Hello everyone, i'm new here!
just taken ownership of a 1999 golf v5 which may or may not turn out to be a disaster, it's been somewhat unloved by previous owners and needs a few bits but I still consider it a good deal as I swapped it for our horrible freelander 1.8.
first job is going to be a driveshaft i'm pretty sure as it sounds awful when turning right so i'll get it booked in on monday.
a couple of questions if I may:
timing chain - the car is on 110k and i have no history - do these chains go on and on or is it recommended to change at 100k or similar? there is a very slight ticking sound which can be heard from the engine but only when you're out of the car
someone has changed the tape part of the stereo for an aftermarket piece of junk which is broken anyway - the cd bit is still above it - can I just buy another mk4 golf tape player and it will work with the cd player above? or do i need a specific one?
idle - the car idles at a constant speed and this seems fine, although when doing you can feel a vibration in the car. if you feather the throttle so engine speed is a little higher, say ~1000rpm, it feels much smoother. is this a characteristic of the v5 engine or an indication of a problem? it certainly drives very smoothly

Cam chains on VR6's need checking and replacing around 100k to be honest.

welcome m8 happy days another fello v5 owner.
the v5s do idle at around 800 rpm well mine does anyway plus when idle the car does rock a little i think the dog bone needs upgrade.
