Title: Music via RNS510
Post by: ErikGTI on 27 March 2010, 15:11
To be ...uhhh...well prepared .....for coming friday...PICKING UP my GTI I bought the whole lot in Medialand today...

I am among christmas presents at the moment... ..now have bought..an Ipod Classic 160Gig...a USB stick 32 Gig...an SD-card 2Gig..and a mini sd-card for the phone...

MY BURNING QUESTION....is there a way to play my classical music "lossless" ....if I do not want to work with cd's...the amount of Gig is probably enough for a nuclear meltdown...but all I seem to end up with is MP3 so it seems...

Second smaller question..Why is the acceptance of an SD-card maximized to 2Gig...is our GTI already behind the latest greatest mediapossibility... :lipsrsealed:

My logistics are...the Ipod for all the pop-albums..... the SD-card for a steady repetoire of classical music and the Memory Stick for quickly exchanging the newest music.. :smug:

Thanks Okay you are saying burn or buy something lossless on a cd as .WAV and copy/store it onto the harddisk...

What about this Ipod lossless stuff...can I write lossless music (flac) from the internet on that Ipod (Flac or do I need WAV) and feed it to the RNS510...is that something to do with the AAC extension....

Yes exactly, I dont have an RNS510 so I'm unsure of the commands or the setup to do this, but with their being a HDD built into the RNS there will be some sort of command in one of the menus that will let you copy to HDD. The flac files that are on your ipod already will play just like any other music format i.e. mp3. I'm not sure how to get the ACC files over as they are encrypted in some way to prevent copying. Your on your own with that one as I dont know.

Do FLAC files play on the 510's and or the ipod?
I've always had to convert them to MP3 or AAC before.

I would try it myself but my PC is gubbed

I thought flac's play on ipod normally ? If they dont, a 320k lame converted flac to mp3 should sound pretty good still.

You just need to have .wav files on your IPod. 30gig is plenty of space. Wav is 100% lossless CD quality and can be imported directly via Itunes from your CD's. Just set your import preferences in Itunes. Of course they take up the most space so you may already know all this. But I'd rather pick and choose what's on my IPod if necassary and have everything in Wav format.

Eric, just update the firmware on the RNS (to version 2680 or above) and the world of 32GB SDHC cards is your oyster

Could you clarify whether the latest firmware is 2680 as you mention or 2660 as advertised by some sellers in eBay?
Thanks.

p3eps: Might I ask, where are you going to purchase your retrofit RNS 510 from so that it has this latest firmware?
I suppose this can also be installed via an update disc if one can source it.

Its under my desk as I type!  I bought it about 4 months ago from ebay.
Relaible source... hmmm... Its from Lithuania   The guy said it was from a written off car, but who REALLY knows?!
As long as you buy a 'C version' unit, you can upgrade the firmware without any problems.  Its just a case of downloading and burning it onto a disk - then put it in and leave it for 50mins.
If you want new firmware, check out www.my-gti.com

Onwards and outwards I go to buy and get one installed + the FISCON.
I am carp at doing it myself.

I have asked this question before but that is because I am worried... :embarassed:

I have filled up my Ipod...so 18.000 tracks meaning 110 Gig (50 Gig left) will my RNS be able to communicate...

I am asking this because my brother (with the same Ipod and in the same situation) connected it with his BMW Pro Nav and everything electronic shut down....back to the dealer and his nav was not able to handle so much data...it was able to handle a couple of Gig.......so he now works with a crappy radio Mhz antenna connection device...for me a no go..

Erik: Have you specc'd the Dynaudio with your RNS 510?
Title: Re: Music via RNS510

Nope..believe it or not but I listen at incredible low volume to music in the car...for a lot of reasons.

But when I listen it has to be good music....nowadays all the radiostations including my favorite classical  are letting me down (giving me unwanted news every 5 minutes about murder/rape/theft/politics) so I opted for the Ipod...

In the meantime I have found out that the Ipod connection will give me full use of the Ipod...so I will be good for the entire lease period..with popular music on my Ipod.... and classical on the SD card/mem stick/hard disk/cd.....
