Title: measuring steering wheel spline?

Am I right in thinking mk2s had big and small steering wheel splines? How would I go about measuring the spline? Would I have to take the big nut in the middle off?

I think cars before 89 had small splines and after 89 had large splines,I'm sure this will be confirmed or not shortly  :smiley:
