Title: Instrument Lights inoperative in 'Auto Light Mode' in daylight. Please help!
Post by: am1w on 01 April 2010, 13:21
I cannot understand why this is happening. It has happened twice and it is quite annoying as it is difficult to read the speedometer. The MF Display remains lit all the time.
Can anyone help, please?
This happens when the lights are set to the Auto function. When the the beams come on due to the dusk sensor activating them, the dasboard lights come on. However, during normal daylight and with the lights set to Auto function, the dashboard lights up only when the beam is automatically activated.
My question is this: how can I have the dashboard lights on all of the time when the lights are set to Auto?

One of the real pleasures of being lucky enough to have a new car is spending a quiet hour or two reading the manual.

Unfortunately, I have not been very studious.
This time I am going to try and go through the manual like a dose of salts!
But - please - answer my question - just for now.
Is it normal for this to happen to the dashboard lights?
Happy Easter.

Aren't the dials supposed to be lit all the time?
Or do you mean the little red lights behind the buttons on the rest of the dash?

Thank you Snoops.

The size of the VW bible was quite daunting.
I have spent so much time checking the physical bits and pieces on the car, there has been little or no time to read the damn thing.

I must agree with you about the cost cutting with the paintwork. It seems, that certain colours show this more than others. It was a bit shocking when I saw my boot floor was a light red, no pink, in colour. I am also disappointed and annoyed. It seems there is nothing we can do as VW (Vicious Wagen) have got us over a barrel to put it mildly.

It is the dials and radio that are not lit most of the time during daylight hours when the lights are set to Auto.
Snoopy has the same problem.
It is bloody annoying.

Mine's an early build so may be a bit different then. Not driven the car for about a month so can't really remember!
I'm sure my dials are lit all the time, maybe it's just the needles. I tend to drive on sidelights much of the time anyway as the DRLs look horrible.

I agree about the DRLs,  quite easy to switch them off.

With the side lights on the dials and radio are lit. Fine.
It is only in Auto mode that this has started happening!.

You might 'agree' about the DRLs, but you have been of no help and unnecessarily sarcastic.

Quite normal - German Engineering. The lighting system is supposed to work like that.

I shouldn't laugh...........but I can't help it!

Wonder if Tiger tanks had their paint jobs finished properly? Maybe only up to the mk6 version!

Sounds like you just have an over sensitive light sensor (a female light sensor?)

Unless they are set like mine and so the way you normaly switch them off does not work.

I wouldn't have been amused standing next to a grown man with wet trousers either. Hope you didn't let him sit in the car afterwards?

As I am not into 'golden showers,' I was not interested and did not check the state of his being!.
Anyway, he was wearing a dark blue suit.
I certainly did not let him into my new sanctuary, especilly as he is a BMW man!

I am normally very helpful, but I also think if you buy a brand new car for circa £25k then you should spend just a little time reading the excellent manual VW have produced. I think sometimes sarcasm is very necessary.

All i know is when you go into a Multi storey carpark and you have the lights switched off the dials dim and the red pointers stay lit, it looks pretty cool.To be honest i`m way to busy to study or worry about the operation of the lights in the various positions

I think you may have confused me.
Is this not how they are suppose to work?  :undecided:
No instrument lights when its daylight as its light. When it sensors the dark, ie tunnel then it switches them on.  :undecided:
What your asking is how can you have them on all the time. Im sure this will be a setting using VAGcom or a dealer to set it. As i have had VWgroup cars in the past were the instrument lights are on all the time.

Yes, that is right and only then do the instrument lights come on.
However, it is not always easy to read the instruments when in 'head light auto mode' and when the sensor has not switched on the lights due to the dark light levels outside.
This is quite a hopeless situation and I will have to go to VW and have my instrument lights switched on all of the time.

PS: What is so weird is that all was well until 2 days ago when this problem did not exist!
