Title: 2 sec delay on hill start
Post by: VWKev on 29 March 2010, 12:13
Anyone tried it to see if it works ? Basically If you dont get the bite on a hill start the car wont roll back etc as the car will know you messed up and hold you there for 2 secs.

I'm scared to try it hehe, and does it work ?

not tried this kev but it all makes sense now: i always have to do a hill start on way to work every day and usually i will roll back ever so slightly - however i noticed i don't anymore and the car just pulls away - i just thought i was getting better at hill starts - obviously not!!!

Surprised you haven't noticed it already.

Got the same on my Alfa and it's great for those junctions where maybe you'd heel/toe in the past rather than using the handbrake; good piece of technology.

I thought it was an optional extra unless you took DSG?

How on earth can a manual car hold you on a hill without you holding it on the clutch??

Oh yeah, its called a Handbrake.

P3eps is right.

hill hold only works if you press the pedal reasonably hard otherwise it will not activate.
I had it on my old A3 DSG and worked a treat.

This is the 'technology' that Alfa use .... courtesy of Wikipedia:

In layman’s terms, the hill holder function works by using two sensors, in concert with the brake system on the vehicle. The first sensor measures the forward facing incline (nose higher than tail) of the vehicle, while the second is a disengaging mechanism.

When a driver stops their vehicle on an incline where the nose of the car is sufficiently higher than the rear of the car, the system is engaged when the driver's foot is depressing the brake pedal, and then the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Once set, the driver must keep the clutch pedal fully depressed, however, they may remove his or her foot from the brake pedal. To disengage the system and move the car forward, the driver selects first gear, feathers (applies) the gas pedal, and slowly releases the clutch pedal, which, at a point in its travel, releases the braking system allowing the car to proceed.

Just looked on VW.co.uk

Quote: "Hill hold function (Standard on DSG, Optional on manual)"
Its a £90 optional extra - so I guess you'd know if you had it. :nerd:

I'd hope that if you were going to try it out, you'd have the sense to do it on a road with nothing behind you - just incase

I did the configurator of the R... so maybe its a freebie on the GTI?!

See Kev deep inside they all must love you....

Because imagine what would have happened if they advised you to try it out tonight and report back to us (preferably with some pics)..... :lipsrsealed:

BTW...the "manual gear box" issue would then have been settled on the spot ....................
