problems  :-

http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/vw-golf-gti-forum/66994-new-car-broken-down-advice-needed-please.html

Might actually be called the "Convenience" or "Gateway" control unit

Good luck with yours Mk6maniac ... I'm sure you'll be back in it very soon  .. it does sound very similar to what I had.

I have to say that apart from that one fault the car was perfect the rest of the time

Ok so it turns out some of the earthing points were badly corroded!

VW are looking into it and I should have it back by the end of the week!

2 weeks off the road, it's a well missed car!!!

You have 'bad corrossion' after 7 months of owning the car.  Thats a tad disturbing!

I hope he does not garage a damp car!
Title: Re: Major Problems - Need Help Asap!
Post by: Mk6Maniac on 14 April 2010, 12:31
Yep, tell em about it, that's why VW are very worried. They've pretty much fixed the problem but they want the car for longer to try and investigate why it has corrosion that early in its life!

I don't garage my car, I would like to but I assumed having a new car would mean I could leave it in a monsoon and it would be Ok. Maybe I'm wrong?!

Ok well it looks like there's leaking in the body work somewhere and that has caused the corrosion.

I called today, 2.5 weeks after it went in (!!!) and they are in the process of removing the windscreen!!!

I'm fairly new to this but it seems this is a serious issue?!?!?

So sorry to hear of your problems.
These seem to be build quality issues.
Removing the windscreen? Seems a bit drastic.
7 months is not a long time to have a car. I'd be pretty peeved off.
Have you thought of rejecting the car?
Title: Re: Major Problems - Need Help Asap!

Yeah I might have to look into this. The car has been brilliant but if it's fundamentally defective, would I have a case for a replacement?

No.

1) It's 7 months old

2) VW are trying to recitfy the fault.

If the car continues to be useless from this point onwards you may have a case but not as much as if the car was like this from delivery.

Yeah I thought so. I'll try my best and kick up as much fuss as possible though as the electrics completely failed whilst my family were in the car doing 70mph on the M25!!!

I didn't realise at the time how serious that could have been. The garage seem to be quite concerned and won't give me the car back until they're 100% satisfied as to what the problem is, where the problem is, how it happened etc.

^^  Irritating and unsatisfying as the situation is, at least your dealer is taking it seriously.  A lot of them wouldn't ...
Removing the windscreen isn't that drastic, autoglass do it all the time at the side of the road ...

Ok well to wrap this up, I got the car back this morning (albeit in a complete dirty mess state with marks where they removed the windscreen, plastic cap missing from the front bumper etc) and the description was:

'Rectify leak from OS 'A' piller. Replace main ECU.'

It took them over 3 weeks to identify, fix and give me my car back.

One quick question, if they replace the ECU, would it send all settings back to default? ie. Mobile phone pairing etc?

Only reason I ask, the car system seems to have all the same settings and my phone is still installed on it.

I know nothing about car compueter systems but would have thought this would have been the case.

Hey ho...

Your ECU is for the engine side of things

mobile phone settings etc I would have thought are stored locally witihn your headunit

Stuff like mileage is also stored with the dash clocks themselves

for what its worth, i had my ECU replaced after the fault appeared within 5 days of ownership. this was diagnosed around dec 20th and the part (in demand for new builds) was shipped into uk and fitted beginning of jan time. i was able to drive the car fine, just had the ESP fault light on half the time. no problems since, touch wood!

hope things stay good for you mate!
