Title: turbo problem??
Post by: davetec-s on 31 March 2010, 12:21
i got a aum, had a revo map about 3 months ago aint had a problem, been perfect. was driving home last night, drove about 3 miles fine, got on a duel caariageway an a sh!tty c2 tried to race me lol so anyway i was in 5th doin about 60 so i put my foot down an was waiting for the 3000rev boost to come an it didn.....then the cel light was just flashin an the car shuddered but the cel light didn stay on just flashed about 9 times. pulled over to check, sounded sweet, reved up fine passed 3000, no cel light, job done. pulled off, drove fine, smooth as u like, as soon as u put ur foot down an it reaches 3000revs where the boost really starts to come in it just like shudders and doesn really go anywhere, not really an audible shudder but i can feel the car shake an nothing happens. not right, i know!!!lol so i just nursed it home, got it up on the axle stands just now an have had a look at everything an took all the airbox off an dv an got underneath to look at the turbo an all looks fine. any ideas? cheers

first off ideally would be to get it on vag-com and check for any fault codes
Title: Re: turbo problem?? gotten worse, posibble fuel fault?
Post by: davetec-s on 01 April 2010, 12:44
not thinkin its a turbo problem anymore, its just got worse and it even juddering on tick over and wont rev for sh!te. ive always noticed a weird noise from my fuel pump when its low, kinda like a scratchin noise every 4-5 seconds. the car seems like its hunting but it aint missing so im thinking some sort of fuel problem?

As has already been said, as the light came on chances are its logged a fault code which will point you in the right direction as to were the problem is.

true. im gonna have to pop down my local tuning place tomorrow if a can friggin get it there. it could actually be the coil pack rhyso, i remember when it went on my last car. u can tell when the coil pack goes tho, its even sounds different, subaru style :) lol but it doesnt sound bad, hope its summin simple. the boys will sort it. maybe just a crank sensor or something!?

Coil pack?

Yep. Pull the plug to each coil at a time with the engine idling and replace the one that doesn't make the engine any rougher when removed. Use a gen VW one. You might find that when you take the engine cover one of the coils has popped up and just needs pushing back down (a sign that the spark plug needs to come out, thread cleaned and screwed back in tight).

If all four of the coils seem fine then pull the plug on the maf at idle to see if it the revs settle. Do the coils first though - no need to go leaving maf fault codes in your ecu if not needed.

yesterday i took it all apart an still no difference, ive heard about them poppin up so i pushed them all back down anyway and ive had a new maf just before christmas coz i had an induction kit which screwed it up so i replaced it with a genuine vw (£80) had a full service like 4 months ago too where i had all new spark plugs and everything checked. are we sayin then its the coil pack because the plugs are fine and the bits that click on top are pushed down fine and the maf is new?

did you try unplugging one at a time with the engine running?

if it was turbo i'd have thought you'd see plenty of smoke

just the loom plug will do yes.. less chance of a jolt that way
Title: Re: turbo problem??
Post by: davetec-s on 01 April 2010, 14:11
right, i take 3 of them off an no change yet i take one of them off an it gets even worse so im guessin that one is down? i only unclipped the wiring as u said

there should be no change when you unplug the dead one..

3 dead coils would be unlucky

sorry if i was unclear, its runnin lumpy like its missin......and i unplug the first one, no change, unplug the second, no change, unplug the 3rd one, it gets worse, so i put it back on, it gets better then i unplug the final one and no change. so im guessin the 3rd one is fcuked?

No dude only working coils will make it worse when unplugged.. broken ones make no difference when unplugged. Find it hard to believe the car runs on one cylinder though

See if it will tick over ok with the MAF unplugged. If it does you could well have a boost leak.
Mine would tick over and run ok with the MAF unplugged al be it down on power and this was becasue of a boost leak.

mmm £49 quid for a coilpack. Did they use a genuine VW part?
Title: Re: turbo problem??
Post by: davetec-s on 02 April 2010, 15:31
yep! only genuine parts, no other way :) the part was £32 by the time tax was on it and £10 for doin the job it was £49. the garage i go to is owned by a guy who used to work for vw and the other 4 guys there have all worked for some sort of german manufacturer in the past. as they told me in the past all the german stuff is pretty much built on the same platform and parts are pretty similar. they are all pretty hot on their stuff so..... he said to me vw did a re-vised coilpack because they have been known to perish so he told me mine was the older so he put the newer one on and even tried to do it under some warranty thing with vw :S summin to do with if they go within an amount of miles they dont charge or something but i was just over havin done 86k lol bstards!!! all fine now tho.
