Title: What Fuel to use - Super Unleaded or Standard - does it matter?
Post by: TFSiLover on 28 March 2010, 11:00

Now the world or should I say my employer is going green, they are introducing HMRC average fuel rates which means 14p per mile on petrol right now (costs about 18p to run my current car right now at 32mpg). I have been a loyal supporter of Shell Optimax accross the last four years in my A3 2L Tfsi (mk5 gti engine), in the belief I will 1. go quicker and 2. it keeps the head and fuel system clean avoiding potential engine trouble. I have found this to be true but wonder if running the weaker 95ron would have been okay anyway. The VW/Audi car dealers normally fill their own cars with Super, surely that says something.

So my questions are:

1. Will standard unleaded be okay most of the time instead of super - about 6p difference per litre?
2. What MPG can I expect from the MK6 (looking to purchase soon)?
3. Is the fuel consumption really better in the MK6 - 888 engine compared to 113?

I get about 32mpg from my A3 but I drive it like its stolen about 70% of the time.

I know the other option is diesel but 'BORRING?' and the rate is 11p, still not great.

Cheers

 :nerd:

If its a company car i really don't know why your bothering.
The mk5 was designed for 98 like it says in the fuel filler lid. The mk6 EA888 lists as 95.

The company will only pay me 14ppm back, so if it cost 18ppm and I do say 25K a year, thats £1,000 year additional cost to me in fuel. Have got used to the sweet 2litre engine, diesels do not cut it with their tractor sound and no revs where the fun begin ion petrol. Some changes in fuel and driving style during work time would narrow the gap. The other option is a big powerful diesel, get the same rate for diesels over 2litre (14ppm). The HMRC rate for petrol is based on 36mpg.

My thoughts exactly.

Now where's the link to photos of your new car Snoopy. We've been waiting for so long I can't believe you've actually taken delivery.

Just picked up my nice (not so shiney but wet) gti. In the book it states that there's no MPG or output enhancements from using higher grade fuel than the standard 95.

Personally, I used 95 for the first month or so. Changed to 99 and noticed quite a difference so I'm sticking with 99.

Whether the extra mpg/bhp are worth the extra cost is a matter of opinion.

Getting lousy fuel consumption.
Using high octane petrol. 75 miles of town driving so far with a full fat diet of traffic jams.
Trip computer registering average 13.9 mpg! Not happy.
Mileage so far: 315 miles.

Don't worry. The fuel consumption gets a bit better as everything gets bedded in. Mine can only manage 270miles on a full tank to start with. Change my engine oil at 2000miles and now my car can manage 360miles with 4000miles on the odo!
Shell v-power only for my beloved GTI!

Yes, will do an oil change at 2000 miles and start using Shell V Power or equivalent BP. Been using Total as the petrol station is conveniently located.

I think i've racked up most miles in a Mk6 (now on 14K) and i'm averaging 30mpg on a remapped car driven 'enthusiastically'

Defo goes better on 99 but I also notice getting more miles per tank on 99 so justified?

Fingers crossed. Hope I get to those figures too.
At present, I am bleeding petrol!

My mrs loved the Ed30 she didnt want to part with that!! Now she loves The GTD and all the toys, and she dosent drive it neather even the ACC she likes to ajust that to her liking!!

Your GTI should settle down a bit after about 2k miles hope it gets better? Around london the GTI is poor for MPG?   ps there's only a second in it?

The mpg is not poor it is bloody awful!
This is the first time any of my cars has drunk petrol as if it was going out of flipping fashion.
Lets hope it improves. Otherwise, it is back to the dealer for a tweak-a-boo!

That does seem very low mpg? Maybe the ecu needs to checked by the dealer, they have to map it again? It as been known befor!

If you're stuck in London traffic all the time, I wouldn't be surprised at getting less than 20mpg. Get out of the city this weekend and give it a proper long run, you'll see a vast improvement.

Mine's only done <800 miles so far but even in stop start town traffic mixed in with a couple of short motorway drives the lowest I've dropped down to is 29 mpg on Shell's finest

Both my mk5 and mk6 had an improvement in mpg around the 1500mile mark (not exact as it may be a km setting).

There is something in the ECU that changes around this mileage.
Also the engine is bedded in and working better.

I've just come back from a 300 mile round trip (mostly on the M1 plodding along at 75mph) and averaged 39 mpg.. Also have now crept over the 1k miles so will see how the mpg fairs going forward now that she's loosening up a bit

Typo surely, I'm sure you meant 70mph.
Fo those interested I can confirm the mpg is around the published 10% up on the mk5.

I just heeded the advice in the GTI brochure as follows :

"Thanks to the knock control, unleaded four star (at least 95 RON) can be used instead of unleaded Super plus. In order to achieve maximum fuel consumption benefits on the TSI engine, Ultra Low Sulphur Petrol (ULSP) must be used."

Result is an average around town of 32 and on motorways around 36. Seems reasonable to me for a 2 litre turbo.

I'm a bit confused. I just got my mk6 GTI. The manual says that there is no benefit to use more then 95 RON although you can use 98 RON. I have two choices. 95 RON V-power or regular 98 RON?
Title: Re: What Fuel to use - Super Unleaded or Standard - does it matter?
Post by: Spartacus on 21 April 2010, 14:17
Have done 6000 miles now and only used 95RON once on a full fill up on an empty tank, never again. Engine note dropped, was a different car.

Now only use Shell V Power or Tesco 99.

Just been to Wales and back, 450 miles could have done it on a single tank. Computer read 44.5mpg and I was cruising at 75mph the whole time, virtually all motorway.

My MkV GT TDi 140bhp would do 50 mpg for the same journey.

Amazing engine, it has loosened up nicely now, quicker as well, particularly mid range.

Agree with that... had an easy 450miles out of a full tank and that was in the 1st weeek of ownership.
