is the ignition coil on a mk 1 cabrio gti ballast resisted?
i have been told this could be the problem of the missfiring problem the car has, and i should change it for a 12v non ballast coil
is this a good shout?

I'm not sure but be sure before you change it... I know non GTI models can have ballast resistance and if its not in place can melt the points.... I always thought that the Hall sender unit on a GTI managed the voltage and therefore the coil itself was not ballast resisted, i could be wrong. :undecided:

Yep, I'd go along with that, as I've jsut replaced everything and didn't find a ballast resister anywhere.

depends on the age of it, but its likely to have a transistorised ign setup which doesnt use a balast coil, my 83 cabby GTI had transistorised ign :)
-
its an 88 gti, i doubt its got points it must be electronic ignition surely not even my mini has points lol
may change the coil anyway see if it helps

dont be so sure..... what engine have you got 1.8 K-Jet? or have you got digifant?
-
it deffo wont be points, as i say my 83 cabby gti wasn't :)

When did VW ditch points then?
-
some time around 84/85 for carbys, gti models got electronic ignition earlier than that though :)
-
mines an 83 tintop and i swear its on points???
-
mine could be a special case, as it was a RHD import, often german market cars got the changes before the UK market. although the early series 2 MK1 GTI I converted to ABF had electronic ignition as well...

i don't know a great deal about vw engines but i assume its k-jet as its mechanical fuel injection

if the Dizzy has a little multiplug on the side, that means it has a hall sender, which in turn means, no points.
My '81 1600 GTi has no points, tbh, I think all GTi's were electronic-ish ignition, but they retained the mechanical advance and retard mechanisims, the only 100% electronic system was on the 16v KR lump on wards.
