Well finished work earlier to get all my paint, filler etc as well as some parts from vw in the form of a wheelarch liner, front grille, retainer and an R32 bumper centre vent in order to carry out my front grille mod hoping to make a start later this afternoon :afro:
heres what its all about http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2430048 courtesy of barry_gti  bit of work involved but it does look quite awesome
so this should keep me busy over the next week
-
I did read the Vortex forum and agree that this grill looks smart
I must say i do love the parts dept at VW when you ring up/go in and order random parts like this - they're always a bit like wtf!?!
-
But you don't have an .:R front bumper
-
I'm not to keen on this grill if I'm honest.
Good luck to you though!
-
I think it looked great in that thread, but looks like a b!tch to get right and looking decent. Good luck squire!
Oh, and remember to post some pics on progress etc..... some mods seem to like having 12 page threads without any pics what so ever
-
Dont worry Matt WILL post lots of pictures
-
Good luck mate! dont fcuk it up
-
Looks good, Alot of effort though, good luck
-
good luck fella
-
But you don't have an .:R front bumper
dont think it will go with the standard bumper, but looks wicked with the r32 bumper. good luck tho mate :)
-
Yep steve matt is a pic whore tbh lmao
-
Good luck mate! I hope it comes out well, I'll be keeping my eyes on it! On another note, if it works well I might pay you to do me one!

-
just to say thanks everyone for all your comments :afro: much appreciated indeed
agree with you it is akward and alot of work but i'm prepared for doing it i'm determined to pull this mod off as i want to have something a little different
oh and looks like i'l be selling the black one i have at the moment
-
Okay well started on some of the work earlier and so far the retaining piece has had the original lugs removed and tidied up,centre vw piece has had the grille slats removed and made up some plastic infills from the wheelarch liner bonded those in and applied 2 lots of filler which has not long been rubbed down with 400 grade wet/dry (used dry) and had a go over with (wet) 600 grade and fixed/clipped to the retainer also got the R32 bunper grille cut around the edges ready for sizing up for fitting to the retainer so some steady progress and i'm pleased with how its going so hopefully will be working on it on and off over the weekend :afro: so in the meantime here's some of the progress

alot more to do but so far so good
-
Looking good so far
-
Very different, good luck :afro:
-
well this morning i got the R32 mesh cut to shape for either side of the vw badge and tonight set about cutting and making up two infills for each end of the grille so as to give it a finished look where the mesh ends well spent an hour making and ensuring they fitted okay but once trying to bond them onto the back retainer they wouldnt bond successfuly even tho i was using some decent epoxy resin so it must be down to the composites of the two plastics  so in the end ditched that idea and just going to leave them cut to shape not what i wanted but has to be just a little frustrating having spent the time making up the pieces oh well  so tonight managed to get the mesh 'fillered' and made a start on smoothing it down level which is going to be slow progress and i'l be taking a trip out to get some more wet and dry i think  so for the time being most of the work will be spent sanding and touching in any filler to level it up
so for now heres some pics of the progress
(http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr22/mjwvag20vt/IMG00123-20100327-0853.jpg)

-
I cant wait to see this finished mate
-
After the formula one this morning set about the task of sanding down the filler to level it up and to see any imperfections etc that need some filler adding well looking at the grillle i thought how the fcuk am i going to get that flat  well stuck with it and got it half decent before going out and getting a decent sanding block and some more wet & dry and how much better did it go with the block well had it level in no time :afro: so washed all the dust off and let it dry ready for filling all the areas that have imperfections and the get these sanded down before smoothing it off very wet with some finer grade wet & dry to hopefully get the coats of primer on in the middle of the week
so progress from today....

-
Finally this morning i have applied the final amount of filler to level up and fill any imperfections ready for a final sanding and then smoothing up in readiness for the plastic primer all depends on the weather  as to if i can get it sanded etc tommorrow just have to see
so today heres the progress.

Looks like your nearly on the home straight dude!
Reading through that thread the other day, it looked a bit of a nightmare - how easy have you found it?
-
cant wait 2 see then end product
-
Looks good so far, but why are you filling all the gaps along the top up? Surely that bit will be hidden by the bonnet anyway?
-

thanks
really because i wanted it to flow with the shape of the original retainer i realised the tops mostly hidden but well me being me  alittle bit more work invoved but well worth it
-
right well this morning looked as tho the weather was going to hold out for me to be able to get the filler applied yesterday all sanded down and shaped/levelled up etc all thats finished and then i have smoothed down with very wet 600 grade wet & dry to prepare for the primer all the dust has been washed out and just letting it dry until the morning and hopefully tack the part off to get rid of any dust and hoping to get it primed
so finally after a good couple of hours this morning its now ready for primer/paint

Looking good, think it would look better with the vw badge in silver though, would help show the grill off.
-

Very nice mate  I agree about reverting the badge back to silver

you did say comments were welcome, so, i agree it looks very nice, but only when the bonnet is closed. i think it needs a little more attention to detail on the honeycome at the top where all the filler is, unless its just my eyes?..
-
I'm not sure about that :lipsrsealed:
Can't fault the work you've put into it,but it's not something i would fit on my car.

cheers for your comments yep have put some work into it but i guess i just wanted mainly to have something a little different and maybe not so mainstream that normally gets done not to many mk4's with this  also i'm pretty certain i'm the only mk4 owner around this area with this mod (correct me from the n/e if im'm wrong ) tbh patch yes i'm pretty happy with how it looks works etc and as you say thats what counts  appreciate your comments

i did  and good or bad  i realise this may not be to everyones liking as such thanks for sayin it does look nice i would have liked to put more time in above the honeycomb'd bit as you say but in reality once the bonnet is shut not so much of this is seen had to fill the area as best possible and blend it all in not bad for a first attempt tho
-
love it, would look so  with an R:. bumper ;)
thanks
