What do you think about steel grey? I have only seen one and that was 5dr, anyone got pics of 3dr and a clean 5dr.
-
Colour choice is ever so personal.
I have seen quite a few lower spec Mk6 Golfs in this colour in London. My personal opinion: they look quite dull. However, the GTi might be another matter. I think 'standard' Golfs look dull in all colours except Candy White. This is quite a dramatic colour IMO.
Mine is Tornado Red which is also quite dramatic and in addition it does not show the dirt as much as Candy White!
Metallic paints may also seem to be tougher wearing. See the link below:

A good idea is to use the search box , type in your colour and up will pop posts in that colour where you should find pictures of chosen colour.

My MK5 was in Steel Grey, loved that colour on the mk5 and love it on the mk6.
Classy, understated and discreet.
In fact I've only seen two mk6 GTIs in Steel Grey, so it's not too common either (not that you could call mk6 GTIs common thanks to the build delays).
It suits the GTI. The grey contrasts well with the black bits and red highlights & looks even better with the shiny and black Shadows.
However I saw a new Polo in that colour yesterday, looked dull as hell (and a new Polo looks just like a base model Golf but taller) and it drove straight through a red traffic light! In fact it overtook me who was sat at said traffic light to drive straight through it. I know that's got nothing to do with the topic, but I thought I'd mention it anyway!

My MK5 ED30 was Steel Grey...
I really liked it - it blended in and was pretty easy to keep.
I was tempted to go for the same again, but fancied something slightly different!

I can't decide whether I like it or not: it looks nice, but odd at the same time, at least on a sporty GTI.

Go for a dramatic colour if you feel young at heart: Red or White?
-
As others have said its a personal thing. If it was me and i wanted gray i would be going for the other one.
-
Only you can decide on the grey, it's a personal decision. Me and the wife pondered over Reflex Silver, Steel Grey and utlimately Carbon Grey. We were going to change our original Reflex Silver order to Steel Grey and went to the showroom to have a look at it on a std Mk6. It was a bit lifeless for me, so we changed to Carbon Grey instead. Haven't seen Carbon Grey in the flesh, but it looks good in pics we've seen.
But ultimately it's not what others think, it's down to you and what you like

Agreed, in some of those pics it looks a bit odd! I went for it anyway though as i've got a mk5 in it at the mo and found it fairly easy to care for and as p3eps says it blends in, I love the mk6 in red and white but they just aren't for me, my dealer tried to convince me to go for carbon grey but it's a bit too dark for me having had black cars in the past, i would have love it in rising blue!

I would have to agree with your dealer on that one. I have had 2 or 3 black cars in the past and vowed never to get one again (swirl marks, impossible to keep clean, etc.). CG is nowhere near as dark as black and doesn't show the dirt nearly so much.

Hi FroGTi:
Can you tell us what you have by completion of your signature, please.

Aug 2009 carbon grey 5 door DSG, remapped by Revo to 275hp, Interlagos wheels. R led rear lights since last month.

Thanks, but it needs to go into the signature section where your picture is, if you don't mind.
Nice spec.

It all comes down to how you maintain the body work in dark colours. I would never put a dark colour through a machine wash or use one of the many had washes that are about. Washing the car yourself the proper way will stop swirl marks. However I understand some don't have the time of the facilities do it themselves. I had a black A3 and after three years there was not a mark on it. My current car is silver but I find it very boring to look at after a while. So have a black pearl golf on order. I know it will take more cleaning than the silver car but will look very good.

No offence, mate, but actually I do mind  That is why I have chosen to have a simple picture with a couple of highlights. If others want to include every boring detail of their car's spec in their signature, then I have no problem with that, but I don't really want to follow

No offence taken here either.

Tell me about it. 21 years in England and 25 in France. Help, I'm more French than English. I'm more of a Belgian beer man, though, so there is hope

It's all too, too much.
Have just learned how to re-programme a couple of things.
My turn will come next month when I have the RNS 510 and FISCON installed.
Busy at present getting my bonnet re-aligned!

just picked up this week...Hi from Sydney...
Welcome to the board. Very nice car, but I suggest you post your pix in a new thread, so everyone can see them. Especially as this is the Steel Grey thread and your GTI is Carbon Grey (like mine)
-
Just got back from the Big Apple and i saw a
Steel Carbon Grey gti driving through Times Sq looked really
Really stood out amoung all the yellow cabs and was turning a lot of heads, it would of been a great pic but my bloody camera was full
Looks a really nice colour in the flesh
-
(1) Grey.
(2) High quality undercoat. Sorry Snoops!
(3) Suits our weather.
Now, Carbon Grey is a much better colour.

I think in some markets Carbon Grey is marketed as Carbon Steel? In the UK Steel Grey is the equivalent to United Grey.
-
Exonian - here in Dubai carbon grey is carbon steel grey and the steel grey in the pictures (in the earlier pages of this thread) is called united grey..
-
I like carbon grey but although the car from Sydney looks great I do think the 17" wheels do it an injustice. Somehow the shadows make the car look bigger and suit it better, just an opinion so sorry to all those with 17s.

IMO, that inch makes all the difference!
-
The funny thing is i don't like any photos of the mk6 with the 17s on but in real life some colours i don't mind them on as to me in real life the 17s and 18s look bigger again.

The Germans don't believe in Karma.
I think they prefer army grey cars as this colour is in their comfort zone.
I am sorry your car is tending to be a pain in the arse (PITA).

Snoops: There is Karma. Stupidly dropped my briefcase + shopping on the offside front wing and dented it in 4 places. Looks awful. Thankfully, no broken paint or scratches! Bloody upset.
Thankfully, Luis from A1 dents will come to my work address tomorrow and fix it. I have known him since he first started many years ago and he is superb. Plus, I got a good deal.
Now who has the biggest bite on his sorry arse?

We're all still waiting for piccies am1w! A wise man once said "Without pics it didn't happen!" i think that's what he said anyway

I am very upset as to what has happened. My stupid fault for rushing here, there and everywhere.
Was hell today at work. Power station outage. No computers, no phones, huge problems and then this.
Some sympathy please.
Hopefully Luis Perez of A1 dents will be able to get it fixed and perfect.
PS: I am hurt that there is no sympathy from Snoopy after all I have been through with and for him.

Alright....I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune and i wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy  OK?
Now get it fixed n washed and get some pics up!!!!!!!!!

Getting it washed and hovered on Saturday at my local VW dealership with my Toughseal shampoo etc.
Charge: £10. Not bad.

Vacuumed in new money, hovered in old money.
Hope it all works out tomorrow. Otherwise, this is the last you will hear from me!
To some on this forum, this would be a boon!

All dents fixed perfectly except one which is impossible to get to & thankfully difficult to pick out.
Took Luis Perez of A1 dents over 1 hour. Job done.

We don't know what you drive. It is probably a White Golf Bluemotion with those dinky wheels.
-
Ah attack, the best form of defence
See you never denied not having a GTI anyway.
Believe it or not the big picture below gives it away!! Yeah a white bluemotion
-
I went for white, but if i hadn't i would have probably picked Carbon Grey, it looks good in the metal. The Silver and steel grey don't look quite as nice to me. It's all about personal preference of course so go and see some in the metal if you can.
-
spotted my first Golf R yesterday near clapham junction c6pm - 3dr steel grey and looked very nice indeed
colour certainly suited the R - and they look soo much better in 3dr than 5dr
