Title: Just blown my head gasket ! Or have i ?
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 19 November 2004, 08:51
On my way to work this morning my heater just got cold half way there ... strange I thought ????

It was fecking cold, so I stopped to have a peak under the bonnet for anything fooked. Sure enough there's mayo pouring out the expansion bottle - FECK !

Checked the dipstick etc and no trace of mayo, also none in the rocker assembly ?... but all the coolant pipes are full with it. I'm pretty sure it's the head gasket unless there's any other points on a golf that could cause this type of contamination ?

Either way not what I needed just before Christmas - Not a happy bunny ! ?:'(

Ohh hell yeah - It's gotta be done properly !

Get the face skimmed in case it's warped / pressure tested and decoked.

Shame I've not got more free cash and it's the ideal time to add a cam ... still got fecking christmas and a holiday to pay for ! Plus I've now got to use the fecking trains to get to work too ...

Still, I love her too much to get upset about it - and thank god I noticed before any major damage was done. I bet I didn't have enough anti freeze in there and that's caused it as it was the first day I'd started her with it around freezing.

whats to say it aint the oil cooler that has simply gone on it?

if it goes, it will let oil into the water but not vice versa as the oil is under higher pressure than the water

Well how can I test / tell if that's the case ?

There's no contamination of the oil on the dip stick etc as I said - so it's possible!

get a compression test done - thats the only guarantee'd way u'll know if its the head gasket or not

if it aint the headgasket then get another oil cooler and put it on

Sorry I'm being very slow today ... is the oil cooler the section that the oil filter connects too ???

Just gone and checked it out seeing as it's been standing still since this morning and Gambit might be right ...

There's little oil left in the system and it appears to have all been punted in to the coolant system. There no obvious contamination, and I would not have expected the oil level to decrease if the gasket had gone between and oil / coolant gallery.

I'll try and get a compression test done too, but she's still running perfectly on all 4 cylinders, plus if the seal has gone between the oil and cololant should the cylinder compression be ok?

Might be a good time to move this to the garage section mods ??

Are oil coolers something that do 'go' then? I've never heard this mentioned before that's all ..

yes they eventually 'go', its only a thin piece of metal seperating the water n oil, so doesnt take long to rust thru

just pull the water pipes of the oil cooler and you'll see the amount of sh!te & rust lying in it

Well once i've got all the heinz salad cream out of it !

Over the weekend i'll take the cooler off and clean it up checking for damage - hopefully it'll be nice an obvious!

Cheers for your input guys !! :)

As said above those symptoms could be EITHER the Oil Cooler or Head Gasket, when the HG went on my G40 that is exactly the same as what has happened to your car, including the loss of oil. The pressure of the oil forces the oil into the water without allowing the water to go the other way. I knew it was the HG though as G40s dont have an oil cooler.

Either way, you better familiarise yourself with coolant system flushing, coz you're going to be doing quite a bit of that in the near future. That mayo'd oil sticks like sh1t to a blanket.

For the people who were following this thread ....

Turned out to be I popped the oil cooler not the head gasket THANK GOD !!

Ended up paying a local guy (who's the fecking nuts btw) as it was gonna take ages (let alone the mess it would make) to flush the cooling system out.

?150 all in all with genuine VW bits, so I'm well pleased  ;D

I just had exactly the same problem with mine. It to turned out to be the oil cooler. Flushed the cooling system but kept on getting cream sludge in expansion tank for a week or two after. Sorted now though just
