Post by: smitty12 on 29 March 2010, 23:24
Last week my car decided to melt the alternator fuse on top of the battery after a quick fix i replaced the fuse and it was fine,
Although its happened again tonight

Any idea's what could be the problem...?

i've read this and it says to replace the fuse box on top of the battery? The box is £70 but the alternator wiring harnes is £40?

Which is it most likely to be?
I'd imagine the wire as its connected to fan and the air con unit? and the fuse box is just a lump of plastic really so cant see how that would make the alternator over charge?

you only need to replace the box if it melts

The wire is breaking down which in turn is sucking all the power from the alternator which makes it heat up the wire. Just take the wire off that runs from your fuse box to the alternator and get a new one made up, shouldn't cost more than a tenner from an ICE shop. VW want around £30 for it
