Title: I hate to say it but...
Post by: kdiz on 04 April 2010, 18:13
I think people are right when they say I needed a sub.

Got a new headunit in my mk2 the alpine ida-x305 [for iphone], fitted some good front speakers made by focal £120~, but as I wanted to get some speakers that would fit in the stock holders in the back of the car my options were limited, think they are a weird size like 6x4.

I could only find about 6 speakers that were made in that size so I went for the most expensive set which was made by alpine and only £30. My god they suck so much, I have to keep the bass on 0 even though the focals can handle it at 7 just because the backs start really giving up. I have even shifted the sound to 70% to the front as even on bass level 0 the backs still mess up.

Think my best option now would be to get a sub and an amp then keeping my setup as it is but the Bass would be handled by the sub only.

I dont really like the idea of cutting the parcel shelf for 6x9s, Is the above the best aproach to solve this problem?

Sounds like you already have the answer! Good head unit, great front speakers, amp and sub next!

either replace the back speekers or get a sub and amp. personally i would get something like a 10 " sub and replace the back speekers too just to give you the best sound :)

Remove your rear speakers they are not needed and will just drag the soundstage back away from in front of you.

This is where you want it (in front of you) and not behind you.  When you go to a concert you don't face away from the band and listen to them from behind you!

A decent 10 inch sub in a secure and sealed box will provide plenty of punchy and solid bass in a car the size of a Golf.

Make sure the amp has plenty of power to drive it hard.  In my experience a more powerfull amp sounds better even if you never push it to its limit.  A small amp working hard will lack any depth and power in the sound.

I suspect the Alpine head unit will allow you to cap the cabin speakers to limit the amount of low bass going to them so they sound crisper and clearer and dont struggle.

I suggest 80htz but others prefer a higher crossover point around 120htz.
