Hello guys,
After several years in the wilderness, Saab's, Audi's, last VW being a MKII, I have placed my order for the GTi at the weekend. Been reading the forum for a bit now and came across this....http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=145367.msg1326742#msg1326742
Goes into the cost of the new MkVI. Seems like you all got good deals and I'm worried that I haven't!
Spec:
5 door
Deep Black Pearl
18" Monza's (obviously)
510 stereo
Parking Sensors (got used to them on existing car. Must have)
Lux Pack
Rear Air bags (kids)
Tyre Pressure Alert
Coming in at £27,000. Some of you guys have got leather, zenons, et al for that!
Should I be looking for another dealer??
Let me know your thoughts.
Cheers

Well that isn't technically a "deal" as I just speced up your model on the VW website and it came in at £27,290.00. a £290 saving which when you consider your spending 27k isnt really a lot.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if VW are doing money off / deals etc on the GTI. Im sure one of the MK6 boys that have bought one recently will be able to let you know.
-
It's going to be hard work getting the dealer to discount a new GTI.
I managed to get the dealer to come down by almost 2k only because i threatened to go to a dealer in London who had a partnership with a broker.
Have a word with Dealdrivers and see what discount they can offer. I know Keelaw has used them on this forum and was very happy.
-
£290 off ? sorry not laughing at you, I'm laughing at the stealer that was sitting at home last night rubbing his hands at the huge commission he will be getting.
Go back to them, and cancel it, goto a different dealer.
-
A lot of course may depend on when you want the car.
I'd imagine what you've provided relates to a factory order and maybe that being the case someone like a broker could get you a better price.

BAD
There are lots of brokers out there that will get you a much better deal.
dealdrivers, coasttocoastcars, broadspeed, autoebid etc ......
If you don't want to use one of these then get a quote off their website and then take it to the dealers and negotiate a bigger discount.
I got a £2,500 discount and missed the January price increases. I'm sure you should get at least £2000 off now.
Regards
Good Luck.

I phoned 5 dealers without bargaining I asked there best price (my lease co would buy it)...
The most stupid one was € 300 euro discount (I do not know how much of your monopoly money that is, but I reckon not a lot ) and the best one was € 3300 euros discount......11 times more discount for the same car with the same specs etc....I know it drives you crazy...
Oh yes and AFTERWARDS they can suddenly all do the same deal....no thanks...I am not interested....
-
Just been on to UK Car Broker and sent them the details. About to call Dealdrivers. Just looking on their website and it appears there's a £2000 saving. Sounds promising  As Fanters says, there are lots out there. Need to charge my phone by the looks of it...
Dealer sold it to me stating that it is a "niche" model and they have limited profit margins on them. 3% he says. Sounded very convincing. Liked the guy as well...
Thanks for the advice. I'll keep you updated.

Hi
For what its worth, as at least youve already avoided being ripped off by VW, but I got 10% off (car and extras) with carfile.net, and didn't have to give them a penny (vw give them a £150 fee per referral) and they were great, only snag was going to Telford to get the car (from Bradford), so not a problem, and more fun than paying 150quid for a trailer or some pikie to race it up the M6!
Think that was about 2500 I saved and that was back in June 2009, must be more savings now.

I could not get a discount though the dealer gave me a grand more than other VW dealers were offering. It also has to be remembered that a price increase went through as well as a vat rise in January
-
My dealer was offering a 6% discount off a GTI when I ordered at the end of October.
I got more than £290 discount off my Golf R, so go somewhere else and try a bit harder!!
-
I ordered in July, so it's probably not comparable now, but I got the £2,000 scrappage on my old car plus another £2,000 discount (give or take).
The first dealer I went to was talking £500 discount (plus scrappage), but when I went to a second dealer, armed with a Dealdrivers quote which was actually no longer available, the second dealer came down very close to the Dealdrivers figure.

You should tell them thats not great business practice... stocking up valuable shop floor space on models that they dont make money out of. Or if you want to be nasty, you could always tell them to stop talking sh!te.
The £2k your getting is sounding much more reasonable. Keep trying till you bottom out.

I ordered back in October & managed to get a RCD510 & Service pack thrown in on top of scrappage BUT even that was hard work!!!

I agree with Kev
Margins are more like 30% pal

The entire margin in a VW golf is 14% providing the dealer hits every target possible including PCP penetration, mystery shop, Customer satisfaction survey, VW audits, volume bonus which is never the case.
Back in early to mid 2009 you used to be able to get 9/10% off a new gti nowadays that is very hard work as for starters lots of dealers cant even order them also it doesn't make sense to discount a car by that much as it means supplying a new one for less than most the used ones out there.

*****UPDATE, UPDATE, UPDATE*****
UK Car Broker £2430 less than Advantage, Stirling
Coast2coast £1996 less than Advantage, Stirling
Dealdrivers £2226 less than Advantage, Stirling
Now contacted the dealer with these quotes. Says he'll get back to me by the end of the day but is pretty sure that he can't match it. All brokers are quoting for dealerships in the Midlands so would have a good drive back up the road. Nice. Also said that delivery would be July as opposed to my local dealer quoting end of Sept, however looking at previous posts, I think that this may be a touch optimistic.
VWKev, I particularly like your comment, "if you want to be nasty, you could always tell them to stop talking sh!te" It may come to this...
EVO, what you said makes sense. The thieving saleman stated that his dealership is only permitted to sell 12 per year. Can't order/sell anymore afdter that. However, I am starting to doubt this guys integrity

Hi evo, I dont want to be exact, but I got more than 14% discount on mine.
-
Delivery is a million dollar question, many dealers cant even order you a car so delivery is dependant on when they can actually order it. Even if I could take the order I as a salesman would rather tell you September therefor if it comes soon then great. Lead time will be the same regardless of dealer providing they have allocation.
Good luck with the websites
-
If you did then the supplying dealer made a big mistake as an employee I can only get 15%.
Be specific to help other on here when did you order it? If you ordered before price increase then you are protected and likewise the dealer is dont mistake that for extra discount.

It probably helped that my dealer is a client of ours. But still, my point is the same, I dont think there is any set amount of discount they can give, within reason of course.
-
Yes they could give 50% off a gti if they wanted. Your point is valid, if you got more then you are a lucky man and worth keeping that client : ) there will be some unfortunate people on here not getting as much but the car is worth paying for either way.

As you're in central Scotland, it might help to know that my good deal was got from Verve at Bogside, near Wishaw.

Just to let you know the outcome....
Advantage Stirling reduced the price to £26,500, and paired with the generous trade in they offered, decided to continue with them. Taking into account the trade in, broker fee, travel to the Midlands, etc, actually worked out a few hundered quid cheaper than the brokers.
HOWEVER, I had previously contacted Advantage to advise that I would be cancelling the car. They advised that as the car had been ordered, I would lose my deposit. Not the type to accept this sort of thing, I contacted Consumer Advice (08454 04 05 06, www.consumerdirect.gov.uk). They confirmed that under the Consumer Credit Act 1974, Section 57, as I had not signed the credit agreement (or even had the finance approved!), the deposit should be returned.
As soon as this was mentioned to Advantage, they were falling over themselves. Turns out they are charged a 2.5% cancellation fee by VW on the cost of the car. Not sure the salesman should have told me that  That also gave me an extra bit of leverage.
Overall, stand your ground, investigate the legalities, contact consumerdirect.gov. They were really helpful.
Thanks for all your help and advice folks.
Just need to wait till September now. The countdown has officially started....

In all my years of buying cars I have only ever met one good salesman. Trying to negotiate a deal with VW is very hard. Rolf above recommends Verve in Wishaw. I went round 6 VW dealers inclouding Verve. Could I get a discount ? Nope. I negotiate prices in my job and consider myself tactful. The best I could do was get a better price for my trade in.
So when you start reading the amount of discount going around with other posters you really feel frustrated.
I'm really glad I did not go to a broker for the GTI when I read about soopy's problems. I'm confidant my dealer will correct anything that is wrong having bought 6 cars from them.
Walking into a Mitsubishi dealer was a lot easier. I said I am going to buy an outlander elegance and that I have been to another dealer but I am not going to tell you his best price before you tell me yours. 1,000 off right away. Easy and I also admired his straight talking.
Went in to a VW dealer no discounts. Then the salesman proceeds to tell me to add this that and the next thing for the GTi as it will give you a better trade in when the time comes. Really as my Outlander wanted for nothing , every extra you can get was on it. Yet he offered me 2,500 less than the book say's you should get for your can. Baring in mind the outlander is minted.
I will now try to put this at the back of my mind as it's only two weeks away before I pick up the wife's and my pride and joy.

^ Exactly hindsight is a wonderful thing, I was actually shafted twice by dealers further away. I know Kev knows about the other one. I would only deal with a local dealer from now on and not beleive what other far away dealers tell me about lead times etc. The sad thing is i think i found a good salesbloke local too, but he would not budge on price, aor do the lead time/order time i originally wanted PMSL (August order slot delivery before end 2009) he could not do. It would have cost me more from him but it would have arrived quicker i bet and been so much less hassle. Infact i feel like this maybe our last VW group product as a large family who has been loyal to the VWgroup brands since the mid 80s especially as VW and my dealer have not offered any good will gesture for the hassle/crap i went through month after month.

Good afternoon Captain and Happy Easter.
Two weeks to go for you before the delivery. Hope it is an easy and natural one!
I am very pleased with my car and it is wonderful to drive.
So far, I have had/have the following issues:
(1) Mis-aligned bonnet. Now fixed and 100% to my satisfaction. It seems to be a common fault.
(2) Wind rustle at speed from the driver's door. Might need a new door seal.
(3) Speedo/Rev counter/Radio illumination off when the lights are on Auto mode. This seems intermittent and a bit annoying. The dashboard displays come back on once the light sensor turns the healights on! Wierd. MFD is always lit.
This is not too bad and I am sure these will all be fixed. Thankfully my Warranty Manager is quite a wonderful young lady.
I have got the sound system to sound quite decent now to my ears, so I don't feel the need to change the loudspeakers. I will be retro-fitting the Sat Nav unit and the Bluetooth kit soon.
Happy Holidays.
PS: Sorry, this post is a bit off topic. BTW, I got an overall discount of 8%.

am1w a happy Easter to you also.
Good to hear you are getting the small niggles sorted out. Are you on first name terms with the lovely lady yet ! !
Will look out for the Bonnet alignment when picking up the car. I take it you are best to put the bonnet up then down to see this ?
I used to use a VW mechanic for homers. He told me you should always wait about a year after a new model comes out before buying. By then all problems are usually ironed out. That's all very well but when you want into a new car like a Gti your heart tells yourself to go for it
-
Hello Captain:
With the bonnet down, check:
(1) the gaps with the front wings are the same on both sides. This will probably need the bodyshop. Do not let a mechanic to do this. They are hopeless and I have learnt this from bitter experience.
(2) Bonnet edges and upper wing edges are exactly the same on both sides. The bonnet edges should be slightly lower for aestheic purposes. The rubber washers under the bonnet may be used for this.
(3) The gaps between the bonnet edge and the front grill should be consistent and the rubber seals on the bonnet should be in contact with the headlight housings.
(4) Open and close the bonnet a number of times to see if this settles down.
Mis-aligned body panels drive me nuts. I had to get the doors, wings and bonnet of my Honda Type R GT re-aligned!
All part of the 'fun' with a new car!
PS: I am off-topic again!
