Worth replacing top mounts and bearings. And car will need to be re alligned.
Keep an eye on venoms eBay shop as they do some good deals. A set
of JOM coilovers (new) wentfor £150 delivered yesterday.
-
Also if you look on ebay, theres a place selling Jamex coilovers with Adjustable drop links for just over £200. Which is worth while cos if you dont have a uprated ARB then you'll need the drop links if you lower 40mm or more
-
just had new top mounts and bearings about 2mouths ago, would it be worth changing again ? think that on in my posting with the link is just over £200 with drop links.
-
how much for top mounts and brearings???
big job???? or avarage cost for garage to install whole lot????
interested in these coil overs 2 as got decision, get just springs the now and save say 4 to 5 hundred for a so called good set up or get cheaper coilovers. have been told buy cheap 2 b4 but these jamex get good enough reviews.

would be great, thanks mate

Bought a set of these in november last year, make sure you protect them by applying protection wax before puting them on. I did this once on the car and the area in which couldnt get to rusted badly on the springs and had to take them off and get the surrplyer to give me new set.
They will need regaular cleaning otherwise could be good chance may seize!!

Put these on my MkIV about a month ago - have done about 300 miles on them with no problems whatsoever. Firmer but not a harsh ride, exactly what I wanted.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Nah I didn't go for adjustable DL's - I only lowered around 40mm and haven't had any rubbing issues at all. However I did replace the following parts, especially as some of the bolts have a nylon thread and aren't as good 2nd time around. Worth doing for the cost:
N 106 944 01 - Lower ARB Droplink to Wishbone Bolt - QTY 2 @ £0.96 ea
N 102 078 04 - Front Lower Strut Mounting Bolt - QTY 2 @ £1.72 ea
N 101 064 02 - Front Lower Strut Mounting Nut - QTY 2 @ £0.65 ea
1J0 412 331 C - Front Topmount - QTY 2 @ £9.10 ea
1J0 412 249 - Front Strut Bearing - QTY 2 @ £6.96 ea
N 905 173 04 - Rear Lower Strut Mounting Bolt - QTY 2 @ £1.08 ea
N 102 861 10 - Rear Lower Strut Mounting Nut - QTY 2 @ £0.44 ea
N 906 484 02 - Rear Upper Mounting Bolt - QTY 4 @ £1.51 ea

Need Topmounts anyways as my cheap ones i got have failed i think http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=153530.0
Anything elce i may need ? so far its Coilovers-Droplinks-Waxoil- and all the above.

I covered all the threads in copper grease as well...big tub from Halfords costs about £7.
Will
-
Waxoil, copper grease same thing ?
-
No Wax oil is generally put on the underneath of a car to protect it. Copper grease is usually used to prevent threads sticking etc etc

Had some bad news the guy who was going to fit my Coilovers has died in a motorbike accident, R.I.P he was a sound guy.
I can get them done for £40 front and £40 Rear but i was only originally be paying £35 for them all, So Two questions :-
Is £80 a good price?
Also how had is it to fit the rear shockers, hight adjustment thingiy and the springs ? because i want to cut right down on labour costs i was thinking fitting the rear ones and having them set high then driving to the garage and then paying for the fronts fitted, lowed to the high i want.
Then lowering the rears once i have the new coilovers fitted on the front.
-
The back ones are pretty easy - much easier than the front. Obviously you'll need a jack, axle stands and socket wrench - worth checking but I think the top of the strut needs a 16mm socket and the bottom bolt needs an 18mm. You might be able to do it without, but a spring compressor comes in very handy to get the old spring out and put the new one in. The new one will have an adjuster on the bottom which, when you can screw in/out using the provided C-spanner to get it at the desired height - really easy to do yourself. I wound mine to the very bottom before fitting to set it at its lowest. Then jack the car up and turn clockwise with the C-spanner to raise it up if needed.
Any questions let me know. Fitting the Jamex was the first thing I had attempted relating to the suspension and the back ones really were pretty straightforward - just the front ones that are a b!tch to get out.
However a decent spring compressor will cost you £20+, and £80 doesn't sound a bad price to me for having the whole lot fitted. Like I say, if you want to adjust them afterwards all you will need is a jack, axle stands (to be safe) and the C-spanner which comes in the box with the coilovers.

Again Will your there with a answer  , thank you.
think ill do the rear my self at my mates near the garage then drive down and get them to do my fronts and get the hole thing aligned.
Didn't think £80 was to bad but when it gose from £35 [mates rates] to £80 just a bit  lol but think ill be happy with £40 fronts fitted.
also found this in the maintenance section
http://noahlh.com/car/coilover_howto/
should come in handy as well
-
£20 a corner sounds a very good price mate as i was quoted £40 a corner obviously meaning id be paying £400+ for coilover's and fitting :undecided:

I got my jamex fitted today and was a pain in the arse, just make sure that if you have 18'' wheels get the right spacers, I ended up buy 4 packs as 2 were wrong. But still have to file down the others so they fit nicely. Other then that it's nice. Lowered 60mm. :)

My rears are long gone, so need to replace them defo, i am guessing you don't get them with the coilovers. And because its got shockers on the rear think well need new bump stops. maybe wrong so anyone ?

1J0 512 131 C - Rear Sports Bump Stop - QTY 2 @ £14.92 ea

The guy who's fitting my coilovers is going away for a mouth so i am rushing getting them fitted only time can get in is Saturday morning, but i don't have any rear bump stops as of yet, do VW have them in stock normally or is it a specialist item to order in ?
If i cant get any can i run them for a bit without them then get them fitted or fit them my self.
thanks
-
Give your local dealer a ring - If they aren't in stock they can order them which normally only takes a couple of days.

:undecided: Hope they have some in stock then, getting them fitted tomorrow, and it can't really wait as i ve got to get the tracking sorted as its mashing up my tiers on the outa edge and pulling to one side so not very safe
Plus i am only paying £35 mates rates for getting them fitted in stead of £80 at my mates mates garage.
Would i be abile to use my old ones/ temporally till i get the new ones and get them fitted

My old rear springs and shocks, you can see how FOOOOOKED my bump stops are
i haven't been able to go as low as i wanted mainly because i didn't have any adjustable drop links, as it was a rush job getting it in to be done, but the guy says he well fit them for nothing as well as my new rear bump stops when i get them so cant complain.
My alignment was so bad at the garage i went to the Lazar alignment was almost off the scale, drives very nice now
the problem is now when i look at my golf i relay want to change my alloys low profile tyres etc, and Bolf it. :undecided:
I would recommend the Jamex coilovers so far i had a nice drive home firm but not bone braking seam solid and a good price. But speed bums i used to be able to do 30-40 over now its a 20mph crawl over them lol
-
After 34 months
There still going well kind of the rear shocks/dampers have failed need to replace. but fronts are still going. ride is pretty bouncy as well but they were cheap. Wouldn't buy again would prob save longer and get beter quality ones on my next car.
