Title: What made you a Golf nut?
Post by: keefusg60 on 15 November 2004, 20:17
Just wondered what triggered us all to be mad about our Golfs?

Mine was as a 17 yr old, getting into my mates Mk1 1.3 Driver, and wanting one from then on. And now, 13 years later, I'm finally the proud owner of a Mk1 GTI. ;D
Happy days!

Not so much a golf nut as a Dub Nut. I was in my newly bought Scirroco about 13 years ago, when I was hit at over 100mph. Got out with a minor scratch and whiplash - though I was unconscious for the weekend. A lesser marque would have left me dead. And just one drive in my Cab or Corrado would be enough to re-affirm the faith in the build quality and performance. And the kudos that owning such a pair of rare motors gives, is awesome.

I have been into vw's for aslong as i can care to remember, started off being a beetle nut, then started to like the looks and comfort of the golf, took me a while to get one, but now i have i would not part with it for the world.

well Maybe for a split screen camper ;)

must be something about having a good back swing ;)

*spot the lame attempt at a joke, i'll get my coat*

I dunno why i love em, think its the cult following they have, and that there is the fact that they are sooooooooo cool!  and there fairly easy to maintain when you have one of the basic engines :)

Well, we always had the passat and the golf (real passat, not any of this modern cr@p) and i always really hated the golf cos it was so small, and slow compared to the golf, then we replaced the passat for a volvo  :'( :'( :'( :'( Sad day :'( :( Anyway, when i was given the golf it kinda grew on me, a lot ;D I still haven't forgotten the passat though, one day..............

I have always wanted a kubelwagen and have only ever driven vw cars ?plus the fact that wolfsberg made vehicles for the wehrmacht and their plates all began with W H my initials. ;D

My uncle came out of the army when I was 13. Swapped his MERC for the then 6 month old V reg MK1 - first of the five speeders.

We had the odd bit of fun with speed I have to say and I fell in love with it - couldn't belive it when he agreed to teach me to drive in it when I got my provisional at 17!

Got myself an 8valve in 91 and I kept it for 5 years - before that I changed my car thru boredom every 6 months!

I was Really into Civics and jap cars since i was 14, 2 months before i past my test i really wanted a civic but couldnt afford one. My mate sold me his golf 1.6 for ?700. I took it only Customcivics.co.uk to show everyone, And they totally Slated it calling it a ugly piece of sh!t. So i got in a moody teenage temper tantrum and told them all to f**k them selfs and that im gonna go make the car look good and then make it faster.

One year down the road and a lot of them have started saying how they like it ?>:D

Had 2 early MK2s before the old company Mondeos came along :-[
Kept with the family car till the last couple of years when I changed job, lost the car and after a few sheds, bought a Mk1 1.3 ;D
Brilliant car. Loved it to bits, which is what happened to it. :o

Didn't think I could afford the insurance for a Gti, till I made enqs about a Driver & then a GTi. Not much difference :D

Tried to find a reasonable Mk1 Gti, but anything over ?500 needed ?1000s spending. Went for a Mk2 and it was the first car for years that I actually enjoyed driving 8)
Have now sold that and got myself a goodun.............and so it goes on. ;D

ive had so many cars/hot hatches since i was 17 (oh god, there i go again, 13 years ago!!! :o) me and my mates have been into aircooled stuff since we all used to skate/bmx we started going to bug jams when we were 15, it kind of grew on me, but things dont always go to plan and the 1st cars i had were fords and vauxhalls, but then a few vw's came my way (mk1 scirocco storm,mk1 golf cl, along with a bug and a camper) then things went other brands again as i settled down and had kids etc, then one day i spotted a h plate mk2 8v at a main dealer vw, paid loads for it as it was main dealer but it was fun, till i noticed it sat on the p1ss, after many arguments it turned out the 1 owner was the farmer son who had repeatedly stuffed it in a d**e so i got my cash back and went to another brand, then i came across the mk4 i now have last year, then i came across a mk2 8v for a work mobile, which i then sold for a newer 8v gti, then i got a 16v (which im missin now) now thats gone in a trade and in return i have a mk2 scirocco scala along with a 1973 bug, and i still have my mk4 gti so you could say im vw mad really!!! well all my neighbours/friends think i am!!!

just my bit!

Gaz ;D

Lost count of the cars i've driven.
Got sold on Golfs by my son-in-law. He's had loads of different Mk 1, 2 & 3's. Tuned ones and standard.
So when i came for me to buy another car he wouldnt take no for an answer.
Glad it came out that way. The car is just what i want. So now i'm a Golf nut too!

Always wanted a buggy too, but am beginning to lean towards a Camper now! :-\

Still love my Mi 16 tho! ::)

always wanted a mk1 golf as my first car as they had far more class than any other comparable small hatch. Unfortunately finances dictated that I should have a ford first. In 1995 after driving for three years I bought my first mk2 16v. I've been driving mk2's ever since (well apart from a couple of short spells in other cars after writing a couple of golfs off  :'( ).
There are now three mk2 golfs on my drive and I love 'em as much as when I first got in one almost 10years ago.

"when i was a young lad"..only 19, they were still making Mk2s.

I detested them. thought they were ugly bricks.

Until a friend took me out in his 16v. He hammered this thing and it was sweet.

Bought mine for 4.2k 1 month later. She was a 4 year old Campaign, with 40k on the clock and was arguably one of the best examples around.

bought a mk2 driver (1600 carb) for a first car and it was such a solid reliable car that ive had nothing but mk2's since ;D dad had a tidy 16v in oak green aswell when i was younger so that probably influenced me too

As many of you have said already, I've had a fair ammount of cars in my time. As I got closer to 20 they got sportier and I finally escaped the chav Nova SR thingy every teenager in the 90's seems to have experienced !

I finally got a lovely red old skool XR2 - the fastest car I had owned until that point - even started racing them! Cheap - light - and the CVH was very tunable. After putting my BSc in auto enginering to use under the bonnet and having a barking mad engine that would do 120 miles to a full tank I was rather pleased .... then the fun began with bits breaking almost weekly - rust appearing everywhere - then finally the bottom end going bang racing a R5GTT.

After that I was looking for something from the old skool hot hatch era with solid build and performance - no choice really but a Mk2 Golf GTI!!

I did like them before I started to look, but had never been in one, or knew anyone that owned one - but since getting my current ride I've never looked back!

Just wish I started sooner and not wasted sooooo much money on other cars :(

Me bro's (who is a fair bit older than me) first car was a red Y reg Mk1 that he bought off his mate for ?300, but this soon broke, and he replaced it with a white Y reg Mk1 1.8 (I think) GTI.? He kept this for ages, but eventually replaced it with a nice black 2.0 16v Mk3.? This served him well for a good while until the cam belt came off on the motorway? >:( (but it had done about 160K miles by then!).? He now has a motorbike instead.

I started off with a 1.0 pug, which I shared with me ma', but when I moved out of home I bought me a 1.4 Polo (which my wife now pootles about in), and last December I got my own Golf GTI? ;D

My first car was a fiat Pnda and also my second. I came to change me car and looking around I found a MK2 Driver 3dr in black. I liked it so I bought it. I had the car for 5 yrs with no problems untill it reached 160k and tthen the gearbox gave up. Replaced this only to have it written offf by a bus a week later:-(
I went out and bought a replacement MK3 Driver 5dr which wasnt as good and the head gasket went with only 79k showing, had this repaired and about 6 months later lost it on oil and water on Huntingdon ring rd (made the front page of the local paper).

Well no question went out and bought a GTi 8v but this nearly killed my love of golfs. It cost me in the 12 months of ownership nearly ?2500 in parts.

However I got rid of it and purchased a MK3 GTi  which wasnt as quick but certainly more refined.

I now have a garden and garage full of projects including a MK2 campaign 8v which when its finnished will be my daily driver as it is having the engine totally rebuilt, and the full braking system. The interior is mint and totally unmolested. Then its bye bye slow mk3 and hello fun fun fun on back rds, although I will miss abs

Started with veedubs 20 years ago  :o with 1200 cc Beetles and a 1303S (which I still have). Corrado owner now but still have very fond memories of an E reg mk2 8v and would have another one at the drop of a hat. :)

I remember when the GTi/XR3/GTE's were launched, totally new family hatchbacks that would blow the doors of any supposedly quick car of the late seventies/early eighties.

I suppose the attraction of VW's are their honesty, just quality engineering rather than relying on gimmick's although it seems as though the latest mk5's have had to be fitted with a fair share to keep up with everthing else.

I must admit to being a particular fan of the mk2 which in my eyes is a classic shape (not to say that the mk1 isn't) which became diluted with the mk3. I like the mk4 but not sure about the mk5 yet, some days I like it other days I don't ::)
