Title: Gear shift weight linkge bar?
Post by: Deefadog on 13 November 2004, 15:41
Do these actually work, reducing/eliminating the 2nd gear crunch?

dont think they eliminate the crunch......think that'd be your synchomesh going, poss your gearbox on its way out? has it done over 100K or been badly screwed?

think they just improve the feel of the gearstick, giving it a more chunky positive feel, but there you go i could be wrong on both! ::)

no they don't eliminate the crunch but as matey above said they do make the shift 'feel' better. cheap for genuine vag too!

Thanks1 how much are they? and where from - VAG?

yeah genuine vag from any vw garage i think mine cost about ?8 with the vat. they are a standard mk3 gti part but are the same dimensions as the mk 2 so are a perfect fit. only thing you may have to change is if you have a short shift kit you have to bend one of the ends but its no big problem, i've been using mine for about 2 or 3 years now. these seem to come up on ebay every now and then and people pay way over the odds for them, for once vw come up trumps!

no worries mate, if you get them to bring it up on etka you can clearly see the bit your after. if i was feeling extra nice i'd try and get a part number, but its cold and dark so it aint gonna happen!!!

also, i find putting the clutch fully in when the car is cold will prevent the crunch in 2nd

most of the time i can get away with using about 1/2 the pedal distance to slip up n down the gears. and thats been the way on both my 16v's

I find that my gears don't crunch as much after I fitted one, also made selecting first much easier!

I have one of these spare if anyones interested, found a MK3 in me local scrappy :)

Thanks Gambit!

I'll try it and I'll change the gear box oil and see if there is a difference!

Once i sort the flat spot and oil leak i may start to enjoy it :)

Sounds like a good idea, how do I fit it?

easy, open the bonnet and look in your engine bay.  Theres a long metal rod bent at each end helds on with 2 split pins.  Not the shorter ones with plastic ends, its a metal rod.

Take that off, replace with MK3 weighted rod, which is the same item but with a big chunk of metal in the middle!  Can do the same thing by strapping a chunk of lead to your existing rod, wont look as nice though ;)

Is there anywhere on the net where you can type in a VAG part number and get a description (I'm trying to confirm this part before buying).

Thats the weighted shift rod :) (its 1H0 711 183 btw ;))

ETKA is the software you see the VW parts monkeys using, has diagrams etc.  Can be found on emule :)
