ok here goes
someone gave me a K&N and seeing as it was free i thought what the hell. 30 minutes later it was on and car going noticed a nice new sound to the engine and throttle was little sharper i know it can give an increase of a few BHP but i only noticed an improvement in throttle response. been on the car which is an 8v for about maybe a week and i had some misfiring problems didnt think nothing of it checked the plugs leads and cap. cap is brand new so is rotor arm they seemed fine pulled on a lead and the cable came away leaving the end and heat shield on the car. naturally thinking that this was the problem got some more leads and tried them still not quite right. checked sequence and sparks to make sure i hadnt done something wrong, all ok. after about an hour or so of messing about with leads and trying to tune it see if there was any improment in the firing i decided to check the air filter not sure why plugged in the old filter just quickly and the car started and ran perfect totally confused at this as it makes no sense but i no little about induction kits or the air inlet but when i examined the flap at the front there is oil seeping out of it :S not good .
the car is running perfectly now and tuned up nicely :D but still confused at why it was firing badly(no backfiring just misfiring like a plug wasnt connected) could 2 large holes being drilled into the filter on the k&n cause any probs like this? as the previous owner did this.

strange one that mate.
sounds like the mixture was leaned out by the extra air going in because of the freer flowing air.
does the engine make a pinking noise when you exclerate?

was the K&N and the old airbox using the same air flow meter or different meters?

and do you mean holes drilled in the air box or the filter itself? also is it a panel filter or a cone shape filter

no pinking at all which i thought was odd as for the air flow metering i dont know as the new filter came without anything but the pipes and filter. finally the drill holes where in the filter itself on the base of the cone there are 2 drilled holes either side of the main hole i know there drilled cause the idiot went into far and damaged the inside of the filter abit.
i spoke to my mate on the phone last night and he is goner come take a look he thinks maybe the car has been chipped as its being a pain to time perfect and with the induction on it was near impossible.

Shouldnt be any holes in the back of the cone. Well none that dont need a sensor in them! So totally sealed!

if its an 8v you have to time it off the fly with a strobe gun at 2500 rpm with the blue temp plug disconnected, rev the engine to over 3000rpm 3 times to clear the ecu once you have disconnected the blue plug then get some one to hold it at 2500rpm then get the dash on the fly lined up with the pointer, or the middle of the hole in the garbox casing. paint them white so you can se them easier

I bet the 2 drilled holes where a lame attempt to house the 2 pipes that used to connect to the old air box.
One's for the warm air feed and one for the fuel regulator (I think That's right!)
Just get a panel filter and use the original box with the resonator removed - u get the same noise and throttle response without the hassle!

not to sound like an idiot but whats the resonator?

That funnel that goes from the front of the air box inwards.
It's designed to reduce the noise of the incoming air - but we don't want that !! ;D
