Had the heatshield taken off the CAT last night.
Still got the rattle/resonance! >:( >:( >:(
Where are there any other heatshields that maybe causing this?
I know there is one behind the inlet manifold. Is that the only one?
Could it be a slightly lose exhaust fitting?
Dont think its blowing, sure its not!
So any suggetions please!
-
the rattle on mine was that thin shiny stuff that was above the pipe and seemed to run quite a distance downt he car..
not sure what bit that is?
i hit it with a hammer to keep it back in place and its seemed to stop it mostly..
is that the same as the CAT one you mentioned?
-
No the CAT one is underneath the CAT itself. Thats the one i had taken off!
So there's one between the manifold and the body then. Must be a bugga to get at!
-
I had a Cordoba with the same mk3 16v engine for a while and the heat shield on that used to buzz a treat. That was the manifold one. Mechanic welded it in place a couple of times but said it was a nightmare and if you really were fed up with it, you may as well just get rid of it!
-
* wonders if we're talking about the same thing *
the bit i'm talking about runs right up the middle of the car above the exhaust.. i think its that shiny aluminium (cant be welded?) stuff you see around pipes in industrial places.. ?
-
um, probably not then, i'll get my coat and be off now :-[ ;D
-
dont know if this will help,...on my mk3 there was a rattle/ buzzing caused by a missing rubber grommet on the heat shield above the back box........... it cost pennies to fix.......
-
My exhaust keeps rattling due the misses noit slowing down enough over speed bumps lol
-
Even thin ally can be welded by a good welder with the right kit!
Yes jv i know which one ya mean. Have tried to bend that one and tighten up the nuts.
The problem is i cant recreate it at a standstill. It only happens when driving i.e. under load.
So its bloody impossible to find where its vibrating!
Thanks Overseer i'll get it up on a ramp somewhere and have a good look!
-
i dunno if mine still does it, or that i got used to it..
rear passengers claim they can hear something..
i'm waiting for it to drop off so i can get SS run up throughout :)
-
See i'm convinced its some ancillary metal piece.
Yea i have been thinking of putting in a new SS system. Just wanted to sort this out first!
Here's another thought - if you buy a SS system does it come with a new CAT or do you use your existing one?
-
I think you either get a 2 piece kit, i.e. mid and back pipe, with joins after the cat, or if you do get a 3 piece kit then i would imagine you would not get a new cat, as this would probably double the price of the system.
Hope this helps

Yea thats what i was thinking. Coz a SS sytem is 250-300 quid and a CAT is nearly that on its own.
But then Mild Steel and Stainless dont mix! On their own they start a chemical reaction and corrode. In an exposed wet/salty area under a car it must be accelerated. Hmmmm have to do some investigation.
-
well the cat fits inbetween the front pipe and the mid pipe, so everything should be ok!
As the cat is not made from metal! Or at least i think not
-
The outer casing is! The ceramics and other stuff is inside.
-
i think most are "cat back".. thats what i meant :)
-
Right just been to mates garage, put it on a ramp straight away!
I sat in the car to set the revs to where it sounds, 2250rpm and two of em go underneath with large implements! Touching, banging. levering etc.
Outcome is its the from pipe/downpipe!
Now this is what was said:-
Its a pig of a job, prone to snap and then its a manifold off job, so best leave alone til it starts blowing.
Now i know this guy and when u hear pig of a job ya know it means he dont wanna do it!
So i live with it for now!

Only one solution I have come to terms with...
Leant to love your rattle:)
My Mk3 8v ADY sounds like the valves are about to fly through the bonnet at 2800RPM. It's the heatshield just behind/below the manifold in my case. The VW garage (unnamed so as not to incriminate) recommended a whole new exhaust system...!! (phuq that!)
So I'm climbing in tomorrow and apply some gentle pressure with a 16lb lump hammer...... again.....
