Title: Dash Problems in a GTi 16v on a G plate 89?
Post by: mboon on 22 March 2010, 18:21
Hi all,

Bought a GTi on a G plate this weekend, couldnt bring it home as it was waiting for its MOT and the dials/dash to be replaced as the speedo and MPH are not working.

Heater and Petrol gauges seem to be fine.

Any how, the chap I am buying it from bought a dash cluster (the whole dial section) from ebay from a second hand golf and went to fit this today, but it wouldnt work, he had the wrong one?

I need to know where to find one too? and how do I get it changed to the correct miles on the clock?
Are there any cheap fix's?
What kind of money should I be paying for one?
And someone said the Corrado digital dash would fit and they could program the exact miles the car had?

Help needed please

Thank you

Mark

need to get one with the right plugs on, this depends on the wiring spec of the car. if it has the hazard switch on the dash its pre-90 CE1 wiring, and dash has 2 plugs. if hazard is on the column its a post-90 CE2 wiring setup and the clocks have a single plug.  as long as it has the right plug on any spec petrol MK2 dash will work in the short term, carby, 1.3 etc.

if its a CE2 spec then a vorrado dash could be used, but if its an electronic speedo one you would need a sensor from a mk3 with an 020 box then add the wiring to make it work. a cable dash would fit right in, but i think you would need the loom from dash to fusebopx?

Thank you for that, I think its a hazzard switch on the steering rack thingy, but will double check when we get it home. Are these easy enough to find?

and any idea how I get on with getting the clocks changed to the miles the car has?

thanks

If its a normal unit, see how to strip it down on here;

You can swap the speedo over from one cluster to another, assuming that your orginal one does actually still work.

yeah plenty of them available on ebay or the classifieds, just make sure the ones you get have 1 plug on :)

Can you get ones with white dials? or can you modify the original ones and make them white?

Hi all, got the car back and it has the hazard switch on the steering colum?

Anyone got one going that works?

The only thing that works is the temp gauge and the MF thingy display?

Also, none of the internal dash lights are working, so at night it looks like you have the lights off inside but the lights are on? is this all connected? or is it a inverter or something that has packed in?

This will be the third dash this car has had according to the history!!
I guess they are not very reliable lol

do the number plate lights work? if not then check the fuse as per the fusebox faq :)

yeah they all work, had a bit of a school boy, the lights in the dash work, but due to the crap white dials and poor bulbs I had a job to see it working.

the main dash is still not working, need to get one really as its annoying not knowing how fast your going or revs.
